Or do you just dig right in, forgetting to thank the Lord Almighty for that food you are about to eat...

Sure i do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etiquette_in_Japan#Eating_and_drinking

Meals in Japan traditionally begin with the phrase itadakimasu (いただきます) (literally, "I humbly receive"). The phrase is similar to "bon appétit", or saying grace to give thanks before a meal. It is said to express gratitude for all who played a role in preparing, cultivating, ranching or hunting the food. This also acknowledges that living organisms have given their life to human beings as Dāna.[2][3] Upon finishing a meal, the Japanese also use the polite phrase Gochisosama-deshita (ごちそうさまでした Gochisōsama-deshita) (lit. Thank you for a good meal) or - more informal/simple - Gochisōsama. Gochisōsama is based on the religious belief where chisō (馳走;ちそう) means running with efforts (by riding a horse, thereby indicating expedience) to cater foods for the guest. It is then linguistically altered to express gratitude to the effort by adding go and sama as the form of teineigo (丁寧語).[4][5][6][7] To join one's hands in the namasté gesture while saying these words is good manners. (See also Mottainai as buddhist philosophy.)

At least you have manners, some people look at those who bow their heads and give a silent prayer of thanks as if they have 3 heads.

See, that is why you don't make it further easily with all your skills.

Lack of respect. For yourself, for your food, for the people that worked hard to make the food available to you.

This idea can be put into nearly every every day content.

You should be thankful for the fact that most of the good things in your life are the product of blind luck. That is all most things are. You could have been born in a third world country and never had the opportunities you had; could have never met your wife and still be stuck in Germany, etc. All luck.

i think you can believe in a higher power but if you do all these rituals because its written in a book youre a retard.
only a moron thinks that "god" overhears prayers and such.
its btw good to sometimes realize how good you have it, you tend to focus on the negative things most of time.

Blind luck would be somehow related to blind faith, correct ;)

You most likely paid for your food with your own hard earned money. In most cases you're never given anything, you have to earn it unless you're a leaching slob. What is there to say thanks for? Maybe a good "go to hell" would be more fitting, considering how hypocritical your "god" is.

Even if you are given food it is certainly not god giving it to you, it's the hard work of other considerate people.

Maybe blessing the food, a a precaution for it not being poisoned? I know during Thanksgiving we always have a big prayer for the food that was prepared for us...my folks used to have evening prayer as well.

Why not thank the poeple that MADE the food if you're gonna thank someone?  ::)

Thanking god would be pointless (for me) but maby I should call up the butchers? and the the farm where the meat came from? and thank them?
Oh snap thats right, when I PAY for my food, some of that money goes to them! So thats the "thank you". =)

do you thank god everytime you use tapwater?

What happens if you grow the food yourself as well as raising your own livestock?  Do I thank myself then?  ???

I just always thank whoever prepared the said meal. However, if I prepare my own food, then I'm not gonna thank meself...that'd be weird! WTF!         I should let be known that me is agnostic. I, logically/rationally, won't be pressured by society to "choose" sides when there is unconclusive evidence on both sides. me aint no godamm sucker who falls victim to cultural bullying!
