Does it annoy you when...
« on: October 21, 2010, 12:12:03 PM »
Immigrants from other countries embrace their heritage as if it's where they are from?

For example i'm watching the Lesnar vs Cain pre fight stuff and all Cain talks about is being Mexican.  Yet he's born in America.  America gave him his opportunity and his life, not Mexico.  I'm not saying he shouldn't be proud of his heritage because he should be, we all should be, but it seems a little disrespectful to the country you are from to do that.  Like marrying a girl and flirting with the cocktail waitress in front of her.

I also see this with Italian immigrants.  Kids born here but tattooed up with Italian pride or the flag or some other sh*t.

Yes its annoying as hell.  And the dagos who do it are a joke and an embarassment to their relatives who risked everything to be in this nation.

Annoys me also.  Nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, but don't show a lack of respect for where you are.

Italians in New England are by far the worst when it comes to this. They can't go 30 seconds without talking about how they're Italian. No one else around here even comes close.

Cock Chestnar's going to lose, regardless.

I live in the Bronx and spend ton of time in Lower Westchester BF.    I am in the Mecca of guidodom.  It drives me crazy to see these young dagos with Italy tats on them.

Truly a disgrace, no different than mexicans or albanians who do the same shit.

I actually tried to do MMA about 7 years ago.I trained for about 1.5 years and had two "fights"[guys who trained in the same gym]I won a decsion in the first and lost one in thesecond and I thought I got my ass whipped in both.I had ok hand speed and if I mounted you I was good.My problem was if I got taken down I was dead.I couldnt fight on my back, didnt have enough wrestling or jujitsu skills and sort of got clostraphobic when someone was on top of me for a long time.

Standing up,my lats were too big[along with imaginary lat syndrome]so I was an open target too often as I couldnt get my arms close enough to really have much of a defense.Getting punched in the nose 30 times in a row tends to sort of dampen your enthusiasm for the sport.

If I started when I was 23 instead of 39 I might have been able to try it longer and do better at it,but it was too hard for me.I was too old,too slow, too heavy and really not tough enough to take the beatings.

Immigrants from other countries embrace their heritage as if it's where they are from?

Are you sure that's what you meant to type? ...'cause if they're immigrants from other countries,
...that is exactly where they're from! DAH!  ;D

That could simply be a backlash from living in a "mono"culture (for want of a better word)
...or in this case, more likely a publicity seeking schtick.

In Canada, I don't notice such profound examples. It could simply be because ours is a multicultural society where all cultures are valued & respected. Hence the compulsion for jingoism isn't as pronounced, ...or maybe there is just so much of it, ...I fail to see it all around me.

I have noticed these tendencies most often in those who feel their culture is undervalued or under threat.

Now THAT's tacky! Why do guys do that? As if you'd have any interest in them?

I think when a people with a strong culture, a strong cultural identity, and a history full of great achievements with much to be proud of, find themselves in a new culture where their heritage is not given the respect they feel it's due... the jingoism is bound to come out in leaps and spades.

Unfortunately, this pride in heritage, can sometimes be misinterpreted as a slam on other cultures when it's not.

Also too, a culture and a country are two different things. You can love your country, but not it's culture.
By the same token, you can love your culture, but not your country, or what your country has become.
Don't take it personally.
