Five random sports related opinions or statements
« on: October 21, 2010, 03:08:30 PM »
Baseball now sucks; the NFL has officially dethroned MLB as America's favorite sport. Don't believe me? Look at the TV numbers; they show regular season NFL games outperforming playoff baseball games (and that's with two teams from major media markets duking it out).

John Gruden talks about every NFL player as if he is the greatest thing since sliced fucking bread. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT WES WELKKKERR! I TELL YOU THIS GUY IS TOUGH. HE'S ON THE GO ROUTE AND BAM, HE MAKES THE CATCH IN STRIDE!!!!!!! WES WELKER COULD BE THE BEST SLOT GUY IN THE NFL. (2 plays later) LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT...

Bret Farve is a degenerate piece of shit, just like the rest of us. How the media induced gag fest of man love still continues is beyond me.

Those who think rugby is a more violent sport than football are sorely mistaken. NFL players use their helmets as weapons... they are bigger stronger and faster than ANY rugby player out there. Fact is, no Rugby player is dumb enough to smash into another player head to head at full speed. Less pads actually ='s more awareness regarding injury.

I  just watched the peep video of that blonde broad from ESPN. I think I'm in love.

Gruden is fun to listen to though. And he knows football. He and Jaws play off each other pretty well. I used to get a kick out of the Chuckie dolls at opposing stadiums.

couldnt agree more about gruden, but moreso MNF in general. The pleasantries and cliche commentray leading up to kickoff makes me sick to my stomach. i guess im an nfl elitist  ::)

the nba is so bland and stale to me right now. The nba sucks. Maybe becaue ive grown to not enjoy basketball more and more as i get older, idk.

the nfl is getting stale to me too. The same pro sets over..and over..and over. I like what the dolphins did though, surely enough, other teams followed. There has to be other ways to compete on offense.

sick of people bitching about the lack of a salary cap in the mlb.

soccer is growing on me.

Good point regarding soccer. I spent a month in Europe last year and I got the chance to see a match. Amazing.

The crowd excitement during those games is such an adrenaline rush. That pumps you up more than the actual game does. Soccer is such a simple, practical sport, yet so insanely popular all over the world(except for the majority of North America).

I have a fresh-off-the-boat wet irish buddy of mine visiting from England. I met him while visiting England 10 years ago. Took him to his first NFL game when the Ravens played the Browns at home. He had a different opinion about american football after that. Now he's become a huge fan since the NFL brought football to Wembley.

It's popularity has to do with two things, imo.

1.) It can be played anywhere, anytime, for free. All you need is a ball or something that resembles a ball.

2.) It allows less fortunate contries to (and fans in general) to display their national pride.

Both sports are polar opposites. soccer is all about the build up to a score...it's very technical, while football is played in short and exciting bursts, where the excitement does not come from the buildup to a climax, moreso the rapid and explosive scoring or big plays that are being made.

I can't fall in love with soccer, frankly I don't have the room with NFL, college football, college basketball, etc...  but also because I didn't grow up playing it, so never developed much respect for it.  0-0 ties just aren't my bag.

Rebellious by nature, I HATED when teachers, coaches, media tried to tell me how great it was, when asked why....it was usually "It's the most popular sport in the world!  It's your problem if you don' get it."  Sorry, not buying it.  Mass appeal doesn't do it for me.  by that analogy, Lady Gaga is "better" than 1,000's of other bands/singers out there because she's more "popular."

NBA sucks.....has for years.  Not commitement to win titles other than the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs and Pistons.  Too much one on one playground garbage for me.

Disappointed in Favre.  Not because he has a wild past, etc... but damn man, with everything his wife went thru/was going thru and you are doing that garbage?  Zero respect.

Golf is a humbling sport.  Don't believe me, try it sometime....especially under tourney conditions.....there might be 3 guys on getbig, which has it's share of former athletes, who can break 90 in those conditions.  Most of us would look far more respectable in almost any other sport.

Lebron was right, Cleveland needs to "get over it".  Yeh, it sucks he left, but it's a basketball team. If your entire economy in downtown is dependent on him, you have bigger problems.

The NBA regular season is useless. No one the players, fans or league cares until April. Cut the season, reduce the outlandish salaries and the league will be better for it. These mega teams will be terrible for the game

The NHL is a terribly run organization. It is an amazing game and should be sooo much bigger than it is..Of the 4 big sports, I'd rather watch a great hockey game than a great football, bball or baseball game.

The 'small market' excuse is bullshit

I hate the NCAA. Everyone profits except the kids. They are the overprotecting parent, but they are out to protect themselves under the guise of caring about the athletes

Regarding earlier comments...

1.  Football really overtook baseball sometime in the 1970s.  It was, in part, because football is more tv-friendly, but many argue that baseball's owners and players' union has destroyed the game.
2.  I don't know if John Gruden does this, but so many announcers, in describing a player, will say something like, "If you look up (insert positive adjective) in the dictionary, you'll see (player name)'s picture."
3.  Obviously, I don't approve of a married man doing what Brett Favre is being investigated for, but the woman involved is hardly the Virgin Mary.  I saw where she will not speak with the NFL if she and Favre can come to a financial settlement.  Money/attention whoring to the extreme.  Although, if it means no more of those obnoxious Wrangler "Bad To The Bone" (oh brother  ::)  )commercials, it's not all bad.
4.   I have gotten to the point I prefer soccer and rugby.  The NFL is great, except that, like a rodeo, action happens about 8 seconds at a time.
5.  The NBA flat out sucks.  Last minute of the game takes longer than the first 47.  Crooked offficials, fixed games, and as The Showstoppa said, too much playground bullshit.
