Actually there are plenty of 'reputable' scientists who theorize about time travel.  Einstein and Hawkings are just two. The concept isn't "plainly impossible" kust because we're just starting to work on it.  Splitting the atom was once "plainly impossible", breaking the sound barrier was once "plainly impossible", flight was once "plainly impossible", landing on mars was once "plainly impossible", the earth traveling around the sun was once "plainly impossible"...

Time is a human concept in any event, who is to say that it is strictly lineal and why would it be beyond reason to travel any which way.
