« on: October 22, 2010, 04:24:41 PM »
American Media Inc. is relocating Muscle & Fitness magazine from California to New York. In associated with the move, AMI has named Seth Kelly editor-in-chief of the magazine as well as editorial director of Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers. Previously, Kelly served as editor of UFC, a magazine AMI launched last year in partnership with Ultimate Fighting Championship. Allan Donnelley will continue to serve as editor-in-chief of Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers.

NEW YORK, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- American Media, Inc. (AMI) Chairman, President and CEO, David J. Pecker, announced today that Seth Kelly has been named editorial director for Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers. Kelly will also assume the role of editor in chief of Muscle & Fitness, which will relocate its operations to New York from California. These AMI titles cover the full spectrum of fitness, from exercise to nutrition, and reach an audience of over 8 million men and woman, ranging from those just looking to get back into shape to competitive bodybuilders.

"Seth has been a valuable member of AMI's team since he launched the premiere issue of UFC, the official magazine of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and has served as the magazine's editor in chief," said Mr. Pecker. "We are now excited to have him take the leading role at our enthusiast titles. From his days as an editor at Maxim to editing UFC, Seth has proved he adds a fresh and exciting editorial perspective to any publication he becomes involved with."

Mr. Kelly said, "This is a fantastic opportunity to work on an established portfolio of brands. Muscle & Fitness on its own is a very strong title with a 70 year history. We are going to amp up the workouts, our coverage of nutrition and supplementation, and get our guys stoked about hitting the gym."

Additionally, Allan Donnelley will continue to serve as editor in chief of Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers.

The transition will be completed by the beginning of 2011 including expansion of the staff.

Weider offices are not being closed - they still will run 4 magazines out of Woodland Hills. Only M&F is going to move by the end of the year.

Pecker plan

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that American Media CEO David Pecker was getting ready to pull out of the offices in Woodland Hills, Calif., that he has been renting from vitamin king Joe Weider ever since he purchased Weider Publications in 2002 for $350 million.

Over the past two years, budgets and staff have been cut after Weider's biggest advertiser, Hydroxycut, under pressure from the FDA, issued a voluntary recall of its product in 2009 and halted advertising for a year. Some 500 ad pages disappeared from Muscle & Fitness. Staffers complained that no raises have been handed out for at least the past two years.

Earlier this month, vice president of human resources Ken Slivken flew in and began interviewing everyone working on Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Fit Pregnancy and Natural Health.

"The claim was 'auditing' but the rumors abound that he plans to move the magazines from their Woodland Hills offices to New York so he can keep a closer eye on them," said one insider.

Yesterday, at least some of the prediction came true when Muscle & Fitness workers were informed that the title's 12-member editorial staff will be moving to New York in January and getting a new editorial director.

Seth Kelly, a one-time top editor at Maxim, who had recently been running the Ultimate Fighting quarterly that American Media produces in New York, will be the new editorial director of Muscle & Fitness.

Kelly is also being named the editorial director of Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers, although Allan Donelly will continue to serve as editor of Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers. If any of the staffers of Muscle & Fitness make the move East, they may not want to unpack their boxes. They will be mov ing into One Park Ave. in January, but AMI has already signed a long-term lease to move far downtown to 4 New York Plaza in May.

AMI, which has about 70,000 square feet at its current Manhattan address will be taking over two floors with about 80,000 square feet when it moves into the 20-story office tower. The expectation is that the remaining Woodlands Hills staffers will be filling that space next spring.

And the rest will move in March/April which is when AMI move into larger offices.
