Eddie used to let me train at World for free. I had to split before Joe came in because "Joe knows everyone that's a member here and will ask me who you are". So since I didn't know Joe, I can't give my opinion as to whether he was gay or not. Not that I give a shit.

Eddie was very cool, we'd bullshit for hours. A fellow Brooklynite, lol. Used to know Zabo and Ira Bankowski pretty well also. Ira was a funny guy. Used to talk to Art Zeller and Don Ross when they came in as well. All of them are gone now except for Eddie.

Loved some of those old machines Joe made though. The T bar row worked especially well.

joe gold was a class act.....nice guy...never made people from out of town pay for a training session....

if you were just dropping in for the day.

jim morris was very impressive.....especiall y in the traps department....dude has to be in his early 70s by now.

no music there at all.....cool atmosphere though.....nice to be able to train out on the back patio....nothing like working out in the fresh air.....great pics of the legends up on the walls of the gym....sad to see the place close.

Yup, no music. Nice and quiet and nearly empty when I would go and train in the early afternoon. Used to love to train on the patio. I liked the glassed in sun room area as well. Eddie used to give me free tee shirts and magazines from time to time as well. Miss those days...

Joe let me train there for a month. Just asked how long I would be there and said it was fine. I never forgot that and extend that privilege to some visitors at my gym when I am there.

Zabo was cool best from what I read he liked the simple life never got caught up in the American Nightmare of materialism and such.

I met Zabo in 1968 at Gold's Gym. Saw him again on my honeymoon when I visited LA in May 1969. Joe Gold took my wife Roz to the beach while I had a workout.

Zabo always had hot gals in his life. A regular guy. I never hung around long enough to be invited over to watch football so I don't know what team he followed.

Zabo was a realist. He didn't think there was a pot of gold for any muscleheads. No one could have predicted how well Arnold would have done. He was just this big guy who couldn't speak English well. To see him elected twice as governor is astounding. I think Joe opened World Gym to give jobs to his old mates from back east. Eddie and Zabo and a few others who were loyal to Joe. On one visit to World Gym in 1991 I asked for Zabo. The guy at the counter said he was sleeping in the cupboard in the office. Apparently Joe would call to check that he was there so the staff would get Zabo to answer the phone. Ah, the good old days.

Here is a shot I took in Oct 1968 outside Golds Gym. Arnold, Chip Wilson, Zabo and Chuck Fautz.
