The lighting is intense white to blow out any imperfections (think Klieg lighting), She has a lot of makeup on in that photo, a ton actually, there is considerable dodging and burning with that black and white photo (a common technique in the Dark Room to eliminate imperfections and highlight areas.

come on, you cant really compare it to how it is these days, where they routinely make 5's and 6's look like Perfect 10's in all their pictures. there is no comparison whatsoever, its not even close.
