It's true that there is no reason to have any special reverence of universities, lots of dumb people there like everywhere. But on avarage it's still a career accelerator. Plus it's an interesting experience to get a taste of the academic world.

Yeah, plus name recognition goes a long way as well. I used to not want to believe it but employers (in a general sense) will look more favourably upon you if you have a degree form a 'prestige uni'.
