26 years old no direction
« on: November 08, 2010, 07:28:38 PM »
I'm 26 years old I graduated from a small University in 2007. I have a degree in health, physical education, and recreation. I have worked several different jobs since graduating college. I worked as a personal trainer for a little while. I enjoyed being in the gym all of the time and being around the culture. The job wasn't paying all of the bills. I couldn't see myself making a good living just being a free lance personal trainer.

Next job I worked at a large factory in Western N.Y. I worked in the quality control department. I was making decent money but still not enough to really make a great living and I didn't see myself moving up in the company. I recently moved to South Carolina. I took a job working on the lift team with the therapy department. It doesn't pay very well but they will help pay for schooling if you are interested in going back for something.

I was thinking about going back for nursing but getting into the schools down there is really difficult. I admit I didn't have the best grades in college. Nursing is becoming one of the most competitive careers down here in Charelston. I applied to one of the better schools. With my grades I think it will be very hard for me to get in. The problem is don't really know what to do with the degree that I have. I got to make some moves soon I don't want to get to far behind. I was thinking about maybe becoming a police officer but I have used drugs in my past. I cycle anabolics on and off through the year and I know they give lie detector tests. I have always been really interested in guns and tactics and all of that stuff. If I could go back after highschool I would of joined the marines or the army.

I just feel kind of lost I need to find something and really focus all of my time into getting it done. The classes I took in college were very very hard for me. I have always had a hard time learning certain subjects math and science. I really pushed through it though and got it done. I know I have it in me I have to find something to focus on. Any suggestions?

Based on what you say above, more schooling may not be the way to go.  Similarly, you do not appear passionate about nursing and health care so it's not clear to me that you would be happy or successful on a nursing track.  For you it would just be "a job."

I think you need to spend some time thinking about what it is you really want from your career.  Are you motivated by money?  Independence and autonomy?  Flexibility/portability?  Prestige/power?  Stability/Security?  Long term benefits?  Obviously, in a perfect world your job would offer all of these things, but you live in the real world so you should be prepared for trade offs.  Identify your priorities and then your path will become more clear.

Btw, I am all for more education, but remember that more schooling requires time and money and there is no guarantee that you will successfully finish the degree program.  You could begin a course of study, take on student loans and drop out with nothing to show for the effort except debt. :-[

Good luck.

Go to an area with bored wives whose husbands make big dollars and charge 150 an hour for in home training.

This post made me realise how easy is everything over there in the States......finding a job, moving homes, getting multiple degrees and education is so fucking easy. You should not complain...

I don't know if you like being around kids, but have you considered education (teaching)?
It seems you enjoyed the exercise "culture." This would give you a chance to get back into it somewhat.
Don't laugh at the prospect of being a gym teacher, either.
Most settle into a financially stable/rewarding career after paying some dues - you're only 26.

Many "gym teachers" also eventually wear multiple hats in the school's HPE departments.
Some teach health classes, coach sports teams, go on to become athletic directors, etc.

Depending on your role(s), you'll probably have a good bit of free time.
You could do some personal training on the side for a little extra ching, but now that money is a "bonus."

I used to train with two guys who did just that!
One was a school's gym teacher and pee-wee wrestling coach, trained some clients evenings & weekends plus more in the summer, and he had time to compete in bb.
I don't think the man's had a stressful day in 18 years.
He had several sources of income and loved what he did in every one!

do what you love to do.  Even if it's something that doesn't seem to be profitable, because if you're GOOD, you'll find ways to make money with it.

makaveli25 have you landed on your feet yet?

If not, consider working at a university.  Whenever my friends are looking for work, I always point them to the university.  People tend to think that only professors work at universities, but the truth is we hire in almost every job category you can think of from physicians, to police, to secretaries, IT workers, custodians, lawyers, and on and on.  In your case, you might want to become affiliated with one of the big athletics programs at a nearby school.  From athletic coordinators, to trainers, to assistant coaches those jobs are a nice landing spot for people interested in athletics.  And because you are working at a large organization you will likely enjoy stability and long term benefits you could not find elsewhere; universities do not often go out of business.

Look how long Joe Paterna, Jerry Sandusky, and Mike McQueary have been at Penn State!  Of course not every school has the winning streak and resources of a Penn State, but sports are a big industry in the US and colleges are part of that pipeline.

Would one of these job titles appeal to you?

Assistant Football Coach - Offensive Coordinator
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator
Athletic Training Program Director
Director of Athletics

Demonstrate a vast and comprehensive knowledge of political and economic issues on the Politics boards, using your impressive array of posts to get noticed by the Agency or some other intelligence group. They'll offer a job once they see you've got all the analytical chops they could ask for. I think this is really what 3333 is up to, despite others thinking he is just a graduate of a third tier toilet law school with mental issues that spends all day on the internet.

I've gotten two jobs thanks to my facebook posts... no kidding.
