2 of the most overrated of all time.

products of the american ufc hype marketing machine.

capable of propelling average, unworthy joes into legendary status.

oh brother ::)  At least they fought all of the top guys in their divisions, unlike Fedor, who's been ducking anyone who could beat him.

I will have to disagree with you here. Chuck Liddel is definitely overrated and was exposed by a real fighter(Rampage) and beating Tito Ortiz does not count to make you truly good.

But Couture is a legend, and one of my favorite fighters ever. He is the real deal. All-American wrestling champ...most condecorated UFC fighter ever - only to win both the light-heavyweight and heavyweight belts - and the most consistent in terms of fighting truly really worthy competition. Couture is a true legend.

To me, the dream matchup would be the 2004 Fedor vs the 1998-2002 Couture. A fight between these two nowadays would be a joke because Fedor is past his prime and Couture is senile, but a fight between the two years in the past would be the greatest MMA fight ever.

Are you trying to imply that Randy was past his prime?  Nice try.  After those loses to Chuck, he went on to win and defend the UFC Heavyweight belt.  Dude, you've just exposed yourself as a total ignoramus when it comes to MMA...lol.

You talk as if the competiition when he won the UFC heavyweight belt were that great. Lol...that was the worst time ever for the UFC heavyweight division. Couture actually moved to the heavyweight division because the competition there was far less formidable than at light-heavyweight. You have just exposed yourself as a total ignoramus when it comes to MMA. Actually, you accomplished that when you said Mir is better than Fedor. Lmao.......

Fedor is clearly not the same Fedor that demolished everyone in PRIDE. As for Couture, the guy is almost a quinquagenarian. What is ignorant about my comment?

Lidell was a one dimensional fighter who took advantage of one dimensional opponents. Once he lost a step and his chin got weaker, he became a human highlight reel for taking brutal knockouts. Randy is a far more complete fighter who actually became better with time. Both are legends, but I wouldn't classify either of them in their primes as in Fedor's league, Anderson Silva's league, GSP's league, BJ in his prime or even Shogun. In fact, I don't think either of them is more impressive than a Dan Henderson to tell you the truth. I would put Randy as a top 10 ( at number 10) all time great fighter. I don't think Lidell is a top 10 all time great. The most compelling fights either of them ever fought were against each other. Purely based on the fact that Lidell beat Randy twice (albeit at 205) he is an all time great. If you took those two wins away, I wouldn't even consider Lidell to be anything special.

I was at that fight. Tito looked like he was looking for a place to fall from the opening bell.

He fought scared that fight.

Vitor should have never taken that fight,  the lone highlight was a flash knockdown.  It was pretty boring considering how good it could have been.

I don't think Chuck was overrated at all,  I just think he didn't fight at his peak long enough to be considered one of the greatest of all times.

WHAT? Randy was 43 yrs. old when he first lost to Chuck. Hardly a young man in his prime.

To be honest, I never cared for Chuck and also thought he was a slogging one dimensional fighter. Before every fight I knew for sure he would lose and be exposed. He always proved me wrong. He beat guys like Belfort, Overeem, Randleman, Sobral, as well as Couture. These guys are not push overs.

Liddel was nothing more than a very hard puncher and a tough guy who could take a lot of punishment, and that's it. He was the best in the UFC in the late 1990s, but that's only because there were so few talented ground fighters back then except for Couture. He would be totally decimated by today's fighters who are so talented at wrestling and grappling. I did love Liddel's fights because he always seeked the knock out aggressively and would keep on coming no matter what, but frankly he was very one dimensional and definitely not as technical either on the stand up or ground game as the guys today.

Again, when I watched Chuck I was never impressed. If I didn't know who he was and saw him out on the streets I would think that I could take him. But I never knew what it was like to go toe to toe with him. He always manage to pull it off. Randleman was a great wrestler and Sobral is a world class BJJ black belt. Even Fedor couldn't put him aways. And even Couture was and is still a great wrestler. Couture more than held his own against Jacare, one of the top three BJJ fighers in the world, in a submission wrestling match held a few years ago. They fought to a draw. And Jacare submitted Marcello Garcia (though admittedly he's a lot bigger) and went back and forth with Roger Gracie (with Roger getting the edge) who considered number one in the world.

Sometimes just being a hard puncher and being tough as nails is enough.

I can see you know a lot of MMA. Few people would know who Jacaré is.

Too bad that if you are taken to the ground, all your punching power and toughness becomes irrelevant. 99% of guys tap to a rear choke and the 1% that don't pass out. And a guy like Liddel was not exactly hard to take to the ground given that his takedown defenses are not stellar.
