DHA / EPA
« on: November 14, 2010, 01:03:39 AM »
If you were to supplement with only one of the two, which one would you choose?

I eat fish on a daily basis since i moved to Japan. I was looking for a Fish Oil supp to increase Omega3 intake a bit, but it seems you can get either DHA or EPA and combos are rare.

Also, which amount of DHA/EPA is recommended?

Princess L posted this link towards the end of last month:
http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2010/10/23/788-mental-health-naturally/

Around the 35:00 mark begins the conversation concerning fish oil.
The main topic of the show was depression, but at least in regards to supporting mental health, the show’s guest recommends:

1,000mg EPA
500mg DHA

Several years ago, PL also posted total doses for different benefits such as cardiac health, brain function, etc.
I had the respective amounts saved on my old computer, but I suspect her highness still has said information somewhere in her possession.

If not, Sev could probably search through 4 years of posts & find it for you.

Why not just get both?  A 2:1 ratio (EPA/DHA) is what the big studies have used.  EPA being good for heart health and overall well being and DHA for brain function.

I wonder why they're separated over there  ???  Wouldn't be more expensive separating the two since they're both inherent in the fishes used?  Then again, some people may want to supplement with higher doses of one over the other.

Supplementing both here will become pretty expensive.

Don't ask me why, but a months supply of EPA will cost me around 30$ here. DHA the same.
I am not going to spend to spend 60$ on fish oil when i can spend it on fish, lol.

Thanks for the answer though, maybe i have to import some from the US, that will still be cheaper.

Is it highly concentrated -hence the cost?  What about the fish that's available there?  Are they high in Omegas?

Maybe you could take an EPA 4 days a week and a DHA 3X a week  ???

I think it is pure EPA/ DHA. Most of the fish oil supplements i have seen have only a small amount of EPA/DHA in them.

The fish that is available here? You name it, they have it. Normally i stick to salmon or tuna though.
