it's as bad as drunk driving - cause at least the drunk has eyes on teh road.  I see it every single day - people missing green lights, drifting, or speeding - cause of the damn iphone in their hand. 

When you're driving a heavy vehicle at 50 mph - you're a speeding bullet with a lot of mass.  To put your eyes down to tweet or hit on some chick is some seriously selfish shit.

And this isn't a libertarian affront either - we're not denying drivers any right.  They're denying many people a right to life.

We are in America, and are supposed to have FREEDOM and CHOICE. Now, IF this is indeed as serious an issue as you claim it is (I don't think it is, based on the studies I've seen in various media and online, and my own personal experience.... but admittedly, MO has a let less traffic and people than CA), and it DOES prove to be a serious enough issue to merit legislation, then let private industry, innovation, entrepreneurship, and intelligent individuals come up with solutions, and put it to a VOTE.  It should NOT be rammed down our throats by an out of control draconian administration that is hellbent on taking away our freedoms.

The bullshit they are proposing is textbook "Big Brother" and likely has far more sinister motives than "protecting drivers". 

I'm just going off my own personal experience and I know I'm not the only one who's had experiences like I have.  Is it as rampant as some claim? I don't know, I haven't seen any hard data as to how many accidents/deaths that can be equivocally attributed to cell phone use.

I do agree with your other point about this being rammed down our throats.  I believe there is a much better way to approach this.  We have a ton of very smart people who, if put to the task, could come up with something better than cell phone jamming in the car.

Whats my point? I haven't seen some public outrage demanding the banning of cell phones in cars. So it would seem that the elected official is doing what he wants. Besides this is a state issue, not a federal issue, have a clue before you post a bunch of stupid shit.

Like I said earlier, I'm really torn on this issue.  I do agree, it's bullshit, but I can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit by some dumb bitch on a cell phone not paying attention.  The drivers in LA are bad enough as it is, add cell phones to the mix  and you have incidents like the one with Brandi a few years back where she rear ended a guy and killed him while texting on her phone.

I have no problem with people using cell phones in the car, responsibly.  This just isn't happening though, so instead of bitching about it, what suggestions do you guys have to fix this problem?  I'm asking in earnest here.

I drive a lot.  I have never seen anyone driving stupid while talking not a cell phone.  I am not saying it doesnt happen, but the idea that a cell phone distracts a driver IMO is dumb because. Talking to or scolding kids, eating food, finding the right radio station, scrolling through your playlist etc. All do the same thing. 

Now texting is a different story.  That should be illegal.
