Why do i BOTHER going home for THANKS GIVING
« on: November 27, 2010, 01:07:29 PM »
The whole trip sucked. Coming down there and revisiting with family after a 2 year hiatus reminded me why it took me so many years to lose my virginity. I listened to my grandmother and mom rant and rave how fat and ugly i had gotten in the last 2 years (205lbs in single digit bf.. probably 9-10%). For some reason i didn't think telling them it was test bloat would help my cause. I then had to eat dinner at my grandmothers while my aunt brings her tumor ridden dog that is on the verge of dying, yet the insist on keeping it alive like Terry Shiavo with steroids and multiple surgeries. It was totally blind and as i watched it stumble around the room and my Mom cutting the tukery i slowly lost my appetite.

My autistic second cousin was running around telling everyone the TV would be working properly in a few minutes and my whole right wing conservative side of the family ranted about the Rapture and how they were all stocking up canned foods for the event. Me and my dad ate in disgust in a private room away from the rest of the family. I hate these family get togethers. Why do we have them :(

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha haha!

You're no different than most people...Sadly I avoid everyone and just stick with my wife...I may call and give my wishes but I'm not going to have my weekend ruined...I love them but they are on a different planet and they get pissed when you don't agree...

I get nervous before these events too. I don't think it is me so much. I just smile and nod. I don't really speak unless spoken to but i occasionally prod around to see where everyone is at in life. I mostly like listening to the elders and their stories but they are usually drowned out by the young and their stupid dribble about the muslim obama and how the world is going to end. One time we hosted the dinner at our house and sure enough my stupid uncle sneaks in a family prayer. Me and my dad gave each other side ways looks and chuckled and let them do their mumba jumba ceremony. I glanced over at my brother to see him bow his head out of respect which i gave him hell for when they left.

Funny, and very familiar to me.  I actually only live about 10 miles away from my parents and sister, and have only talked to my parents once in the last two+ years.  I sent my sis a text to wish her a happy turkey day and that was good enough for me.  Oddly enough, I went to my gf's parent's for thxgiving for the first time after only dating for about three months and it was probably the best holiday I've had in over 10 years.

GREAT post! Thanks for posting this and having the courage to express your feelings on this subject.
I don't go  to any Thanksgiving get-togthers myself . I went to an ECHL hokcey game with my wife on T-day. ;)
My 79 yr old mom , still does the turkey dinner with all the fixin's. She had 21 extended family members in her small place for dinner.
I visit her in the summer and spend a few days hanging out and enjoying some quality time with her when it is less hectic.
The few family members I do keep in touch with are ones that I enjoy seeing.
I just don't don't go out of my way for people who don't see or talk to me on a regular basis.
Just because some person may have some obscure geteic copnnection is not any reason for eitehr of us to feel compelled to spenmd the holidays together.
Solution for those that feel miserbale and hate the t-day experience- DON'T go! ;)
You will geta little bit of grief at first, but those that love you will accept it and just be sure to find a time to see them at some point each yr.

A man I can relate to. Good post!
I live 1300 miles from where I grew up ( NH) and my mom still lives.
We live a good 500 miles from my wife's mom in La and only go down for Christmas for 3-4 days.
I hit the local gyms I used to work out at and run into some of the various muscleheads I used to compete with, etc

Its a proven fact that if a person grows up in a very supportive family and isn't making a half million dollars+ a year by the age of 30, than (in most subjects) they probably are a loser. The poor and middle class is filled with fucked up moms and dads who crush the dreams of their kids early on.
