Hes right though, its illegal for someone to receive classified documents.
The press I believe has particular rights when it comes to documents, when it comes to exposing government corruption.
However I dont know if Wikileaks quite falls under the same definition. He is not an official news outlet, hes just some guy with a website, and therefore I think he falls under the same laws as if you or I were to recieve classifed documents. Its HIGHLY HIGHLY illegal.

The press is under some sort of laws that require them to be careful about what they let the regular public see. Youll see them expose corruption, but they dont really let the public go into detail with the documents like Wikileaks does.

Im not 100% sure that any of what I said is fact tho, thats just what I had understood.

I believe so, yes. And not that it would be ok, but that rather than some random dude opening up sensitive info, an investigation would take place, trial, etc, and only the necessary info would be given to the public.
You have to understand, it IS necessary to keep certain classified things away from the public. I know it goes agaisnt what you think is right, but its the way it is. And with the press, they can take care so that only what is necessary to deal with the corruption reach the public. They have an obligation not only to protect the public, but to protect the classification of sensitive documents.
You cant really believe that the public should have access to ALL documents, do you? Things are classified for a reason.

No I don't believe all the documents should have been made public, things like the location of US troops etc should not be available to Al-qaida by a few clicks on the mouse, that is the only one thing I can think of though.

Think of it like this Xerxes, what if someone gave your parents and your job (espeically a high paying job) when and where you go to drink, what you drink, who you have sex with, whether you used a condom, your size, when you took a shit, what it looked like, what drugs you take, whether or not you pay your bills on time, whose cat you kicked, whose dog you kicked, if you are speeding, etc.

Do you think that needs to be reported? Now imagine if you were "someone of interest" to Wikileaks and that got out...

ive worked for defence companies and held top secret clearance.

my understanding is that it isnt illegal to receive confidential documents, or release them to the public, unless you were bound by an agreement to uphold the confidentiality.- i.e. were granted clearance.

the crime is on those who originally obtained them as part of their job, and passed them on.

The only other way is if they were obtained through hacking or stolen..then of course they werent "received".

so if he received them and then merely posted what he received, i dont see a crime.

People need to use common sense, instead of "oh,  look at what I've found. Or what was sent to me, so let's release it", think of the rammifications of that info if leaked.

If it was leaked out the composite of the material that makes up the Stealth fighter/bombers, who would that really help? If it was leaked out that generals or high government officials meet in a certain location at a certain time, who would that help?

And, who is really doing the leaking, is he being used as a puppet, to eventually reign in control of such people, and used as a example why "certain freedoms" are dangerous, thus ensuring a more compliant populace?

its based on precedent and general principles and often contradicted by others (thats why precedents come into play)

what is one person's common sense, may not be another- based on their belief system and life philosophy.

i think its easier to get a conviction for something else, lets say, rape?..for instance. that law is clear.
