Huckabee Says He Could Win White House
Tuesday, 07 Dec 2010
By Jim Meyers and Kathleen Walter

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tells Newsmax he is seriously considering a run for president in 2012 and believes he could win “all the way to the White House.”

But the 2008 Republican presidential candidate expressed concern that GOP candidates might “eat each other alive” in the primary season and leave the door open to President Obama’s re-election.

And regarding the handing over of sensitive information to WikiLeaks, Huckabee facetiously says if the U.S. government is “that incompetent” to allow the leakage, then the job of monitoring the flow of classified material might be turned over to Apple or Google.

Story continues below.

Huckabee is an ordained Baptist minister, host of a TV talk show on Fox News Channel, and best-selling author. His new book is “Can’t Wait Till Christmas.”

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, was asked whether he plans to run for president again in 2012.

“It’s still an open question,” he says.

“I’m not being coy, it’s just that I haven’t decided, and I’m seriously looking at it. I’d be less than honest if I said, oh no, I never think about it. Of course I do, especially when poll after poll shows me in a position to win all the way to the White House.

“I think the biggest thing I have to work through is, can I get the nomination, can I raise the money, and can I deal with what really is the biggest challenge — that’s getting through what probably will be a very crowded Republican field.

“What I hope doesn’t happen is that the Republicans eat each other alive in the primary, because all that does is whoever emerges, whether it’s me or somebody else, they’re going to be very weakened.

“Obama’s going to start with a billion dollars in his account. He will have virtually no opponent in the Democratic primary. And that’s going to be a big mountain to climb.

“So the Republicans need to run against Obama, not against each other. If that happens I think we’ve got a chance to make Obama a one-term president.”

Huckabee has gone on record as supporting a continuation of the "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy regarding gays in the military. He cited recently disclosed survey results showing that a majority of those in the military today don’t care if gays serve openly.

“But if you look deeper into that poll, what you find out is that an overwhelming number of the combat troops are opposed to it, along with like 58 percent of the Marine combat troops,” he says.

“You also find that 14 percent of the American soldiers say they would not re-up if it was in place, and another 10 percent said they would consider not re-upping when their enlistment time came up.

“If you lose 25 percent of the current force, which is already understaffed, and you have the combat troops that are highly opposed to it, you wonder where are we going to get our fighting men and women. Do you think they’re going to come from Harvard?

“I think the military should not be a social experiment. It’s a fighting force. And we need to do whatever it is that makes it the best fighting force.

“The fact that this is even an issue is to me a little bit confusing. Why would we make this an issue right now?”

Huckabee observed that a member of the American military is suspected of leaking the sensitive material released to the press by WikiLeaks, and said the “bigger issue” is “why did this guy have access to that kind of information?

“Is there not some mechanism in place? You see a soldier who’s somehow using his computer to download hundreds of thousands of documents and there’s no system in place to monitor that he’s done it?

“I mean if our government is that incompetent, then let’s get Apple to run the top-secret documents section, because at least they have a mechanism to track how many things you’re downloading. Heck, Google can follow me better than that.

“Why can’t the United States government know who’s looking at their documents and when they’re downloading them? That’s absurd.”

Regarding moves in Congress to extend the Bush tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year, Huckabee tells Newsmax: “I think it’s really important that they get this done.

“The reason the unemployment rate keeps holding up there near 10 percent is that with uncertainty hanging over business owners, they can’t hire anybody. They don’t know what the cost of doing business is going to be, not just what it’s going to cost per hour to employ someone but what will the regulatory costs be. We know that the cost of Obamacare is going to be staggering. You add all this together and people are afraid to make a move.

“That means businesses that could hire and would hire instead are hunkered down, and they’re afraid of their government. That’s a terrible position for us to be in America.”

Huckabee says his “Can’t Wait Till Christmas” is a “fun book” for children at Christmas time, with no political message. It recounts how as a boy Huckabee and his sister would secretly open their Christmas gifts days ahead of time, then carefully rewrap them to fool their parents — a tale he says offers a lesson in patience and virtue.

“Can’t Wait Till Christmas” is not Huckabee’s first Christmas book. His earlier work “A Simple Christmas: Twelve Stories That Celebrate the True Holiday Spirit” — a New York Times best-seller — encourages readers to put Christ back in Christmas.

Huckabee says it is “dishonest” to maintain that Christmas is strictly a secular holiday “that has nothing to do with faith, because it does.

“The Judeo-Christian bedrock foundation of this country is simply irrefutable.”

You should assume that, in all likelihood, I'll be voting against Obama, again.

I'm assuming you will not be voting, again.

He shouldn't be too confident.  He couldn't beat McCain.

Neither could Romney - and neither could Rudy.

But both would have kicked obama's ass in the 2008 election.  mccain was a result of romney and rudy acting like undignified fools, screaming "you're a lib!" at each other for 8 straight months.

In 2012, the GOP nominees should carry themselves with a bit more dignity, defeat obama, and fix things here.

Absurd.  Did you even follow the election?  Obama had $600 million.  He bought 30 minutes of prime time coverage on the eve of the election.  The economy tanked.  There is no way Romney or Rudy would have stomped Obama.  The fact they couldn't get out of the primary should give you clue that they would have had trouble in the general election.

On second thought, you're the one who said Crist could win the Republican nomination for president.   :)

romney had a leg to stand on when it came to the economy.  mccain admitted he was weak there.

and the mccain ticket led briefly in sept, didn't they?

obama was easily beatable.  everyone threw money at obama once they knew he'd win (when palin did that CBS interview...)

Romney couldn't convince Republicans to vote for him, which is why he couldn't win the primary.  If the man couldn't win the primary, there is no way he would have crushed Obama.  Pretty bad overstatement.

I'm pretty sure McCain had a brief lead.  The economic collapse killed him.

Obama was easily beatable?  Get real.  Bush's approval ratings were horrible.  The financial industry was melting down.

You're pulling the fundraising stuff out of you rear end.  Obama didn't raise $600 million after a Palin interview.  Ridiculous.  He was a fundraising machine long before Palin (who has nothing to do with this subject).

Sounds like a nice home.

Huckabee builds fancy digs
By: CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

(CNN) - As he considers a second run for president, Mike Huckabee is building some fancy new digs in Florida.

According to the Arkansas Times, the 2008 presidential candidate is constructing a $2.2 million home on a lot in Blue Mountain Beach he acquired earlier in the year for $800,000. The beach is located near Destin Florida, on the state's panhandle.

The Arkansas Times, which viewed local tax records - also reports the former Arkansas governor has taken on a $2.8 million mortgage to buy the land and build the home, while paying $250,000 out of pocket. That mortgage is in addition to a near-$400,000 encumbrance on Huckabee's vacation home in North Little Rock, Arkansas, according to the Times.

The new home will consist of 8,224 square feet of living space and nearly 3,000 square feet of deck and porch areas.

Huckabee, who told CNN earlier this week he is considering a second run for president, would of course be excellently situated geographically with a home in the Sunshine State. Florida will hold a key primary in early 2012 and of course usually plays a vital role in the general election.

Huck won't win because the nation doesn't vote to put religious nuts into Office.

You mean like this religious nut?

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ADDRESS TO THE NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST - FEBRUARY 5, 2009

"I didn't become a Christian until many years later, when I moved to the South Side of Chicago after college. It happened not because of indoctrination or a sudden revelation, but because I spent month after month working with church folks who simply wanted to help neighbors who were down on their luck -- no matter what they looked like, or where they came from, or who they prayed to. It was on those streets, in those neighborhoods, that I first heard God's spirit beckon me. It was there that I felt called to a higher purpose -- His purpose."

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S REMARKS AT THE EASTER PRAYER BREAKFAST - APRIL 6, 2010

"I can't shed light on centuries of scriptural interpretation or bring any new understandings to those of you who reflect on Easter's meaning each and every year and each and every day. But what I can do is tell you what draws me to this holy day, and what lesson I take from Christ's sacrifice and what inspires me about the story of the Resurrection."

"As Christians, we believe that redemption can be delivered by faith in Jesus Christ. And the possibility of redemption can make straight the crookedness of a character and make whole the incompleteness of a soul."

CANDIDATE OBAMA CAMPAGIN EVENT - MARCH 26, 2008

My question is: What role does Jesus Christ play in your life? And how do his teachings and those of the Bible affect your decision- making in politics?

OBAMA: That's interesting. That's interesting. Well, look, it's a wonderful question. It's a complicated question, but it's a wonderful question.

I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and that his grace and his mercy and his power, through him, that I can achieve everlasting life. So that's what I believe.

Now, what I also believe in is a gospel of not just words, but deeds. And I believe in doing right here on Earth and treating people with the dignity and respect that is inherent in them being children of God, all people.

LOL!  I posted Obama's comments just to see if you could engage in semi-intelligent dialogue without the ad hominem.  The answer is "no."  :)

Not sure if you realize this, but almost every single one of your posts (that I see) on this board involves some kind of attack on someone.  (Yes, you don't care, etc., etc.)

I really like how the only defense in a direct observation regarding religious candidates running for office is met with such a hypocritical statement that it is almost funny.

Almost.

If you care at all (which you probably don't), just go back and read your posts on the board and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.  Or not.

What you did was call Huckabee a religious nut.  And now you're calling him a "religious candidate."  On what basis you call him a religious nut, and a "religious candidate"?

Don't try and confuse people with the facts.  I've pointed out several times how overtly religious Obama has been (at least in word).

McCain didn't have to be religious in his campaign.  Palin took over that part with much horrible effects.

It came down to the lesser of the two evils.
