practically, he knows clinton is better and explaining shit, and assigned that task. The same reason bush used Ari fleisher and obama uses Gibbs - they are articulate people.
In his head, he probably thought he was endearing himself to those married guy voters whose wife is shuffling them to christmas parties this time of year.
I don't know any residual effect this will have upon him. People like Clinton. he could have brought out Tom hanks or Glen CLose to explain shit, as people like them too.
I see repubs getting all pissed off about this - instead of the bait-switch move that Obama just played to perfection on the repubs - and I gotta laugh. He can tell the cameras in 2012 that he TRIED to work with repubs in 2010 by COMPLETELY AGREEING to the bush tax cuts that 87% of america wanted - and he can let the dems in senate take the fall for preventing it. "I tried to work across the aisle - I gave them whatever they wanted - but their plan was so extreme that senate dems declined it".
So that's my take. Obama passed off a duty to a likeable and knowledgeable person with a lot of capital with moderate and left voters (and many of you 'conservatives who voted cigar bubba in 92). He tried to endear himself to married guy voters. And it's a big issue for people who should be focusing on issues that affect them in any way.
