My mother-in-law was a school board president of a large district for many years.  It was a voluntary, unpaid position.

I know, read what I said about why "MOST" of these people join school boards.  The voluntary part is the exception, usually they are voted in by election.  The problem with the elections are that school districts in economically depressed areas, people do not vote.  So the person who is running gets in by friends or family (I've seen school board elections where people received only 20 votes and won)  The more affluent communities you have bussiness people who run where money is no object.  These types are members of a handful of groups or organizations (give donations) and therefore are backed by those groups locking in votes.  They also have the money to campaign, buying signs, advertisments, radio and TV spots.

May I ask you what were your monther-in-laws qualifications to be on a school board? (former teacher, professor, child advacate anyone with a background knowledge of education)  We already have politicians handing down mandates when they have no clue what those mandates are going to do.  So this is why I ask.

Also,  I do believe we should have a few parents on a school board.

Has nothing to do with the government.  Its People who are greedy put in positions that are in place to try and help children when all they are doing is helping themselves in some direct or indirect way.  For example,  in a local city nearby, why is a dry cleaning owner, president of the board of education?  In fact, he didn't even start the business, his father did, so all he's playing with is old money.  It is a crime what is going on in America's educational system and people don't care.  The mentality is as long as my kid can pass a test but one should also question, did your child REALLY pass the test or was it fudged to make the school and teacher look better?

Also everyone with children in the public school system should realize this also holds true with discipline.  Many disturbed children that go into "wild" sessions and hurt or threat others aren't even suspended  or dealt with according to one's schools policy.  They are sent to the office in some situations for a day or two, only to return to their classroom to cause further disturbances and hinder other childrens education.

HAHAHAHAHAH, just 7 minutes ago, read this story.  Another scum bag that "represents the children".  PROVES MY POINT!!!!!

http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/buffalo/Embattled-school-board-member-resigns

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Buffalo's School Board meets Wednesday night, and the question arising is: will a board member who's spent a lot of time in Maryland sit down with her colleagues?

Vivian Evans still has a home in Buffalo, but she now spends most of her time working in Maryland. However, she's stayed on the Buffalo School Board and doesn't see the cause of concern.

If Evans were to miss three meetings in a row, she would be removed from the School Board, per the policy in place. This almost happened in early November , but Evans showed up to the third meeting to ensure she kept her seat.

>> To learn more about this story, check out George Richert's report

The School Board has considered trying to remove Evans , but so far, there's been no way to remove Evans from the board under the district's policy. Now, the board has found a way to remove Evans from their ranks.

However, before the board could move to remove Evans, she resigned effective January 5th by a letter that was read at Wednesday night's meeting in her absense. The resignation was accepted by School Board President Ralph Hernandez. Now, board members are going through the process of posting for the position. The deadline for applications will be January 7th by noon.

Here is another article about it.  Only reason she resigned is because they CAUGHT her using her "district paid" cell phone to call home.

Vivian Evans phones home
Dec 15, 2010 7:46:26 AM / Comment
More than four months ago, Vivian Evans announced that she'd taken a job in Maryland, but planned to keep her seat on the Buffalo Board of Education. Ever since then, she's refused to talk about the specifics of where she lives or how much time she actually spends in Buffalo, among other things.

Well, maybe Evans isn't talking, but her cell phone records are.

Our story today reports that the past few months of bills for her district-owned cell phone indicate that she moved to Maryland at the end of July. She didn't come back to Buffalo at all in August or in October, according to the phone records.

(In September, when I prefaced a question to her by noting that she's living full time in Maryland, she shot back: "Am I? I think that's an assumption everyone's making." Hmm...)

While Evans has been living 400 miles away, she has not, in fact, been out of touch with the district. The East District rep has remained in contact with many of her fellow board members, as well as Superintendent James A. Williams, the records show.

Evans has been in closest contact with at large board member Florence Johnson; since
Evans moved to Maryland, the two exchanged more than 65 phone calls through the end of October. Evans and Christopher Jacobs exchanged about 30 calls in that time. And Evans has been in touch with the superintendent well over a dozen times.

But that's not all Evans has been using her district cell phone for.

She has also used her phone to call a variety of other people and places, including: New
York State's Department of Labor unemployment claims line; the New York State Department of
Taxation; M&T Bank; Bank of America; TIAA-CREF; the New York State Income Tax Protest and
Resolutions Bureau; the New York State Retirement System; and her ex-husband (15 times).

The district's cell phone policy, it might be worth noting, states that "employees shall make every attempt to use their district-owned cell phones for business purposes only."

Yes Mr. Klaus, you are right.  Sometimes people can't handle it and their coping mechanisms fail.  They reach a breaking point and can't return.  Depression can lead to this and often does.

She was a high school math teacher (algebra, I think) and I believe semi-retired when elected as president.  The first woman in that district to hold the position.  She raised her family in that community and all the kids went through that school system.  It was extremely stressful and I recall her getting calls all hours of the night from parents, but she was determined to make a difference.  And she did.  Her passing was front page news and her service was the largest I've ever been to.

Prin, I think she derserved to be there.  She at least knew what was going on in the schools and what education is all about along with what is handed down from the Feds to the State to the schools.  My problem are people that abuse and used the school district to further there resume and pad there pockets.  Gourmet meals, trips, freebies, you name it.  I have a hard time understanding how a Dry Cleaning owner can help a school district or that third grader coming from a broken home struggling in school.  I've seen board members that haven't even stepped into a classroom and show up to the meetings with "doggie bags" to take home food for there wives/husbands.  BUT THE BIG QUESTION IS.......

WHY IS THERE A BOARD OF EDUCATION?

HERE IS THE ANSWER:  ALL THE DISTRICTS IN A COUNTY SHOULD REPORT TO ONE REGIONAL BOARD AND THAT BOARD WOULD REPORT TO THE COMMISIONER OF EDUCATION.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

he was shooting blanks.

Go to 2:45

Although it's mentioned in the video he (a victim) thinks they're blanks, I haven't seen/heard any other news media report that.  Weren't there some injuries and bullet holes?  According to his wife, he was an excellent marksman and probably intentionally missed.
