Health group sues McDonald's over Happy Meal toys
By Associated Press
POSTED: 08:24 a.m. HST, Dec 15, 2010

PORTLAND, Ore. — A California mother and The Center for Science in the Public Interest have sued McDonald's Corp. trying to get the fast-food chain to stop using toys to market meals to young children.

The lawsuit was filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco on Wednesday morning.

They claim McDonald's decision to markets its meals directly to young children violates several consumer protection laws because it exploits a child's vulnerability.

McDonald's is facing increased scrutiny for the practice. San Francisco recently became the first city to prohibit fast-food restaurants from including toys with children's meals that don't met nutritional guidelines. A similar ordinance was passed in Santa Clara County.

Good lawsuit.  A terrible plague that needs to be stopped is the continued preying upon our nations youth to turn them into tiny consumers.

Hahaha oh brother.  Yea lets regulate companies to the point of completely removing responsibility of parents to raise their children.  That's exactly what this country needs, no one should be responsible for their own actions.

Oh god, if parents can't control their whinny kids, WTF

JUST say no for fricking crying out loud. These happy meals don't need to be a staple in the kids diet but goodness, no need to ban it. I don't see these parents jumping up and down and the crap food most kids get at school. THat's where it should be brought to the fore front first.

Its a stupid lawsuit.  What needs to happen is parents need to learn to say "no" and educate their children.  It's another example of a gigantic waste of time and money attacking a symptom and not the real problem.

It's obvious from childhood obesity rates that the current status quo is not working.

How is peddling fast food to under aged children a good thing?  Parent still have the choice to go or not to go, but now McD's can't seduce the youth with plastic and gimmicks.  It shouldn't stop there either.  No advertisements should be directed at our youth.  It's akin to the drug companies peddling their crap on tv.  How we allow it i'll never know.  We have the highest consuming population of junk sh*t and drugs in the world.  All because we DO NOT make rational decisions.  But hey heaven forbid we tell someone to stop marketing bullsh*t to us that's when we have a problem.

Wow, I think you would be better suited living in a communist country where the government can make all the decisions for you. But this is America, where you have a CHOICE.

Uh how about not.

Marketing leads to irrational decision making.  Because in essence marketing is designed to illicit an irrational response from a consumer to purchase the product.

But thanks for playing now please go have a cry like boehner

I believe in choice.  What i do not believe in is a free pass to market anything and everything without rules and regulations around it.

Where did say peddling sugar/fat rich foods was a good thing?

True, we have a obesity problem int he USA.  the ANSWER is to educate children to make the right choices and teach parents to say "no"

If anything, the parents should be sued or charged with child endangerment. (just being facetious to make a point)

I mean, what the hell are they doing taking their children to Micky Dees in the first place?

Further more, everyone really should be educated about food in general and how most of what you see in stores now a days is processed sugar rich crap.

My point is, the "toy" is NOT the problem, but simply a symptom of the real problem which is weak ass uneducated FAT parents.

If they really wanted to start solving this problem they could start it in the classrooms K though 12

The marketing blitz right now before the holidays is just brutal, try telling a 5 year old that. You have to explain without crushing their innocence. You don't get everything on tv or what's in the store. Explain their are people that go hungry every day and you wanna whine about getting a toy (in a nice way) and you know your're doing okay when they say "you get what you get and don't get upset".

Of course parenting isn't easy, but explaining and not given into their every whim is easy, plain and simple

Not at all.  But i don't believe McD's should be able to market to anyones child.  If you want to go there by all means, but the luring of children with toys has to stop.

I agree with this totally.  Education should be first and foremost the number 1 tool to combat obesity.  I think taking away marketing and toys is apart of that and helps it.

I'm glad Mrs Obama is out and about teaching kids about eating right and exercising but more needs to be done.
