The problem with Don't Ask Don't Tell was that the military went and searched personal information to find out who was gay and discharged them.  99% of gays in the military that were discharged never said shit to anyone but it didn't make difference when they can go through your letters, computer, cell phone, etc.  Pisses me off but you can't do shit about it....either take a general under honorable and get thrown on a Greyhound bus back home or get court martialed, humiliated, and drummed out with a bad conduct discharge.

You're full of shit.  I was in the military for 20 years and never once saw that happen.  I saw many times that the higher ups would turn a blind eye to people they knew were gay but didn't have proof.  They didn't try to find proof either, they would prefer to just pretend it didn't exist unless someone shoved it right in their faces.  It is also illegal for them to go through your letters, cell phone, computer, etc.  If you were dumb enough to put something personal on a military computer, then you get what you deserve.  No one would dare accuse anyone of being gay without absolute proof because they didn't want to have to fight some bullshit lawsuit.  Most of the people that get kicked out because they are gay wanted out and said they were gay so they would be put out without having to finish their contract.
