Exactly. You want to know today's bests: Gerald Cleaver, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilssen-Love, Jim Black. Just a few of them. One of the few great metal drummers is Dave Lombardo (I'm not talking about the classic drummers like John Bonham for example who could really play music).

Dave Lombardo admitted that the double bass was a drum machine in Angle of Death

there isnt a 'best', just a level which many individuals have reached in which they can pretty much play anything.

my favorite though is neal peart

Peart is a good drummer maybe a great one but definitely the most over-rated out there.

Like someone said the best drummers are jazzers- Tony Williams is probably my favourite.

Rock-wise, Bonham was great, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon- far less technically proficient than a lot of guys but still a great player, Dave Grohl is great to see live. Bill Ward of Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell is a very under-rated drummer.

lars ulrich is not even worth mentioning. Way over-hyped, terrible drum sound, and of course a c$%t

Lars and Kirk can barely play these days.

That guy is insanely awesome.

In real terms there's lots of great ones.

John Bonham was one of the best, although 'best' is a relative BS term I guess. Nick Barker, Derek Roddy, Hellhammer etc are all technically good but all rely on triggers, (Roddy maybe not?)

Gadd and Calleuta (?) both float my boat.

Jazz fusion drummer Virgil Donati is about a decade ahead of everyone.

Fast metal drumming is impressive, but those guys can't handle the crazy time signatures of high level jazz drumming.

This.  Lars Ullrich shouldnt even be mentioned in the same thread as this guy.

He's a great drummer but he plays with a shit pop band now. Too bad.

This guy is sick, especially when it hits 280 bpm.

ok- serious question-

i love music. i can listen to and enjoy pretty much anything.

but i just don't 'get' jazz. at all. to me it just sounds like noise of the worst kind. what am i missing? it sounds just off and like racket. no offense to anyone who likes it, but wtf am i missing here?
