How Obama Vacationed (Golfed)
 Weekly Standard ^ | December 27, 2012 | Daniel Halper

Posted on Thursday, December 27, 2012 3:37:31 PM by what's up

At 12:54 a.m., on Saturday December 22, President Barack Obama and his family arrived at Kailua, a Hawaiian town on the island of Oahu. Almost five days later, Obama, leaving his wife and kids behind, departed the island to return to Washington, D.C. Obama’s vacation lasted a brief 118 hours, according to pool reports.

-snip-

On Christmas Eve, December 24, Obama departed his vacation home at 9:33 a.m., according to the pool report. He remained on the golf course until 3:15, p.m., spending about 5 and a half hours on the golf course. He again golfed that day with Bobby Titcomb, Mike Ramos, and Greg Orme.

Obama also worked out (as he did for about more than an hour on Christmas Eve, an hour and a half on the morning of Christmas Day, for an hour on the 26th)

In addition to his brief time at the beach, outings with his family included a brief two-hour hike with Michelle Obama and their daughters.

After a contentious battle with Congress and midnight flight to Hawaii, President Obama got right back into vacation mode.

After landing in Honolulu just before 5 a.m., he headed to the home in Kailua where his wife and daughters had been vacationing without him.

Then he got an early start with a workout at the gym, and later hit the links at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe.

UPDATE: His golf partners included longtime friends Marty Nesbitt, Bobby Titcomb and Allison Davis, according to a pool report.

Obama Golfed in Hawaii with Former Rezko Crony
 whitehousedossier ^ | 1/9/13 | Keith Koffler

Posted on Wednesday, January 09, 2013 6:04:00 PM by Nachum

While on vacation in Hawaii this month, President Obama played golf with Allison Davis, a former business partner of Tony Rezko who also helped give Obama his start in the legal profession.

Rezko is the former Obama associate and fundraiser who was convicted of corruption and fraud and currently sits in prison.

Davis, who is male, partnered with Rezko on a series of government-funded low and mixed income housing development projects in Chicago. While Davis himself has never been charged with wrongdoing, a number of the projects were high-priced failures that resulted in poor living conditions for residents.

According to a June 2008 exposé in the Boston Globe, one of the most egregious projects Davis helped create was Grove Parc Plaza, an assembly of “squat brick buildings” located in Obama’s former state senate district. According to the Globe:

About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale – a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golftalkcentral/president-obama-to-receive-golf-lessons-from-harmons

When President Barack Obama heads to Palm City, Fla. this weekend for a golf trip, he'll also be setting some time aside for a lesson or two.

According to a Golf Digest report from Golf Channel contributor Tim Rosaforte, Obama's upcoming visit to The Floridian Golf Club will also include lessons from noted instructor Butch Harmon and his son, Claude III. The Harmons will fly down to the course, where they have already established a learning center, specifically to offer tips to the Commander-in-Chief.

"I've played golf with Ike, Nixon, Ford and President Bush 41," Butch Harmon explained to Rosaforte. "I know the President is a real keen golfer ... I'm looking forward to it. It should be fun."

The President will spend the weekend as a guest of Jim Crane, who owns The Floridian in addition to the Houston Astros baseball team. Crane reportedly received a call last week while participating in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from the President's staff, indicating Obama's interest in visiting his facility.

The elder Harmon, who famously coached Tiger Woods early in his career, appears eager to take on the task of analyzing the President's game.

"He's a left-handed player, I've seen film of his swing before," he explained. "It'll be fun getting him down in the learning center, show him stuff in his golf game and see how he takes it to the course.

"He's just like all of us that play golf," Harmon added. "He wants to get better."

Barack Obama has kept the press well away this President’s Day (Washington's Birthday) weekend (hat tip: Drudge Report) as he golfs with Tiger Woods in Florida. As Politico’s Dylan Byers writes:
Ed Henry, the Fox News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents Association, released a statement Sunday evening in which he said the press corps had been given no access to the president, who was joined on his outing by star golfer Tiger Woods, and that the WHCA would fight for greater transparency in the days ahead.
"Speaking on behalf of the White House Correspondents Association, I can say a broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the President of the United States this entire weekend," Henry said in a statement, relayed in a White House pool report. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."
More details on the president’s golfing getaway at a highly exclusive club are provided by the Associated Press, which reported earlier:
President Barack Obama played golf Sunday with Tiger Woods, the White House said Sunday. Once the sport's dominant player before his career was sidetracked by scandal, Woods joined Obama at the Floridian, a secluded and exclusive yacht and golf club on Florida's Treasure Coast where Obama is spending the long Presidents Day weekend. The two had met before, but Sunday was the first time they played together.
The White House, which has promised to be the most open and transparent in history, has prohibited any media coverage of Obama's golf outing.
The foursome also included Jim Crane, a Houston businessman who owns the Floridian and baseball's Houston Astros, and outgoing US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Crane and Kirk also were part of Obama's foursome on Saturday, the White House said.
President Obama’s latest mini-vacation follows in the wake of his lavish Christmas/ New Year holiday on Kailua Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, which cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $7 million. As veteran White House reporter Keith Koffler noted at the time:
In a move that is rich in irony, President Obama agreed Tuesday night to sign an emergency deficit reduction bill that does almost nothing to rein in spending and then jetted out to Hawaii to resume his vacation at an extra cost of more than $3 million to taxpayers.
The price tag is in addition to more than $4 million that is already being spent on the Obamas’ Hawaii idyll, bringing the total cost of the excursion to well over $7 million. The added cost was incurred because by the time the Obamas return from Hawaii – whenever that is – the president will have used Air Force One to travel to Honolulu and back twice.
According to Koffler, "the total cost to taxpayers of Obama’s vacations to Hawaii since becoming president is likely in excess of $20 million, and possibly much, much more."
It is not hard to see why Barack Obama is rather camera shy over his latest golfing outing, this time with sports superstar Tiger Woods. The optics certainly don’t look good for a president who has in the past called on Americans to make sacrifices, while blatantly refusing to do so himself. It’s certainly not an image the president wants to project to the 12.3 million Americans who are out of work, or the millions more who are also seeking full-time employment. Nor does it suggest he is serious about reining in the $16.5 trillion of debt his government owes, $6 trillion of which was racked up in his first term of office. Flying Air Force One to Florida at a cost of about $180,000 per hour hardly sends the right message to US taxpayers, who have just seen their payroll taxes go up. This is the latest demonstration of an overwhelming culture of impunity in a celebrity-obsessed Obama White House, frequently coupled with a disturbing lack of transparency that would be roundly condemned by the likes of The New York Times, NBC, or CBS if a Republican were in office. It is also a presidency that is rife with hypocrisy, as Obama’s words in Virginia in April 2011 perfectly convey:
We are going to have to ask everybody to sacrifice. And if we’re asking community colleges to sacrifice, if we’re asking people who are going to see potentially fewer services in their neighborhoods to make a little sacrifice, then we can ask millionaires and billionaires to make a little sacrifice.

White House Press Corps: 'Extreme Frustration' With Lack Of Obama Access

The Huffington Post  |  By Jack Mirkinson Posted: 02/18/2013 7:22 am EST  |  Updated: 02/18/2013 8:11 am EST

White House Press Corps, Obama Tiger Woods, Wh Press Corps, White House Correspondents Association, White House Correspondents Obama, White House Press Corps Extreme Frustration, White House Press Corps Obama, Media News
.

The White House press corps expressed "extreme frustration" at the Obama administration Sunday after it was barred from being able to report on President Obama's golf outing with Tiger Woods.

The reporters who cover Obama every day were kept well away from the president as he hit the links. However, Tim Rosaforte, a writer for Golf Digest and Golf World, did get some access to the golfer-in-chief, and happily tweeted the event exclusively for hours.

The White House pool report, which was written by Agence France-Presse reporter Tangi Quemener and was posted at BuzzFeed and other outlets, expressed the mounting anger of the press corps:

We got confirmation at 1:45 PM that POTUS had been hitting the links with Tiger Woods inside the "Floridian" golf compound, 20 minutes away from the pool hotel. Your pool has been aware since this morning that a reporter, Tim Rosaforte, had been tweeting and talking on the Golf Channel about the POTUS/Woods game from inside the compound. Still officially under a lid, we decided to assemble and at 2:10 PM we logged a request to the White House for access to the President's game for a photo-op, like this administration and previous ones have granted in the past. We were told that we were free to travel to the Floridian but wouldn't get access to POTUS. After some back and forth, our handlers finally arrived at 4:17 PM and our bus was on the move quickly afterwards. We reached the Floridian's gates at 4:37. We're holding outside the compound and we're told that the President is not moving out of the Floridian and that the lid is still in place.

Ed Henry, the Fox News reporter who is president of the WHCA, issued a stern statement protesting the exclusion:

Speaking on behalf of the White House Correspondents Association, I can say a broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the President of the United States this entire weekend. There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency.

Josh Earnest, the deputy press secretary for Obama, replied that the treatment was, to use a phrase, par for the course:

"The press access granted by the White House today is entirely consistent with the press access offered for previous presidential golf outings. It's also consistent with the press access promised to the White House Press Corps prior to arrival in Florida on Friday evening."

The White House press corps has often complained in the past about its level of access to Obama.

Tiger Woods Lost To A Guy He Had Beaten 75 Times In A Row

Jay Yarow|Feb. 22, 2013, 9:46 AM|133|1

Tiger Woods lost in the first round of the Accenture Match Play yesterday to Charles Howell III.

It's not a massive surprise that Woods was sent packing early. He hasn't played well at Dove Mountain, the course that hosted the Match Play. He lost in the second round last year and the first round the time before that.

But it is surprising that he lost to Howell, because he was undefeated against Howell.

Howell and Woods have played against each other for years. They started as amateurs, then were members at the same golf club in Florida. Through the years, playing matches professionally and on the side for fun, Woods had always beaten Howell.

After the match, Howell estimated that he had lost 75 times in a row against Woods. He kept expecting Woods to eventually beat him, but it didn't happen.

Woods didn't play poorly yesterday. He missed a few shots here and there and lipped out a putt, but he didn't have a single bogey. Howell just outplayed him. He was draining putts from all over the greens.

If you want to get a big picture story on Woods for this year from this loss, you're out of luck. It was a freaky event — there was a snow storm that delayed Woods and Howell's match. As we've already noted, Woods hates this course. He can't get the greens figured out. And, it's not like he played poorly. It was a good round.

We'll get a better idea about Woods game next weekend when he plays at the Honda Classic in Florida. Woods was a two shots away from winning that event last year.

We suppose if you want to do the big picture thing, you could note that Woods aura of invincibility took another hit yesterday. But, really that's been going on since 2009 when he lost to Y.E. Yang in the PGA Championship, and then a few months later when he crashed his car into a fire hydrant.

One other note from the tournament: Rory McIlroy also lost in the first round. Unlike Woods, McIlroy didn't play well. Either his swing is rusty, or his new Nike equipment is giving him problems. He hasn't played very much this year. This was just his third round of the year in competition.

Does anyone know how many hours a night Obama sleeps? If it's over 4 hours, then he's playing too much golf. If its 4 hours or under, then a couple of hours a week to golf is no problem imop. Donald Trump says that he himself sleeps 4 hours or less.

Amid Cuts, Does a President Dare Tee Off?

By MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Published: March 6, 2013

WASHINGTON — Fair or not, the extracurricular lives of American presidents are often measured by how they compare with the everyday pursuits of the people they lead.

And so as the nation’s federal workers and others prepare to tighten their belts amid budget cuts, reduced overtime and furloughs, it is inevitable that someone would ask the question about President Obama and golf.

It came this week from, among others, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and Republican presidential candidate, who expressed outrage that the White House had canceled daily tours of 1600 Pennsylvania at the behest of the Secret Service, which said its officers were needed more elsewhere.

“Canceling White House tours is childish and dishonest,” Mr. Gingrich said on Twitter, citing a recent golf vacation the president took to the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club resort with a handful of friends and his Secret Service entourage. “The golf weekend in Florida cost enough to keep the White House open for months.”

Representative Louie Gohmert, Republican of Texas, even proposed an amendment that would prohibit the president from going on any more golf trips at federal expense until the tours resume at the White House.

Ari Fleischer, press secretary to President George W. Bush, said: “If George Bush were playing golf while this was under way, there would be pandemonium in the press corps about it.”

For Mr. Obama, the months ahead will be tricky. Few people object to a president taking some time to relax — to work out, play basketball, sit on a beach, go to dinner. And like all presidents before him, Mr. Obama does all those things with the costly machinery of government orbiting around him.

But the budget cuts known as sequestration are going to have an outsize effect on government workers who, like Mr. Obama, get their paycheck from the federal treasury. Some will be furloughed as often as once a week. Others will lose overtime, forcing them to cancel vacations or trim household expenses.

Officials said the White House staff would be affected, too. Some people will be furloughed, some nonessential equipment purchases will be delayed, and some staff members — though, by law, not the president himself — will be subject to reduced salaries.

“People are going to be hurt,” Mr. Obama declared just hours before the cuts went into effect last week.

So the president’s White House advisers are going to have to confront the question of how, or whether, to adjust his family’s activities. Should they go to Martha’s Vineyard? Will Michelle Obama and the couple’s daughters avoid trips like the ski vacation they took to Aspen last month? And what about the golf that Mr. Obama frequently plays at the nearby Joint Base Andrews?

Mr. Fleischer pointed out that the Pentagon’s leaders have warned that the budget cuts will have a serious impact on the readiness of the nation’s military. “What does it say about a sequester if a military golf course can stay open during it?” he said.

Charlie Black, a Republican consultant, said presidents deserved some time off, but added that Mr. Obama was vulnerable to criticism because he and his advisers “blew way out of proportion” the impact of the cuts.

“Maybe the crisis the president inflated will be alleviated enough for him to go to Martha’s Vineyard in August,” Mr. Black said.

A White House adviser said he did not know what Mr. Obama’s plans were for trips in the coming months, but he said the president’s staff would consider the impact of the budget cuts at the time.

“It’s too early to say,” said Josh Earnest, the deputy White House press secretary. “But he is the president of the United States wherever he goes, 24 hours a day. People don’t begrudge him taking a little time off.”

If the past is any guide, Mr. Obama tends to push ahead with life outside his day job even when it is sure to risk criticism.

The Obamas spent a week at an estate in Martha’s Vineyard in 2009 and 2010, even as the economic crisis was still gripping the country. In 2011, he went to the island just after the debt crisis fight but left early after an earthquake hit Washington and Hurricane Irene headed toward the East Coast.

Mr. Obama has also traveled to Hawaii each year in late December and his family has taken short vacations to Yosemite and the mountains of North Carolina. Mrs. Obama, her daughter Sasha and some friends took a trip to Spain in the summer of 2010 that drew criticism for its cost.

Such is the life of a modern president and his family. The first President Bush was mocked as out of touch when he was seen on a speedboat in Kennebunkport, Maine, during an economic downturn. President Bill Clinton hobnobbed with Hollywood glitterati and took heat for it.

And like Mr. Obama, the second President Bush was criticized for his frequent golf outings, which sometimes made him seem disconnected from the grim task of leading a nation in war.

For Mr. Obama, the golf weekend in Florida last month drew criticism at the time. But that was before budget cuts that officials say will build in intensity over the spring and summer.

For now, aides say they know of no plans for another such outing.

Obama Golfs—Third Weekend in a Row [What me worry?.......]
Weekly Standard ^
Posted on April 13, 2013 2:45:38 PM EDT by Sub-Driver

Obama Golfs—Third Weekend in a Row Daniel Halper April 13, 2013 12:59 PM

For the third weekend in a row, President Obama is hitting the links. CBS's Mark Knoller reports on Twitter:

On a mild Spring day in DC, Pres Obama is playing a round of golf at Andrews. Third Saturday in a row.

This weekend the Masters is being held in Augusta, Georgia, where Obama's golf buddy, Tiger Woods, has once again found himself at the center of attention.

Via the pool report:

On a cloudy but quite nice day, POTUS is hitting the links.

At 12:11 pm, he left from the North Portico of the White House. Your pooler only caught the slightest glimpse, but it looked like POTUS was wearing a windbreaker.

Pennsylvania Ave was shut down, with yellow tape holding back scores of onlookers in Lafayette Park.

Some of those onlookers smiled and took photos. Others were protesters, shouting something your pooler couldn't decipher (but thanks to the long lens of a pool photographer, it was possible to make out an anti-drone banner that depicted a drone striking a little family).

After an uneventful motorcade ride, we arrived at Andrews AFB around 12:40pm. As POTUS headed toward the golf course, pool split off and is holding in the food court at the Base Exchange.

Per a White House aide, here's the list of those playing golf with POTUS (all of them WH aides):

Marvin Nicholson Joe Paulsen
