Why does Mentzer always look like a serial killer in all candid pictures taken of him?  That or the guy from the lovely bones...

"1"

this picture is from George Snyders home and was in the series 3 more reps, not the Olympia.

here it is

Their body language needs no translation, Mike is the fucking man looking Arnie right in his eyes, while Arnie fails to be cool about it with his legs crossed.

Arnold is a puck ass bitch.  If he would have ever been challenged to a fight you would have seen how non Alpha he was...He's a fucking poser....a fucking poser.

Arnold said in his book that he liked to "hit people on top of their head"

Arnold was a badass and would have beat your black ass up and down the street

He admitted that he was the troublemaker/seeker in a early stage of his career and felt bad after that

I bet if anyone really would have tried to get physical with Arnold his buddy Franco would have jumped in and whooped their ass.

As far as Arnold being intimidated in that pic, highly unlikely, however Mentzer was a loose cannon, a bit crazy and Arnold was not a fighter.

But your post needs translation. You see, Mikey is so easily amped up that Arnold knew he did his job - he got under his skin!

Nothing better than getting under someone's skin.  ;)

This is truth.
Everyone is looking at it like Mentzer is someone out-willing Arnold, when its clear that Arnold did exactly what he wanted, got into Mikes head, and Mike is fooking loosing it, while Arnold is still cool and composed, like he always is.
If you watched Pumping Iron you know that is EXACTLY what Arnold tries to do on contest day.

Yes, Mike's weakness was his hot-tempered personality while Arnold's strength was his superiority feeling. Still I give Mike credit because he was one of the few who challenged Arnold for a discussion (not sure if it was a HIT vs. volume debate or something personal). It's obvious Arnold was not used to this, so he tried (well, failed) to be cool about it. I'll bet Arnold was pretty pissed off after this. Arnold's weak point is that he can't handle critique (there are numerous examples in his life of this) by not going into a debate but do some silly mind owning instead, so yes, IMO Mike is still the fucking man in this case.

If anything, Arnold welcomes critique! It's like adding fuel to the fire which gave him the drive to prove others wrong.

And you said it yourself, Arnold did "mind owning" which made him the winner, if you will. So how Mike is the fucking man makes no sense.

His only 'proof' was his success on stage and as a businessman. The foundation of this was his strong willpower and self-assurance, not(!) by great genetics or good arguments. He only welcomed critique if it was in his(!) advantage, like the feedback from his financier Joe Weider ("don't bite your feeder").
This book, for example is full of critical anecdotes about him, and guess what? He sued Wendy Leigh for this trying to prevent it's publication.

Hold on, I think you and me have other values on this, which is fine. I have more respect for someone with good debating skills (Mike was not allways tactical, but he came with arguments), than someone with good mind owning skills

Sorry, but you don't get the IFBB Gold Order proclaiming you to be the greatest bodybuilder of the 20th century without great genetics.  ;)

As a GB vet you know that his genetics are heavily disputed. His BB success is based on hard work, lots of drugs (thanks to his financial success) and his charisma, but not by 'great genetics' like Serge Nubret or Robby Robinson.

was it in his book or somewhere else that he said he suceeded in winding Mentzer up and that he wasn't about to have a fight with him as his mind was on winning a contest so that would have just been stupid.

According to Rick Wayne, The author of Muscle Wars, Arnold pissed off Mike Mentzer backstage at the 1980 Olympia with these words: "Mike, the only thing bigger than your belly is your mouth" (or something like that)

problem with mentzer in 1980, is that he actually believed he had a chance

the guy was great, but not good enough

I got that book and it's pretty good.
