Do you know how many parents can't speak english and rely on their children to translate for them during teacher conference day?  If they cared one bit, they would learn the language so they can communicate with the people who are teaching their children.  Around 90% that I see have no jobs and depend on the New York State Welfare system.  Welfare doesn't bother me until it becomes a crutch and one year turns into five, then ten, etc. etc.   The ESL (English as a second language) classes are chuck full of kids with parents that have no clue what is going on.
