Austin changed the face of wrestling in the mid ninties and introduced the "attitude era" which IMO was the best era of wrestling. Austin from 1996-2002 was GOLD.

Does anybody have any of the numerous Austin DVD's that WWE put out?
I loved his mic/promo work in the Fed, but his ECW stuff was golden.
I wouldn't mind getting a compilation that features a fair amount of that footage.

I know he gets a lot of shit, but Shane Douglas delivered some damn good material on the stick.
A lot of his promos came across powerful and barbed with a lot of hidden (and not so hidden) truth.

Austin was great on the mic, anywhere he was at.

Douglas WAS good at his trade but he has had the worst luck. When he came to the WWE as Dean Douglas, he hit rock bottom with the locker room and road agents backstage with his attitude and after lipping off to the wrong people, it cost him a chance to make real money in the WWE.

I agree.  The gimmick did not suit him at all.  the timing was bad for him going to the WWF.  He would have been perfect at the beginning of the attitude era.  And by all accounts he had no clue when to keep his pie-hole shut backstage.

Great link to that thread.  I missed it somehow.  I always thought Douglas was the perfect ECW champion, much better than Taz.  And WCW just squandered away what could have been a whole slew of great guys coming in from ECW.  No reason to do a "takeover" angle, just blend them with the talent, but give them some leeway on how to get over.

Wasn't he also and Army Ranger?  I think I heard that at one point.  Not that "eating bugs" makes you a badass or anything... ;D

I loved Austin. From 96-97, he was amazing. Just a badass guy who took out whoever got in his way. He was great with Pillman with the Hollywood Blonds. Just an amazing talent. This is my favorite promo ever

Wasn't Saturn shot twice in the neck stopping a rape?

The whole "attitude era" was filled with first class talkers and stars that entertained, the watered down "pg" version that's around today is unimaginative and boring.

That's right.
Saturn also retired from wrestling not too long ago and all but vanished from the face of the earth.
He didn't even attend his friend & mentor Kowalski's funeral.
I believe that Meltzer's site was among the first to post current pics of Perry along with what is believed to be his family.

According to Foley, when developing the original Mankind characther, the old man told him the WWF had wanted to adopt an edgier style analogous to ECW (though, maybe not as extreme) years earlier, but felt compelled to remain almost G-rated as a result of all the negative press from the recent scandals.
In fact, at one point, I'm sure you know that Vince was threatened to lose his key TV spots if he kept up with the violence; a lot of this was the result of pressure from the different television/censorship groups.
Those groups were also effectively convincing many sponsors to pull their advertising from WWF programming.

Unlike WCW, who was owned by television company, Vince lived and died by his TV and sponsorships.

Pillman was fantastic.
I’m sorry I’d fallen away from following the show(s) around the time leading up to his breakout performance of “the loose cannon” gimmick.
That was definitely some of his best mic, promo, and character work, although - after the Humvee accident - his ring work would probably never have been the same again.

I always dug Pillman’s later look, too; with the black boots, jeans, and leather vest over the t-shirt.
And the shades…who could forget these:







I’ve always wanted a pair of those damn flip-ups, but, as I am not Pillman the Magnificent, and he was the only one who could effectively pull it off…




But, I’m still thinking about getting these:

Lol...you mean the tee shirt he wore that said " I don't dial 911" and the back had a Smith Weston?  :) Pillman was phenomenal. I thought he was a good score for the WWE at the time. Has anyone here seen his DVD?
