McCarthy readies gun control bill

One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday.

McCarthy ran for Congress after her husband was gunned down and her son seriously injured in a shooting in 1993 on a Long Island commuter train.

“My staff is working on looking at the different legislation fixes that we might be able to do and we might be able to introduce as early as tomorrow,” McCarthy told POLITICO in a Sunday afternoon phone interview.

Gun control activists cried it was time to reform weapons laws in the United States, almost immediately after a gunman killed six and injured 14 more, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in Arizona on Saturday.

Many said that people with a history of mental instability, like the alleged shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, should not be able to buy a gun — and no one should be able to buy stockpiles of ammunition used by the 22-year-old assailant.

McCarthy said she plans to confer with House Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to see “if we can work something through” in the coming week.

McCarthy’s bill will look to protect ordinary people, she said, but did not offer further details.

“Again, we need to look at how this is going to work, to protect people, certainly citizens, and we have to look at what I can pass,” she said. “I don’t want to give the NRA – excuse the pun – the ammunition to come at me either.”

Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Brady, a Democrat from Philadelphia, told CNN that he also plans to take legislative action. He will introduce a bill that would make it a crime for anyone to use language or symbols that could be seen as threatening or violent against a federal official, including a member of Congress.

Another vocal supporter for gun control, Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley, told POLITICO that he hopes “something good” can come from the Arizona tragedy – perhaps discussion on a new assault weapon ban, sales at gun shows and tracing measures.

Loughner legally purchased his weapon – a Glock 19 with an extended magazine – from an Arizona store. The same kind of extended magazine was illegal under the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

“The ability to buy a weapon that fires hundreds of bullets in less than a minute,” said Quigley. “He had an additional magazine capability. That’s not what a hunter needs. That’s not what someone needs to defend their home. That’s what you use to hunt people.”

After the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, in which a student with a history of psychological problems killed 33 and injured 25 others, lawmakers immediately started looking at gun control reforms both in the state and atthe federal level.

Then-Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine issued an executive order making it harder for people who have been committed to mental health treatment centers to buy a gun.

In 2008 President George W. Bush signed a law expanding the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which registered gun dealers use, to include more comprehensive reporting of mental health records. Under the current law, it is illegal for anyone who has been “adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution” to purchase a firearm, according to the FBI’s website.

However, Loughner did not fall into either of those categories, according to Josh Horwitz, the executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

“I’ve seen no evidence that he falls into those categories. It’s the same thing as this guy at Virginia Tech,” said Horwitz. “We can do a much better job checking people’s mental health background.”

yup, and this is just the tip of the iceburg.  They're going to use this to crack down on anything they can tie to this shooting.  after it's over, saying you don't trust the government might leave you with problems.

agreed.

You'll have 3 to 5 vocal dems in very liberal districts who will get on their soapbox, maybe talk about introducing a bill.

It's all symbolic, everyone with a brain knows 98% of Congress won't go near gun control, and Obama sure as hell isn't touching the issue.

But, you'll have far right Rush listeners screaming that "Obama's making his move!".  The NRA will get a few million bucks from the deal, we'll argue about it for a week.  happens every time.

Lautenberg to reintroduce gun-ban bill
The Hill ^

Lautenberg to reintroduce gun-ban bill By Daniel Strauss - 01/10/11 05:52 PM ET

One of the Senate's most outspoken advocates of tighter gun restrictions said he plans to introduce language banning the type of supplemented gun clips that the shooter in Arizona used on Saturday.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) promised to bring back legislation that had expired in 2004 that would prohibit the use of magazines of 10 rounds or more, according to The Associated Press.

"The only reason to have 33 bullets loaded in a handgun is to kill a lot of people very quickly. These high-capacity clips simply should not be on the market," Lautenberg said in a statement.

Lautenberg plans to file the bill later this month, after Congress reconvenes.

Law enforcement officials say that the suspect used a gun with a clip that held 33 rounds, according to the AP.

Similarly, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) announced plans for a bill that would increase gun restrictions.

They are going to try to go after hi cap mags over 10 rounds for everything.   I'm listening to a good radio show now John Batchelor who is discussing this with some capital hill staffers and he said that is what they are going t try to do.

Things is, next guns shows around here, you wont be able to touch those things, they will be sold out in seconds.

I have about 6 mags for my G17 and 5 for my G26.

Glock 9mm IMHO are one of the best guns ever made for the price, especially due to the fact that you can interchange the mags on the 17, 19, and 26.

Neither do the RIGHT wing crazies ;)

If I walk into my local gun shop tomorrow and ask the guy working if this shooting means i won't be able to get those high-caps next year.... I'm betting he's going to get me scared and excited and in a buying mood ;)

Same with politicians vying for your vote or donation.  Same with "news" station vying for your viewing hours/rating$.

All of these entities, right and left, prey upon your fears and emotion for your money, vote, or viewing time.

The moment this guy was tackled, people at MSNBC, FOX, gun stores, NRA, Brady Association, and both sides of congress were scrambling looking for ways to further their agenda and get rich from it.  Believe that ;)

Congress readies new gun-control bills after Gabrielle Giffords shooting
Christian Science Monitor ^ | January 11, 2011 | Linda Feldmann

Congressional advocates of gun control are preparing legislation to renew a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines of the sort suspected used in last Saturday’s shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz.

Such a ban was in effect between 1994 and 2004 as part of a ban on assault weapons, which also expired. Since then, clips such as those allegedly used by suspect Jared Loughner, which contained more than 30 rounds, have been available for purchase without restriction. Legislation restricting ammunition magazines to a maximum 10 rounds is in the works by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D) of New York and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) of New Jersey.

The tragedy in Tucson might not have resulted in so many deaths and injuries if the gunman had been limited to 10 rounds before attempting to reload, gun control advocates say. In all, six people died and 14 were wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) of Arizona.

Congresswoman McCarthy, who ran for Congress after her husband was killed and son injured in a 1993 shooting on the Long Island Rail Road, suggests she is focusing on ammunition magazines as opposed to the weapons themselves in a bow to political reality.

“I have to look at ... what can actually pass in Congress and have it signed by the president,” McCarthy said Tuesday in an interview with National Public Radio. “The House and the Senate are pro-gun houses.”

Many Democrats in both Houses of Congress – including Congresswoman Giffords – favor broad gun rights, and so passing legislation that limits the size of ammunition clips could be an uphill climb. But the history of gun control legislation is that it has its best chance after a major firearms-related event.

mccarthy was on nbc tonight, admitting that while she knows the bill will fail in the house and the senate, blah blah blah.

she's pandering for votes in 2012.  it's that simple.   She knows it won't pass.
