One arm 350pound dumbell lift (grip purpose)
« on: January 11, 2011, 06:41:23 AM »

The max in the gym as 120kg (264) pound, so he had to improvise lol.

Have anyone tried lifting just 200 pounders?

My grip sucks dick so I dont really have anything to go on lol.

There was a pic of one poster, years ago, that showed him having picked up an oly with weight totaling 275 with one hand, at his side. I always thought that was cool.

I remember that - I went to the gym and tried it and could do 220lbs olympic bar picked up from the middle.

We used to have 100kg (220lb) dumbells at Temple Gym but they got rid of them because nobody really used them. They were damn heavy and we also had other dumbells from the rack going up to 180lbs (the 220's were a one off) and I had tried the 180s for shrugs.

Our dumbells only go up to 150s now.

Gym I currently train at doesn't even have those heavy dumbbells... LOL
Heaviest is 90 pounders... Talk about hardcore  ;D  Branch wouldn't last a minute at that gym as there is no chains neither  :D

Farmers walk/farmers hold is almost the same thing. There's lots of reference for those in strongman competitions and practise. I think any healthy man is able to hold on to 100 kg with one hand. To add: This isn't any ultimatum. There's nothing wrong with a man if he can't do it. But if I saw an average untrained man trying that I would cheer him on and really believe he could do it.

Was that the poster Armz, who made a thread about his (then) new gym?

Can't remember, but I do recall that a lot of us went to the gym the next day and tried it out. I only used a 120 db. No way I was gonna try a bar with 275. Probably woulda tilted me into the stairwell, or into PT.

I remember seeing a picture of a guy placing two 45lb plates with the outsides facing each other touching and using a pinch grip to pick up the two plates together (with one hand obviously). I tried it in the gym and failed badly - lifting 90lbs like that is a lot harder than it looks.

Took years and years in the workshop, but our Vince invented the thumb. Should have patented that sucker.

I have to confess, I have sometimes had trouble carrying a smooth 10 kg plate with a pinch grip.  :-[

There are 500+ one hand DL's (some for reps in regular training), so not that uncommon. Some with straps, some without. Usually with an Olympic bar, which makes it that much harder considering balancing the bar.  Most people can (if they tried) DL almost the same amount of weight with one hand than as two.

I was looking at one of my old Ironman mags the other day and they had an article titled "The Captains Of Crush". At the time a guy named Richard Sorin supposedly had the strongest grip in the world. He could pinch grip a pair of the old York wide 45 plates with the thinner rims. He could also swing his arm back and forth while doing it. He could also close a #3 IronMind gripper, which supposedly no one else was able to do. I just googled him and found out that he was recertified on the #3 gripper, making him the oldest man able to accomplish it.

I used to have to stack dumbells like that to get a heavy enough row at my old twink gym
