Another question for the guitar players here
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:31:09 AM »
I've been wanting to learn to play since I was a kid.  I even ordered a guitar and amp a few years back, which due to the demands of the job I had and a lot of misplaced priorities in life has sat in the closet since the first couple weeks I got it.   Anyway, I was wondering if any of you knew of any free sites that teach how to play electric guitar?  I would like something that has video to explain tabs, and shows demonstrations on how to play since I learn best by watching/ doing.

Thanks in advance for any advices! 8)

Thanks a bunch you guys.  There's plenty of info to search just from those three links! 8)

ManBearPig, the "lesson a day" thread alone on that site is an incredible resource!

How long have you guys been playing?  What did you find to be the hardest thing to learn when getting started?

just find the tabs of songs/song fragments you like online and that will give you a basic framework of how the sounds/notes are laid out on a fretboard.
then just turn on the radio or a cd and start trying to play notes and then sequences of notes that fit with it....you will sound bad at first obviously but eventually your playing will improve fast...this helps you get a feel for time the same way a metronome will but will be far less boring and monotonous and will improve your playing in a real world sense

Take lessons. You will progress much quicker than attempting to learn on your own via tuts and tabs.

Times 1000!
Took me 17 years to figure out some pretty basic stuff.

great advice.  Even the most gifted musicians had to start with some kind of lesson.  I still reference youtube if I want to learn a song real quick.  The trouble with tabs from some sites is that what you get is someones attempt at transposing the song.  That doesn't mean it is correct.  There might be 10 different ways (right or wrong) to play just one song that is posted.

Dude, just go on youtube there's like 8,000,000 videos on everything from basic chords to advanced shit like scales, modes, circle of fifth's , etc.

good luck! the biggest bitch is getting over the finger pains when starting, once your fingers get callouses it will be a walk in the park, also get your hand used to chord shapes and learn the basics/fundamentals of chord shapes and how they transfer all over the fretboard, also octaves and maj/min 3rd's

I never had an issue with finger pains.  I started playing at 5 on a dobro with rusty strings so I built a prettty good natural base in my hands.

once you hit the natural limit you'll have to MUTATE and start using .9s tuned half a step down, adjust action if necesarry.

good advice.

then, when you learn basic chords and power chord structure, and your box scales... play along with the TV, 24/7.  You'll get them down fast, just jam with anything.

Ya, anyone who takes lessons for more then 6 months is a loser and has no business playing, it's one thing to get the basic chord and scale shapes down but guys that are still taking lessons after a couple of years are pathetic, guitar should be about exploration and personal reflection, plus at some point theory and lessons start to hinder creativity, you start getting locked in predictable patterns because you know for instance Em pentatonic fits *well* over a certain chord progression, you stop challenging yourself and just go with the simplest approach.

He's ok. That's standard classical and flamenco technique.

Many other do it better; Fernando Sor, Andre Segovia, Christopher Parkening etc etc.

Even Miss Boyd. Pity about her picking hand issues of late.

Can't forget Charo too!

One of the best guys on youtube, hands down..this guy just slays,

he plays classical/flamenco/jazz interpretations of popular songs, the fucking guy manages to play the bass line, the syncopated rhythm's/percussion and guitar parts, once in a while he'll throw in a vocal line as well...absolutely ridiculous

his percussive rhythm's alone make it worthwhile to watch the videos..

he just recently got endorsed by Takamine guitars, guy is a monster player. Also to point out, he uses a LOT of fucked up jazz chords and inversions, shit you would never normally see or use in guitar playing (well most sane people anyway)

There are others doing similar percussive things, it's nothing new, but his playing is definitely fun to listen to. Thanks man.
