« on: January 14, 2011, 01:03:08 PM »
Has anyone tried NOW brand's liver powder?

I'm curious about its taste and mixability.

Yeah, I've tried chewing tablets before, so I'd imagine the powder tastes analogous to that.
I like the results I see from the liver supplements I currently take, but I'm looking for ways to keep my intake up without all the fillers of the cake tablets.
A few companies manufacture a beef protien powder, but the ones I've seen contain collagen as the primary source, and that could be any number of things. :-X

NOW suggests mixing their powder with tomato or vegetable juice.
I'm wondering how it would taste if added to my current blend.

Tomato/veg juice = lots of sodium. Careful

Sounds disgusting, but ya do what ya gotta do  :-\

Caution:  Do Not Eat Freshness Packet Enclosed.  ::)

Don't you guys need to watch it when supplementing with iron?

Iron can be tough to absorb, like calcium and a lot of menstruating women are deficient.  I would think  that product is meant for a female.

Monty, do you give blood?  They would tell you if your iron levels were off.

Liver provides heme iron, B-12, folic acid, and a full spectrum of amino acids.
I believe they give me noticeably increased energy levels - likely from the B-12 - and I feel stronger during consistent use.
Liver is also supposedly good for tissue repair.
There’s a lot of literature on their vast array of benefits, although some articles almost make it sound as though they can cure cancer.

I feel better, in general, when taking them in substantial amounts.
I feel like I can train a bit longer and harder, but that could also be partly attributed to placebo effect and the fact that anyone’s conditioning will improve after several weeks of serious training, so of course they‘ll feel in better shape.

I worked my way up to taking 70 tablets per day of the 30-grain Universal Nutrition tabs.

I don’t give blood, but last summer I had a battery of tests done as part of a very comprehensive physical/medical exam for acceptance into my medical program.
Those tests included a plethora of blood work.

I can’t recall everything they tested for, or even if iron count would be noticed, but no one ever mentioned anything to me.
My PCP knows I use OTC training aides and always makes it a point of telling me how unnecessary/undesirable they are, so…

70 is probably on the excessive side, but I'd hazard to say that most people who've tried them and didn't derive any benefits were probably not taking enough, or didn't take them long enough.

IMO, it's beef.
Beef is anabolic.
Beef liver is even more nutrient dense and carries even more benefits.
The tablets are nice because the fat/cholesterol is removed, which makes them an ideal addition to just about any kind of diet.

I'd be interested in learning feedback from someone who adds them to his or her regimen (while keeping everything else the same).

I would start with the recommended dose on the label just to assess your body’s reaction.
Liver supps give many people bad gas & breath.
Surprisingly, while lots of things bloat me, liver isn’t one of them.

You could try them with food, then between meals.
Work your way up slowly, and give them a fair chance.

Beverly International supposedly makes an excellent tablet, but IMO, so does Universal, and the latter is about half the price.
Search some of the discount sites & compare prices.
I get mine for about $15.00/bottle of the 500ct.

That was spread throughout the day.
The most I would take at once was 30.
That was right before bed, and was all I took.

I always felt they were good for supporting hGH release at night since optimal pituitary secretion of that hormone occurs in an environment that is low in carbohydrates, low in fatty acids, and high in amino acids: EXACTLY what desiccated liver provides!
