By the looks of it I don't think there was ever any weather volitility a thousand years ago. It seems The Earth has always had 4 distinct seasons that begin and end at exactly the same moment, rain fall and snow fall at exactly the sames rates every single year, no droughts and the temperatures always fell within a given range. Apparently this was the way the Earths climate was up until about 20 years ago. Now everything is crazy and out of control and we are all going to die.
