Yes you can, use you hands to push on your legs to get the weight back up to rack. Then you can get out of the machine after hitting failure.

I saw this on craigslist and was reminded of this thread:

Universal Gym for Sale - $200 (Holbrook, NY)
Has stations for leg press, shoulder press, bench press, lat pull-down, lat pull-up, low cable pull, leg extension, leg curl, and sit-up bench.

Item is on wheels and stands roughly 8-feet tall. Local pick-up only. Would need truck with tail-gate lift or you would need to disassemble and remove.

Exactly...you use a spotter.  Try using one on your squats...or perhaps you should try doing something besides the crappy leg press.  There are plenty of those out there....so do something else...or find a new gym.  When was the last time you ever got close to failure on squats?  My guess is never.  Getting close to failure on leg press is no where close to doing so on squats.  HTH

nah screw all that

rather use universal gym legpress or something like it

all leg machines at 24 blow chunks and no failure

lame

sometime I wana train alone liek apollo creed  bitches

fuck I am sore 2nd day after  I fucked myself up on tues

going to failure impossible on sled

A sled isn't selectorized. You can go to failure on any leg press with a weight stack otherwise you wouldn't be able to get into the machine in the first place.

Maybe that's the reason my gym has a similar leg press machine. I dislike the fact that you need to start and end in a position with your knees bent plus that the machine changes it's platform angle during the motion. Those equipment designers don't realize that -so called- "innovation" doesn't lead to better stuff. The leg press is a good example of this.

We have a leg press at my gym that`s similar to this one.......a slide bolt allows the platform to seperate for one- legged leg presses.

Great machine, and the empty sled itself has to weigh at least 200 pounds or so.

I've never tried them but find them interesting. They probably result in less stress on the lower back. The disadvantage I see is the same as with the "modern" leg press machine; you start and end with your knees bent.

I think that they are a pretty damn good hip/ass exercise, since one is forced to use a wide stance while doing them, not to mention the fact that the weight is around the waist rather than across the shoulders, so therefore the stress is more directly applied to the hips.

I see no need to do them with a wide stance in case you do them with a cable attached to your belt. I think there's rather less stress on your core because there's less balancing work involved for your upper body.
Maybe another GB'er who did this exercise can confirm this?

Just a question tallgerman. Do you have hands and arms? If yes, then use them to press on your legs to get out of whatever leg press machine that you use. By da way... WEST>turd bird

On a 45 degree leg press yes, but not on a horizontal one because it's range is limited
