Brain Health: Another 'help' question from getbig
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:33:48 AM »
Given these supplements ...would ones would you use and/or add to for proper brain function?

Acetyl-A-Carnitine  (i take 1.5 grams daily..3 caps...found tonnes of positive research)
L-Tryosine ( i bought it...its sitting around...if i'm drinking redbull i might pop a few caps ie 1 gram along with but i think i shouldn't have bought it...no convincing research to be found)
DAME (dimethylaminoethanol) ...bought it months ago...took it for a few days...did not find any convincing research and its just sitting on a shelf

i use Omega 3s and CLAs also...

a few weeks ago i made a thread about how i had not been feeling 'smart', plus i felt overrun and asked if whether taking omega 3s/CLAs could possibly have such an effect...i had recently started taking them

turned out...i ws just a bit burned out and needed a short break...nothing to do with what i ws taking
however in response(to feeling low) i had gone  out and bought a bunch of stuff that is supposed to give one a "brain boost"....this thread is just a..."am i missing anything question" ...if someone suggests something i have not thought of...i'll probably go out and buy it.

this thread serves a purpose beyond entertainment...i'll go back to studying once this thread is done mommy....
hopefully it woulda been worth making it

gingko biloba.  When I managed a heath food store 15+ years ago the old folks swore by it.  I am getting to be one of them now, so just started trying it.  I believe it is an adaptagen so it will take a month or two to report anything

Meth and paint fumes seem to have made a new man out of the Falcon.

Make sure you balance the intake with rock salt and olive oil, though.

CLA is going to do zippo for ya - esp in the quantity you're taking.

Fish oil has all your bases covered (BP, brain, heart, etc.)

CLA = 1000 mgs daily...anymore and it upsets my stomach...

btw i found some interesting research about how uptake of Acetyl-L-Carnitine increases with sodium intake....

DHA is well known and scientifically proven to improve brain health.  It is so important that even baby formula is fortified with it - for the developing brain.

1)by my ability/inability to read and then be able to recall 800 page technical books week after week...22 and counting..
2)by my ability/inability to solve tough lab problems on the fly...

bottom line...i have great days....good days...ok days...and shitty days in my ability to do the above 2...i just need to have the great and good day strings more often...and lengthen them if possible..

ok

if you have some coherent way of measuring I would test each one by itself first

and see if you can measure any difference or feel anything

My current "smartest guy in the room" stack:

Carlson's Fish oil 2 tbs / day
GABA
Tyrosine
Ginko B
DMAE
5-HTP

Shitload of glutamine... helps regulates my blood sugar.

also noticed creatine helps for mental "stamina"...

I'm not sure how GABA is supposed to help with making someone smarter?  More relaxed and tired for sure......works great for me with that, but if I try to read after taking it I'm asleep in 30-40 minutes and wake up remembering none of it.  Maybe they are saying good for sleep so you're more refreshed at other times to learn???

Alex what is DMAE?
