Anne Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle, in "The Dark Knight Rises," Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.

Warner Bros. also announced that previously cast Tom Hardy will play the beefy villain Bane, best known for breaking Batman's back in the comics.

"I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies," director Christopher Nolan said in a statement.

Hathaway's casting ends months of speculation about who would win perhaps the most coveted female lead in Hollywood. It also ended rampant fan guesswork about who Christian Bale's caped crusader would face in the new film.

The announcement pairs one of Batman's oldest major foes -- Catwoman is also a frequent romantic interest -- with one of his newest. Bane debuted in 1993.

Catwoman previously appeared in 1966's "Batman," 1992's "Batman Returns" and 2004's ill-fated "Catwoman."

Bane previously appeared as a juiced-up, largely silent minion of Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy in 1997's "Batman and Robin."

"The Dark Knight Rises" is slated for release on July 20, 2012.

I didn't think they would go with Bane as I don't see how he really fits into the realistic Gotham that Nolan has created. Should be interesting. Hugo Strange would've been better, in my opinion.

Tom Hardy is fucking perfect.
Bane is suppose to be a calm calculated villian, not the stupid shit he was in the cartoons or the movie. He's suppose to be the only one who is truly set up to be smarter to him, and he broke batmans back, this is gonna kick ass ;)

And for the record I called for this months ago, it's the perfect character, a genius, with a drugs problem fits right in with the first two movies.

Or bring back Halle Berry, she did a great job in Catwoman (I thought it was a fun movie)

Funny guy bale or christopher, nolan wouldn't let her in even as a cameo. They've both made it very clear they won't touch the series if it turns into a comic book/camp.

Hattaway can do the role which is more than enough, Jolie again is a horrible character, she needs to be a believable office temp/geek bitch, only the cat side is a sex kitten.

Regardless of what you want it to be, she'll be nothing like your mother, Nolan has maid it clear he's playing up the geeky bitch side, just as he's playing up the Genius side, with hardy, Nolan is a smart guy, and don't fuck around.

Yeah and 21 year old Vanessa Hudgen would have made a great fit against a 36 year old Bale ::)
Scarlette not a good opposite to Bale.  Jolie and Beckensale would have been.

as has been pointed out its actually a good story and character.

bane is smart and strong. just has an addiction to the venom that makes him strong.

even his original intro story in batman where he broke bm's back would work out well for a film.

obviously he wont be the roided up idiot, they will probably just portray him as a guy with the freak strength of a crystal meth user, with a highly intelligent focussed mind - just like me.
