What is wrong with people?

'Circle lenses' threaten eye health, doctors say
Unsupervised use can affect corneas, eye oxygen levels
By Anne Stein, Special to Tribune Newspapers

Fans who want to imitate the freakishly big eyes sported by Lady Gaga in her music video "Bad Romance" can visit dozens of Web sites to order "circle lenses," and U.S. eye doctors aren't happy about that.

Often sold as one-size-fits-all, with no exam or prescription required, circle lenses are contacts with a tinted outer ring overlapping the white of the eye, making the iris, or colored part of the eye, appear bigger. They come in a variety of colors and usually cost $20 to $30 a pair.

Trendy with teen girls and women in their 20s, the lenses are also popular in Asia with those wanting to imitate the round, oversize eyes of Japanese anime characters.

Now they're hitting American shores, where over-the-counter sales of nonprescription cosmetic contact lenses are illegal.

Health concerns

"There are bound to be complications from the way they're being dispensed," says Dr. James J. Salz, clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southern California and spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

"Kids are going online and buying them like they're an earring or a nose ring. They're not being fit, and all eyes aren't the same shape; some have steeper curves of the cornea, and some eyes are larger or smaller."

The issue is that improperly fitting contacts can cause short- or long-term eye damage, ranging from allergic reactions to corneal ulcers or corneal scarring. "If they're not fit properly, they can induce sight-threatening complications, such as abnormal blood vessel growth in the cornea," explains Dr. Melanie Pickett, assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology at Indiana University's School of Medicine.

Problems are typically caused by the lens fitting too tightly, which can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the eye. If untreated, "the blood vessels can grow through the line of sight, causing permanent vision impairment," Pickett says.

What retailers say

Circle lens retailers argue otherwise. "In general, circle lenses do not need to be fitted by an eye doctor/optometrist as long as the customer (has obtained) their official prescription information from the eye doctor/optometrist during their recent eye check," says a spokesperson for AsianFashionCity.com, which sells circle lenses.

"With this recent official prescription information, they can use it to make a safe purchase at reputable online circle lens shops selling genuine brand circle lens, which are approved by at least one trusted health authority/ministry," the spokesperson said.

Bottom line

The reality is most sites don't require a prescription or offer a wide range of contact lens curvature sizes. In addition, online buyers aren't being instructed on care and use of lenses, increasing the chances of misuse and eye damage.

"Complications can happen quickly or over time, and the patient may not even know until the problem's occurred," Pickett says.

I have dark brown eyes.

I actually bought a pair of lilac/amethyst/purple coloured contact lenses in the late 1980s, Liz Taylor had lavender eyes?

I wore them 7 or 9 times, had had them specially made for me, paid $100 which was a lot of money in those days.

My excuse:  I was young and very silly.  I was working in fashion.

Never seen any of that but I know it's very popular.

I read the book before all the hype hit. It garnered fans because it mobilized a passionate wave of word of mouth recs. Usually a good sign of something new, unusual and good. I don't trust trends when the media serves them up to me but this was ground level so I checked it out. The crazy shit hit after.

Got it from the library and started it at 8pm. I kept reading. I couldn't put it down, I just had to know how it would finish. Then I checked the author blurb and had a shock when I read this paranormal story had been written by a mormon mum of three. She isn't the best writer but she captures that uncertainty and awkwardness of teenage years perfectly. I read the second one but haven't gone any further with the series. The interest has fizzled out. Seen the 1st movie and adore the scenery of Forks, sincerely. Hearing the dialogue coming out of actors is cringe worthy.

The hero in it is basically a vampire stalker and its OK :-X cos the heroine loves him and he'll never hurt her even though he tells her he wanted to kill her and he can't ever lose control around her. Them skittish vampires, I don't know.

Thats some scary shite for young girls to be exposed to.

The messages are dangerous.

He isn't human and I have noticed a strong trend in heroes that are human just not being good enough anymore in books and some tv. I don't watch much tv anymore because the crap they show annoys me.

Anyways it's hip to be a monster and it's not enough to be human anymore. Kids want an edge and these contacts fit the bill beautifully. For just 20-30 bucks you too can be a freak.

I see it as a combination of roleplaying with games online, tv shows that focus on the paranormal and anime.

And while adults are acting so selfishly around them and the world is such a scary place kids will seek escape in fantasy worlds, new creatures and superpowers. Yeah I know kids have always been doing that. This has affected grown women too. I dare you to google Twi moms. Grown women dafter over twilight than their kids.

I thought the ones Vin Diesal wore in Pitch Black were awesome. I'd buy a pair of those.

Sadly you will find that as you get older you'll need specs.  I gave up the contacts at 30 (like I'm able to get up in the morning, wash then slap plastic in my eye?  It hurt.

I gave up and wore groovy funny specs.  I still have all my old pairs, the NHS ones, John Lennon perfect round ones, the Annie Hall ones, the Christian Dior Pierre Cardin massive with a tint widow Jackie Onassis ones.  I have a Ralph Lauren square bookish frame in fake tortoisey orangey gold with a green lens Faye Dunaway in the Year of Living Dangerously pair.  I even had silver ones with mirrored lenses to wear when I was driving my boss's silver Jag.

I have white skiing ones that hook around the back of my ears in case I fall.

I looked clever and super secretary, kinda librarian.  I'd take off my polaroid black Audrey Hepburn type sunglasses and put on my Woody Allen nerd ones and people would say oh you really wear specs?
When Mel Gibson flirted with me in Toronto in the 1980s, I was wearing my RayBan Wayfarers, a la Tom Cruise, he said:  Did anyone ever tell you you look like my Buddy?

I wear 50's cat's eyes these days, I collect them.  My optician loves me, I do PR for him.

When you get to 30 or 40 or 50, 99pc of you will also need reading specs (mine were for driving, seeing the TV, I'm myopic... Nowadays they have laser surgery for that.

Just recently I've bought a pair of proper old reading specs, the ones that are half circle below and look great placed upon a book?  Thankfully I'm only 1.0 script.

I also have a magnifying glass for looking at my atlases and maps.  I don't need my glasses for the www, I can touch type
xL

the reason why China and Japan lost it in the 1700s was because they'd invented porcelain and made nice matching sets of plates but didn't evolve.  They just sat around admiring their tea cups.  Glass was made in Europe and people were then able to make specs, telescopes etc.

 i've always worn glasses.....

i take em off for the getbig pictures i post...only cause i always buy big bulky frames.....i happen to be clumsy and break them often...so bulky break proof frames make sence..which is what happened in the morning today..i managed to break em   ....  >:(

for once BGM made a thread that does not read anti straight..and a good one at that...

it simply comes down to a lack of self esteem. the more modifications you make to yourself from what you are without...the lower the self esteem. Although a certain amount of low self esteem can be healthy...none of us would make ANY progress in life if it wasn't so....

i sometimes wonder if homeless ugly people have the highest self esteem....i'm dead serious

if there r tonnes of slepping errors :D as i post this...i can barely see...as i said..i broke my glasses

so just squint ?

It's a proven fact that people who wear specs are cleverer, higher iq, it's true, we must try harder...

I'm not going to worry about it, I'll just keep buying new ones.  Never put them on your chair, Tox?  or even next to you in bed when you're really tired, you might roll over and crush them.  Be careful.

I have a neighbour who has a computer area which looks like the cockpit of Concorde, it's that massive (music and all that?)  He's hooked up hooks to hang his glasses on and it looks rather good, very insightful, I thought it was clever.  Far better than putting them on the keyboard and throwing them, along with the keyboard, at the wall.

I've just bought a rather nice spectacle chain, circa 1950s.  Like a necklace?  Can't get used to it.

I also often put them up on top of my head?

Toxi?  I'm blind in one eye but thankfully it moves around like the other one so noone can tell.  I would never tell anyone this, but it doesn't matter on the www.  I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other, my specs are for my good eye.  They did a massively horrid thing to Gordon Brown who was our past British Prime Minister because he'd lost his sight in one eye due to a rugby accident.  The macho guy on the driving TV show called him a one-eye?

I'm Miss four eyes...

I was born with a congenital cataract.  I was told it was due to my Mum having had Rubella (measles during early pregnancy (nowadays they'd abort, you could be Down's Syndrome...

They waited till I was 14 and the pupil had totally whitened, then they went in with laser surgery and took the lens out.  So all that means is that I can't see 3d.  I can drive.  No problem with a driving license, got one in Toronto NYC and Florida.  Can't drive in England though, it's the clutch and gears I can't work out...

I'd be far more upset if it was my skin or my hair or my teeth or my bum or my feet that were problematic.
