Mc, those are two very different locations. I've never been to Fort Myers but I do know LV as well as anyone on this board.
Here's some info for ya about Las Vegas:
Housing is cheap.
The economy is one of the worst in the US.
Gas prices right now start at $2.99.
Grocery store prices are good. ($2.29 for a gallon of milk. 99 cents to $1.29 for a dozen eggs)
Hotel rooms change daily but are damn cheap compared to other major cities.
Low apt rent starts around $550 - $600
Tons of vacant homes are available.
Job opportunities are not too good unless you specialize in what they are looking for. (Casino security always seems available if you can handle yourself and look good in a suit.)
Buffets are cheap if you get off the Strip and you can get a decent $6.99 Steak Special with all the trimmings at a local casino called Ellis Island.
Winters are cold but only last about 4 months or less.
Summers are very hot but it's a dry heat .... I have no idea what dry heat means.
Skiing is good on Mt Charleston about 40 minutes north.
Los Angeles is five hours west.
Entertainment in LV is abundant. Franky Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Debbie Rynolds, Connie Stevens, Santana, New Kids, Don Rickles, and tons of other old times appear every weekend starting at roughly $25 POP, but the bigger names start at $110 plus.
You can beat the slots if you know where to go and what machines to play.
Trips to Laughlin 90 miles south are fun and cheap with hotel rooms starting at $12 a night.
Pahump is on the other side of them thar western ridgelines and you can visit the Whore House Museum if so inclined. (A local lady has been doing here best to set a similar "house" up for the ladies.)
Death Valley is close enough for a one day visit .... but it's just more desert and dried up lakes.
Red Rock is a nice place to visit if you like Red Rocks and other rocky scenery.
Valley of Fire is also nice but they placed it too far out of town.... 90 miles north.
The casinos need you because sometimes they are completely empty. They even offer to give you free money if you come inside and a beer to two also.
Downtown you can get a shot of Tequila and a beer chaser for $2.50 but sometimes they raise it to $3.50 (Them bastids!)
Got a favorite national chain restaurant .... You'll find it here plus many others, but some are closing down due to lack of business
Need an education? UNLV is wide open for inquiring minds.
The economy may be depressed but still this town gets packed on weekends and holidays and the casino night club fill up with guys and gals super-dressed to impress and spend $40 to get inside and $14 for every cocktail they consume. Some even pay a few thousand dollars to have a private table stocked with various forms of liquor and all the essentials to swing the night away.
But the strangest thing I've ever seen in this town are the visitors who pay $300 plus for a poolside cabana to get out of the poolside sun.
Oh yea! I forgot to mention that you can play Craps and Blackjack while sitting in a very fancy swimming hole surrounded by 5,000 party fools and drink a few Cubra Libras or something stronger.
Get drunk, fall down, get wet ... No problem.
Where else can you do that?
You go to Florida to retire. You come to Las Vegas to raise hell .... at least on the weekends.
Any questions? Just ask.
