sprints are the single most hardcore workout a human can do

Sprints 2 days a week and a jog 2 days a week is what I've found best for fat loss and all around fitness

I jog, I guess you'd say. Once or twice a week in the snow.

They have this program for the iphone, RunKeeper. It uses GPS and ANT+ to track how far you've ran, and show your heart rate.

It's decent.

It also public embarrasses you into doing a better job by posting to facebook and twitter.

I run 2 miles as hard as possible Mon and Fri, run at least 5 miles on Wed. I run outdoor trails up into the mountain. Running hard uphill takes a special sickness.

For those of you who sprint, how do you set up your workouts?  How much do you do, how often, how intense, etc?

I haven't done any cardio in months, but these days my workouts suck so much I barely get any exercise at all.  I feel like I just sit around all day, so I may want to get back into cardio.

I remember back in the day I hated sprinting, cause I didn't do it frequently enough and would just go all out every time.  I think I need to hold back a little or I'll always end up overdoing it.

I use the mountainbike to go outside for fitness. All muscle and no endurance is stupid.

Well I know since everyone here is so interested in holding on to their 225lb sub 5% frame, they probably would not dream of jogging away precious muscle. But for those of you who can actual walk more than a block, what is your opinion of jogging a few times a week for cardio? Do you feel like it would burn muscle, or is bob chick treadmill walk more your speed?

I run 4 times a week. Most effective cardio there is imo. One of the reason it is so effective, is that it takes so little subjective effort in relation to energy expenditure.

I have also had no problem building strength and muscle while running. One caution: do not run if you are very heavy. Your knees and/or hips will not like it.

Quit trolling and go out and swim 5 miles.....prove something.

I gotta agree Show.

DJ181, about a month before my first marathon I was at my cousins wedding. The hotel I was staying at had a pool. At this point I was running 8-10 miles a day. Cripes after 5 laps in the pool I was like this shit is kicking my ass. Most triathlons, swimming is the shortest part

Running was the only thing that helped me lose weight when I hit a plateau.  It has been a couple years and I am fat again but will be hitting the park when the weather heats up.  For now I half ass it on the treadmill while watching the girls on the stairmasters.

which brings me to a question. Why do MOST gyms put the stairmasters in the front row and all other cardio equipment behind them.

It's idiotic to say swimming 5 miles is the same as running 5 miles. That's like saying running 5 miles is the same as biking 5 miles. The Gold Standard of aerobic power is Vo2 max, and elite runners pwn elite swimmers with Vo2 max ratings. But, the best to the best, Vo2 max wise is cross-country skiers.

then go swim 5 miles and prove us wrong.....funny how all of us who have actually done both....me and newmom and some others are saying the exact same thing.

I run 3 days a week.....I don't jog. I run 1.5 miles as fast as I can on the treadmill just to get that shit over with. I don't do it to lose fat, I just do it...no sure why though because I fucking despise it!!

That's a good plan splank, running just enough to get ya fit and keep bodyfat levels in check, while not running so much that it becomes catabolic. Also running, not jogging, is key. I think that one can run 20 miles max, weekly, before it becomes catabolic.

I had the same problem when I started, now I just staple it to my chest while I run, works great.

That is my thought behind it. I have to be very careful, I f I run to much, I drop weight way to fast. Like you said, I run just enough to feel I am somewhat fit. I run a few 5ks a year with the Mrs, but she runs relatively slow (9:30 miles) so it really isn't an issue. Back in the day, late 90s, I was running at least 4 miles a day 5 days a week....I dropped clear down to 175lbs....looked like I was a HIV victim. Never again!
