WHAT? No more Incandescent bulbs!!!
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:46:00 PM »
I just learned about this bullshit a few days ago and am pissed as hell.

I have tried all kinds of lights in my work area and the only ones that are up to snuff are good old fashion edison incandescent bulbs.

Several years ago I tried to be a good greenie and help the environment by buying these CFL bulbs but I had nothing but bad experiences including two of the bulbs exploding or rather making a loud fizzle sound followed by smoke and a stench so nasty I had to leave the room and open the windows for hours.  As I have just learned from both state and federal suggestions, it's a good thing I left the room when the bulb failed.  They are extremely toxic with murcury.  In no specific order to state/federal, they recommend getting the hell out of the room ASAP and even say to hazmat all fabric type materials in the area of the failed bulb.  They even say to cut out your carpet in the area of the failed or broken bulb...  HOLY SHIT....   Are you freaking kidding me?  All of America is going to be a hazarous danger zone by 2015 with all the broken bulbs and bulbs dumped in the trash and you know most people wont even know about this crap.  I also experienced headaches after long hours trying to work with these new bulbs.  Fuck that.

So that's right, I said fuck it and went down to home depot and completely bought them out of all the incandescent old fashion energy wasting bulbs I could buy.  I have pretty close to half a lifetime supply  or more and will be ordering more online in the next few days...  They have already closed the GE plants in America killing all the jobs so I'm guessing these bulbs will be well off the shelves in the next few months....  If you need them, stalk up now... they're gone soon....

Quote
Planned Obsolescence is the deliberate shortening of product life spans to guarantee consumer demand. As a magazine for advertisers succinctly puts it: “The article that refuses to wear out is a tragedy of business “ - and a tragedy for the modern growth society which relies on an ever-accelerating cycle of production, consumption and throwing away.

THE LIGHT BULB CONSPIRACY combines investigative research and rare archive footage to trace the untold story of Planned Obsolescence, from its beginnings in the 1920s with a secret cartel, set up expressly to limit the life span of light bulbs, to present-day stories involving cutting edge electronics (such as the iPod) and the growing spirit of resistance amongst ordinary consumers.

This film travels to France, Germany, Spain and the US to find witnesses of a business practice which has become the basis of the modern economy, and brings back disquieting pictures from Africa where discarded electronics are piling up in huge cemeteries for electronic waste.

Economists and environmentalists believe that the growth society as we know it is unsustainable in the long run and that Planned Obsolescence needs to become a thing of the past, as it is impossible to combine the limitless consumption of resources with a finite planet. But what are the alternatives? The film offers thought-provoking analysis by thinkers wor¬king on ways of saving both the economy and the environment, and presents hands-on stories showing entrepreneurs putting new business models into practice.

hey, I admit for the last 5 years, the only thing I have heard from bachmann were the batshit one-liners.  until this year when the tea party took over, FOX didn't give her much airtime.  You know, she wasn't a RINO like they were pushing into office in 2008 ;)

i'm quickly becoming a fan of her, the more I learn about her.

Good post MB... I am familiar with this as most of us are by now.

Once I started researching this, I was actually shocked to learn that GE had actually lobbied for this goddamned bill...  You would think they would have been against it....  but noooooo......  GE wanted this crap to happen.  Now the bulbs that were made in American will be replaced by CFL's made in Mexico and China so at a much greater profit to companies like GE.

nice....

didn't GE get bailout money too?  I can't remember but I think they did... If so it appears they maneuvered in the following months to screw Americans and hook themselves up.

it really does illustrate how new outlets on BOTh sides of the aisle can make/break candidates.

MSN only puts her on TV to make all repubs look batshit crazy.
FOX leaves her off TV cause their tea party princess palin is on their payroll.

Palin start unraveling 5 minutes after bachmann goes on MSNBC and gives mathews a beatdown on his own show...

Suddenly she's the FOX sweetheart.

I have to say... giving her OWN speech opposite pauul Ryan kinda spits in the face of the party establishment.  Christie declined the speech. Ryan's a kid... he isn't 2012 heavy hitter, let's be honest.

IF IF IF she gives her own speech - and announces her 2012 intentions as I think she will - it'd be the perfect way to minimize ryan, smash obama, and introduce herself as the FIRST SERIOUS 2012 CONTENDER - and use obama's national audience to do it ;)

She could steal the show with this one...

I seached and the only person I could find here on getbig that talked about the incandescent ban was you.  You had posted several articles dealing with it but nobody seemed to give a shit.  I wish I had seen them when you posted them.

Yea, isn't it fucking amazing... This fucking company, GE, lobbies for this ban, gets whatever billion of American taxpayer bailout money.  Uses the money to shut out American workers in favor of Chinese/mex labor.... Brilliant....  Just fucking brilliant... creating new jobs with your taxpayer money.... oversees lol... nice.....

Thanks Obamabush, you two miserable fucktards....

This is OLD NEWS ALREADY...where have you all been? I heard about this during the summer of last year. In Europe a German guy is importing light bulbs from China since the EU banned incandescent bulbs. How is he able to do that you ask?...He has labeled the bulbs MINI HEATERS, since they actually use 95 percent of their energy creating heat. Under the new label the bulbs can be imported into Europe without being designated as illegal. Australia is similarly up in arms and I am sure they will come up with a way around their ban as well. Story Below

German "heatball" wheeze outwits EU light bulb ban

      Fri, Oct 1 2010

BERLIN | Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:51am EDT

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German entrepreneur is bypassing a European Union ban on light bulbs of more than 60 watts by marketing his own brand as mini heaters.

Siegfried Rotthaeuser and his brother-in-law have come up with a legal way of importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs -- by producing them in China, importing them as "small heating devices" and selling them as "heatballs."

To improve energy efficiency, the EU has banned the sale of bulbs of over 60 watts -- to the annoyance of the mechanical engineer from the western city of Essen.

Rotthaeuser studied EU legislation and realized that because the inefficient old bulbs produce more warmth than light -- he calculated heat makes up 95 percent of their output, and light just 5 percent -- they could be sold legally as heaters.

On their website (heatball.de/), the two engineers describe the heatballs as "action art" and as "resistance against legislation which is implemented without recourse to democratic and parliamentary processes."

Costing 1.69 euros each ($2.38), the heatballs are going down well -- the first batch of 4,000 sold out in three days.

Rotthaeuser has pledged to donate 30 cents of every heatball sold to saving the rainforest, which the 49-year-old sees as a better way of protecting the environment than investing in energy-saving lamps, which contain toxic mercury.

I just heard a news report the other day that found that well over half of the people in America had no idea of the ban on these bulbs.  They kind of snuck it up on us.  During the legislation, they were just talking about effeciency.  Had they worded it like things were going to be banned, there would have been some opposition.  Even my favorite alternative news sites didn't start talking about it until recently.  To top it off, they've already stopped making them and stores are already getting rid of them well ahead of the ban.  So they were kinda sneeky bastards on this.

Also, the heatball info in your article is bad.  The guy is soldout and his next shipment of bulbs have been zapped by customs, so they're not going to let him use any back doors around the ban.  Jeez dude, that's old news already :D

I hope everyone knows they're not going to save any money after this ban.  If the electric companies are selling a lot less electricity after the ban, don't think for a second they won't hike the rates to adjust--they will.  You'll be paying the same per month and stuck buying expensive bulbs that suck and are dangerous.
