This physique to me is still the best ever.  If bodybuilding still looked like this today, there would be so much more interest from the public.

Hardly!!! Remember that, at the Olympia, only the winner got paid. Arnold got $1000 for his efforts.

The public didn't care for Arnold's physique, then. And they wouldn't care for it now. Case in point, a few years ago, I bought an issue of IronMan off the rack. It was the birthday issue they always do for Arnold in August. The cashier took one look at the cover and gave her unsoliticed opinion, "That's nasty!!" This was Arnold, looking about how he looked in 1975. This wasn't Jay Cutler or Ronnie Coleman. It was Arnold (in color, no less).

Bodybuilding is not for everyone. One man's pleasure is another man's garbage. The cashier at the counter was only one of many (probably a fat whale herself). Look how many people follow bbdg and how many hot broads / groupies are at the shows / expos.

Actually, she was fairly pretty. My point, of course, is that the claims of physiques like Arnold being more acceptable to the mainstream are dubious, to say the least.

I used to ask myself why don't these fitness products get Mr. Olympia to endorse their wares, if they're so great. Well, the folks who made the "TorsoTrak" actually did.

Of course, that Mr. Olympa was Frank Zane, the smallest of all the Olympia winners (and of course, it's 20+ years after he retired). The commercial introduced him as "3-time MR. UNIVERSE, Frank Zane". The pic has Zane in (or near his prime), with his Mr. Universe titles in large print and his Mr. Olympia title in much smaller print.

Exactly. Competitive bodybuilding will never be popular with the general public.

Check out the Markus Ruhl dvd when he goes shopping for groceries. Look at the facial reactions of the people in the background. Bbdg is the type of thing that only some can buzz out on.

I was referring to the porno accusations. The way MuscleMag was back in the late 90s/early 2000s, your aunt may have been justified in her anger, had she seen you reading one of those issues.

How many of the "general public" starting lifting because of Arnold?  How many on THIS BOARD started lifting because of Arnold?

Now ask yourself...how many started lifting because of jay gutler?

It's not about being accepted by EVERYONE.

It would be more "popular" and draw more attention when compared to the current crop of mutants we have competing.  This does not mean it would be as popular as football, etc....its a 'relative' comparison....we are comparing Arnold to todays competitors and saying the sport would draw more attention if it was still guys like arnold competing.

It's not a hard concept......

I think Arnold's popularity was because he was Arnold.  In other words, if Cutler had a more streamlined physique, it wouldn't make a difference.

People who say bodybuilders are "gross" are jealous and wish they looked as strong/lean or  wished their man was.

I agree.  If '70s bodybuilding was so popular with the public, why weren't all the guys as popular as Arnold?
