WASHINGTON – An orbiting NASA telescope is finding whole new worlds of possibilities in the search for alien life, spotting more than 50 potential planets that appear to be in the habitable zone.

In just a year of peering out at a small slice of the galaxy, the Kepler telescope has discovered 1,235 possible planets outside our solar system. Amazingly, 54 of them are seemingly in the zone that could be hospitable to life — that is, not too hot or too cold, Kepler chief scientist William Borucki said.

Until now, only two planets outside our solar system were even thought to be in the "Goldilocks zone." And both those discoveries are highly disputed.

Fifty-four possibilities is "an enormous amount, an inconceivable amount," Borucki said. "It's amazing to see this huge number because up to now, we've had zero."

Not really. They were known to be there, before all we could see was super giants. The odds of there being loads of super giants and not a equal number of small or dwarf planets was a fool`s bet.

Still cool as fuck though, must people aren`t even aware that we now have about 30-200 planets in our solar system(including dwarf planets like pluto)

the problem with simpletons like yourself is that you fail to recognise that this isnt a statistical probability based on habitable zones alone. the other dimension is time.

so not only does life have to find a habitable zone, it also has to have had a load of other situations occur to it, AND- this is the biggie- life has to be there when we look. Since we look at the minutest piece of the timescale, the probability of finding life when we look is virtually zero.
the drake equation is still the best way to go and it shows that finding life- intelligent life- is still almost nothing.

the best way to describe it is with the paradigm that when something is infinitely large, it is at the same time, infinitely small. that is what our universe is, to us, until proven otherwise.
