Ghost bikes

Ghost bikes are memorials for cyclists who are killed or injured in accidents. A bicycle is painted white and locked up near the crash site, and a small plaque with the person's name is placed next to the bike.

According to wildlife experts the odds against a pure white squirrel being born are one in 100,000.
With a squirrel population of over 2.5 million in the UK, in theory this would mean that there are only 25 white ones out there at any one time.

I've never seen that before.  Interesting.  I live in an area where biking is quite prevalent but also very dangerous due to the narrow, hilly and windy roads, little to no shoulders and sun glare.  Lots of small memorials with flowers and wooden crosses.

Do you cycle?

If so, you must take care.  You must ride as if you are a car and own the road, you belong (but not at intersections, give way there and clock all the drivers in Mercedes who are turning left without indicating.  Trucks (lorries here), too.  Don't undertake, never go in the slow lane of a bus or lorry, just overtake.  Cycling down the middle of the road overtaking Buses and Taxis and everyone is the most exhilarating feeling... Most accidents are sad cyclists coming up near the pavement thinking that's a great place to be.  Give the pavement (sidewalk) a wide berth.  There are bumpy drains and potholes there.

Cycle with at least 3 foot (a meter?)  between you and anything, especially a parked car door.  (the other 50% of accidents other than trucks taking you out on a corner is car doors opening.  So act like you're a big shiny car, indicate, slow down, show respect to others on the road and you'll get there faster

if you're not killed.

It's getting more dangerous every day...

I have debatable issues with helmets.  I think I go faster with one on.  Yet someone in Canada once told me he'd rather be dead than a vegetable...

I've got great pix of mad albino veg if you want them !

Ah yes, the happenings in Bumf***.  In SoCal, biking is also a pursuit, mostly on the weekends. The riding of 2 or 3 of then  side by side on busy roads, all the while chatting away, never seems to bother them. The occasional drifting into the path of cars either. If one happens to get killed by their own carelessness, than a makeshift sign is put up saying, "Got YA".

Have a lady friend in the insurance racket. Quite a few injuries and accidents, to cars & drivers, are directly caused by bikes (and biking clubs) all the time. And not always on narrow, rural roads. A newer thing with them now are cell phones. Trying to give them  space is not always the easy thing to do. Like the old saying, "Give them an inch, they take a mile".

no we are wrong and I'm sorry.  Cyclists must go in single file in traffic and keep both hands on the handlebars unless braking or indicating.  If you see 3 taking up the whole road, if it's a slow road, beep first then if they don't get outta the way, mow them down.  I'm a driver too.

want these pix of white squashes?  How about albino carrots?   I've posted a nice pic of a cucumber on the Girly Board under Valentine's Day gifts...

I was talking about commuting in rush hour in one of the biggest cities in the world?

You were talking about those guys you see in the country on sideroads or tourist paths with shaved calves and £500 of logoed lycra and a £1,000 Italian racing bike out creating havoc, pretending they can brake and hold it and balance on one wheel whilst looking over their shoulder at you?  I've never understood any of them.

I've worked at a Bicycle company and I've watched the Tour de France most years (love crashes)

and that lot have thighs and bums and lungs.

i've yet to understand the weekend bicyclerinlycra, they irk me too.

I do adore the bikemessengers.  Pwwwaaooor.
They're hot, fast and dangerous. They're called organ donors here.

Clearly sunglasses are in order and dumbell laterals for the shoulders.

Here’s a tip: bike trails have statistically fewer cars on them than roadways.

Ever think about that?

i always think its odd the cyclist only say how many of them were killed by cars every year....and never say how many times it was solely the cyclist fault, and how many mototrist death were caused by the cyclist in the process..

It really shows their mentality and illustrates just how clueless they really are.

I'm going to start driving my truck on bike trails.
I'm sure the cyclists won't mind, as they seemingly have no concept of rules.

I see asshole bikers alternate between riding on the road, the shoulder, and the sidewalk.
On two-lane roads, they'll ride between cars.
Most of them fail to obey traffic lights/signs.

It's really the shits when you get stuck behind a PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION BUS that's stuck behind a stupid-ass bicycle during rush hour in town.
