Can I pick a city in the US?
Because I truly loved NYC.
I moved there from Toronto to join a fashion designer (gay) longtime friend of mine who'd just married a multimillionaire Jewess Princess? We had a showroom on 5th Avenue (Karl Lagerfeld was on the floor below and Ralphy Lauren a few floors above. Zandra Rhodes too, I used to see her whilst fetching in the coffee shop around the corner. We had a workshop on 8th Ave. We made lots of money and Gerald spent it on cocaine and "Art". I worked as a fitting model, secretary, shipper... We did well, I lived to see our dress in the window of Bergdorf's next to the Plaza Hotel. I stayed in NYC 9 months, didn't have a green card. I loved it.
I was staying at the Chelsea Hotel, never made enough money to get past weekly rent, never had an apartment there. Our investor owned the bank and pulled out on April 1st, we were a tax write-off. I could've stayed, a gay guy offered to marry me (I've got Brit and Canadian Citizenship), but I said no, in those days I was young and thought I'd wait till I got married for love. So I left and moved to London.
I've only been back once since (1999 on my way to Vcr for the millenium, I was going back in time to end of the world). I've not seen NYC without the twin towers.
That changed my life.
I'd like to re-visit NYC as a grown-up. I could swap my flat in London for 3 weeks or a month, that's my plan...
Magic? Invest in property. Or sleeping bags and tents? "Now is the winter of discount tents". Have you got any money to start with? You'll need to earn the airfare to get anywhere. I used to get an agency temp typing job for two weeks, the first week's pay went on the airfare and the 2nd on spending money.
And I'd just take off.
