I got a job!

WOW...It took a year but oh well.  It's my first upper management job and I'll have my own store.  Won't say what it is for obvious reasons.

Listen up black fellas.  When you're an uncle tom like me and marry white, talk white, act white, and think white, good things happen. :D ;D

I go in tomorrow to negotiate salary.  Any tips ladies and fellas? I'm not really good at this being a career military man.

Congrats

If you have never  been in a managing position before you have a steep learning curve, its very very complex especially when yoiu have
manager people and tickle the best out of them.

Just remember:

You don't want to control you want to lead.
Lead with excample
Admit your wrongdoings
SHOW HONEST AND GOOD GRATITUDE - Make a point of saying thank you if you mean it.
Don't be a though guy
Be honest and I guarantee you it will be respected
Don't shy away from giving people bad news it depends on how you deliver news.
Learn to listen and I mean really listen to people

And the most important one (at least for me)

Always always always... when you make a decission, do these things...

1) Put the breaks on
2) Think about it
3) Think some more about it
4) Than make your decisions

Wiggs, congrats and in all seriousness, I was in a similar situation.  My advice is to KNOW going in that the people who work for you will not behave like your subordinates did in the military.  I know you will probably think "I know that" but I bet at some point, this post will cross your mind.  Some of the things "adults" do in the workplace is flat out crazy....and often your hands will feel tied.   Good luck !

Sales/retail.
I have traditionally been an HR Manager which is usually outside the regular chain of command.  So while I have managed, it's always been as an HR guy.  My last job being the Director of Human Resources.

I think to be a good manager in sales especially in areas where you are expected to make lots of individual sales with add ons you need to understand what the sales ppl are dealing with.

its ok to remind them that they are there to sale but in a way that shows youre there for them if they need your help with training and questions. Dont just tell someone they need to get their numbers up, ask if there is anything they need help with or if they specifically struggling in an area that you could help them with.

get ready to role play your ass off...thats the best way to practice sales imho
