Obama threatens to veto House GOP spending measure
By Sam Youngman and Michael O'Brien - 02/15/11 04:08 PM ET

The Obama administration on Tuesday threatened to veto the House GOP's measure funding the federal government.

In a statement of administration policy, the Office of Management and Budget said cuts included in the Republican continuing resolution would hamstring the U.S. economy and compromise national security.

"If the president is presented with a bill that undermines critical priorities or national security through funding levels or restrictions, contains earmarks or curtails the drivers of long-term economic growth and job creation while continuing to burden future generations with deficits, the president will veto the bill," the statement said.

The White House said the cuts in the GOP plan "will undermine our ability to out-educate, out-build, and out-innovate the rest of the world."

The statement said the GOP proposal goes too far and "proposes cuts that would sharply undermine core government functions and investments key to economic growth and job creation, and would reduce funding for the Department of Defense to a level that would leave the department without the resources and flexibility needed to meet vital military requirements."

The House GOP measure would cut this year's spending by $61 billion, though conservative Republicans want to make further cuts.

Obama, at a press conference Tuesday, said lawmakers should refrain from threatening a government shutdown, and the statement hinted that Obama is still hopeful that can be avoided.

"The administration looks forward to working with the Congress to refine the legislation to allow critical government functions to operate without interruption for the remainder of the fiscal year underway," the statement said.

The administration's veto threat comes as the Republican House begins debate on the continuing resolution this afternoon. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has pledged an "open" debate, meaning that lawmakers could add any range of amendment to the legislation, cutting spending even further.

The statement sets up the possibility for a showdown between the administration and Democrats in the Senate with the GOP-held House over the measure. Funding for the government's day-to-day operations runs out on March 4, and without some sort of short-term fix, the federal government would risk shutting down. The chairman of the House Budget Committee said Tuesday morning the government would pass a short-term CR rather than risking a shutdown.

So basically - Madoff-in-Chief wants no cuts at all and is perfectly happy with 1.5 TRILLION dollar deficits.

Even Palin will win in 2012 if you go down this crazy road.

Didn't he say he doesn't want to take a sledgehammer or machete or something like that to spending?

I've got a feeling he may be buckling down for a fight.  I was thinking after the election results that he might go a little more drastic.  Maybe not.

The Federal Deficit alone is $1.5 TRILLION

The GOP is triyng to cut $100 BILLION, which to me is nothing considering we are spending about $3.5 TRILLION.

If Obama is willing to shut down he govt over that, than he really is not serious at all on our debt or deficit.  I really don't see how anyone can remotely think Obama is serious about this anymore.

He is beyond delusional at this point and I wish some officers invokved the 25th Amend option at this point.

White House Proposes $556 Billion Highway Bill
National Journal ^ | 2/14/2011 | Fawn Johnson

The White House is proposing a whopping $556 billion for a new, six-year surface transportation funding bill that is almost three years overdue. It’s entirely possible that Republicans' total for transportation will be half that amount or less.

Both Republicans and the White House agree on one thing: The long-awaited measure to fund highways, railroads, and bridges should be fully paid for. How to actually come up with the cash, however, will be a matter of considerable debate over the next year. Fuel tax increases are off the table from Republicans’ perspective. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla., wants to comb through current funding programs for unspent funds—the equivalent of searching the sofa cushions for loose change. Mica also wants to leverage public-private partnerships to pay for highway maintenance. Even by the most generous estimates, it’s hard to imagine more than $150 billion coming from those sources.

The national highway funding system has been operating on temporary funding extensions since the last surface transportation measure expired in 2009. President Obama has made transportation investment a top priority for the coming year. He is renewing his request for $50 billion in the coming year “to spur job growth and allow states to initiate sound multiyear investments.” That proposal, issued last fall, fell flat in Congress.   The White House is also seeking $53 billion over six years for high-speed rail projects and is asking for $8 billion of that money in 2012. The likelihood of getting even a fraction of that sum is slim, considering that rail tops the list of programs that Republicans consider expendable. Still, Obama and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s commitment to high-speed rail demonstrates their willingness to plow forward in spite of the opposition. From the administration's perspective, investing in rail is about jobs and growth. As Vice President Joe Biden put it last week, “There are key places where we cannot afford to sacrifice as a nation, one of which is infrastructure.”

Obama also hasn’t given up on a broader plan for a national infrastructure bank that would be housed in the Transportation Department and dole out money for big projects that use multiple transportation modes and could take many years to complete. Those projects might lie fallow without federal expertise and resources to jump start them, according to DOT officials. Obama is seeking $30 billion over six years for the infrastructure bank.

Republicans should applaud one piece of the administration’s transportation budget proposal—consolidating 55 highway programs down to five. “This would give states and localities greater flexibility to direct resources to their highest priorities,” the budget said.

You would think they would take the fact that our debt now equals the size of our entire economy as a gigantic warning sign to stop spending. Silly me for expecting these people to have common sense. He's truly sending us down the exact same path as the Europeans, as many of them are floating debts in excess of 100% of GDP.

Its on purpose - he is trying to collapse the nation.  There is no other rational explanation at this point.
