You WILL get pwned at the stealership. Sell privately and always buy used, some peoples egos won`t let them do this but it is the most fiscally responsible way of dealing with money pits with tires.

I'm sure she wants a reliable vehicle for the safety of the baby :)  and new = not as many boogers and germs from other people wiped all over the place.

Do you have a relationship w/any salespeople at that dealership?  We usually say what we would like to pay (above or below) invoice (which is not the sticker price as I'm sure you know), to be fair (they need to make something) and depending on the price of the vehicle and how badly they want to sell.

In regard to our last cars purchased, we paid well above invoice, not sticker, for one, because they were in high demand and it was the best deal we found for that particular car ...and we paid $1000 below invoice, not sticker on the other one (there was also like $5000 cash back from the manufacturer [that is not discount but something back from the manufacturer] so ask abou that too) because gas was at about $4 per gallon and it's a large SUV and they just wanted to get rid of them.

Another thing to do is to go look at/drive it and see what they will sell it to you for about 1 week before the end of the month and if you are unhappy w/the deal walk out and they will probably call you right at the end of the month to get you back in and sweeten the deal.

hmm, these are all great points.

i'm also gonna bring the old man with, with his old world cheapness methods.  he had the salesmen swearing at him in russian at the last place, pretty sure they mentioned something about fucking his mother, lol.

but he got a good deal.

Shop for the car the day AFTER a big sale. They are tired and put up less resistance to price questions. After they give their price... sit quietly and stare at them. Do NOT speak first. They will say well I could probably sell it for (lowered price). Nonchalantly say is that your best? Let them come back with a still lower price? Repeat the quiet unexcited stare. Let them come back lower. Say... is that your VERY best? Let them come back again. Repeat the quite stare. They may come back lower or they may have reached their low. Decide if that is what you're willing to pay.
and keep moving!

Some other suggestions:

- Don't act like you love the car (this goes for your wife as well)...act like you can take it or leave it...as though it is merely a means of transport.  Maybe you are between this car and another or even 2 others at other dealerships...whomever will give you the best price will get your business.

- Do a little research before to see if there is money back from the manufacturer or any rebates on the vehicle.  See if they tell you about it first before mentioning it...(especially the money back from the manufacturer) this can also be an indicator of how honest they will be during the negotiation/transaction.

- If you can, find out if there is a spiff on the car.  This is an incentive given by the dealership to the salesperson to sell a particular car (maybe one that has been on the lot a long time).  The salesperson and dealership may be more inclined to blow the car off the lot just to get rid of it.

- After doing your research and deciding what you'd be willing to pay, ask for that price to be "out the door."  This figure means you drive it off the lot for that amount...it includes, tax, title, license, destination fees, etc.   For instance, let's say the sticker price is $30,000.  If your research tells you that $500 over invoice is a fair price and you feel good about it, find out what that figure is (maybe it's like $27,700 or something) and say you'll do the deal for that figure "out the door."  They may or may not be able to or want to do this depending on the mark up or desire to sell, but it could be a starting point.

Things you probably know:

- Do NOT buy any after market "rustproofing" ::) package or whatever.  If the car is decent, you won't need that.

- Unless you plan to keep the car for many years after the manufacturer's warranty expires before trading, do NOT buy any extended warranty.  That is mainly something to buy if you are buying used.

Edmunds.com for true value of used or new cars/trucks, etc. Kelly Blue Book some what limited with the information found there. Car dealers really don't go by the Blue Book. They only tell the buying customers that.
