running for cardio, ways to reduce joint stress?
« on: February 16, 2011, 08:48:00 AM »
alright bros, I would like to get a little input from those of you who are into the whole running thing.  I am currently dieting and am about 4 weeks into it, I do cardio in the form of running on the treadmill 4x a week, about 25-30 minutes worth per session.  however when I am done, I am practically limping from the strain it puts on my knee and hip joints.  I feel like even at 30 I am a little young to be having all these aches and pains.

a couple ibuprofen has me feeling fine again, but I really only like to take that shit sparingly.  I know we have some cats that are seriously into running around here, so for these bros... what do you do to minimize wear and tear on the body and joints?  I take 4g a day of fish oil, but I am more curious about stretching techniques and maybe sneaker suggestions.  one last note I know some of you are into those shoes that look like foot gloves, but I can't bring myself to rock those, just not my style.

Sounds like your treadmill doesn't have a good cushioning system.

One thing to try is ICE on your knees after all runs.  I started doing it as the tail-end of my basketball days and it did wonders....

Walk at a brisk pace, once your heart rate is elevated you can last for an hour or an hour and half...plus less wear and tear...but other than that...hit the eliptical.

some good suggestions so far.

Do you take omega 3's?

yes, 4g a day

Walk at a brisk pace, once your heart rate is elevated you can last for an hour or an hour and half...plus less wear and tear...but other than that...hit the eliptical.

the reason I enjoy running is because I like pushing myself, and also the fact that I can expend way more calories in a shorter amount of time.  I really don't have time these days to be spending 1+ hrs doing the treadmill, and I am hitting the weights in the mornings as well... cardio at night.

this x 2.  So may lifelong runners that came to our store i converted to ellipticals and they thanked me after using them for awhile because their knees, ankles and hips felt so much better.

for whatever reason the elliptical tweaks my knees in a weird way, but as I said too, the briefer intense periods of running are much more suited to me... it's just wreaking havoc on my joints though.  I do like your ice suggestion and will give it a shot.

One other thing, might sound crazy, but do you have access to an inversion table?  They will do wonders for compressed joints, spine, etc...  We had one in the store and I used it on a regular basis.  Once you get used to the blood rush to the head, they are incredible.

Take a look at the soles of your running shoes. If you have more wear and tear on the outer part of the sole that means that you are a supinator and you need a shoe with more cushioning. And if there is more wear and tear on the inner part of the sole that means that you are a pronator and you need a running shoe with more stability.

thanks meso, I will have another look at the asics.  I went looking for running shoes before but they all looked so tacky I couldn't find any decent ones.  I am not a fashion aficionado, but that have to at least look acceptable.

Great suggestion that a lot of people overlook.

This is dead on. Find a brand that fits you well. It took me 5 years to figure out that the cheapest pair of reebok running shoes fits me better than a hundred dollar pair of asics or saucony's. Not only that but some people get beat up by treadmills. Try to run outside and see if that helps.

I like my trail running shoes, they seem to have thicker soles and more padding than a typical running shoe. New Balance 473.

If you go to a specialty shoe store, they can test you for which type you need.  Not even saying you have to actually buy from them.... ;)

I don't have access to one of these, however I have tried one years ago.  felt like my head was going to explode from the blood rush, pretty intense!
