From an email from Sports Illustrated...
is there any truth to this statement?

There is now 100% proof that Dan Lurie (not Joe Weider ) ran the first
IFBB show in America on Jan. 15, 1948 , at the Brooklyn Academy of
Music. The original program of the show was found and AAU Mr. America
Clancy Ross was the guest poser!

IFBB says whatever it wants to, no reason they have to be accurate.

He didn't exactly "found" the IFBB. According to an article at MuscleMemory, Lurie may have used the "IFBB" title for his Mr. New York a few months before the Weiders in 1948, probably just to piss them off. The 2 sides were always at war. The Weiders probably started promoting IFBB shows in Canada in '46.

While Dan Lurie may have thought of the name first, that's all it was, a name. Lurie wanted to make his contest sound official, so he came up with a name. Then the Weiders started using the name, but again, it was only a name. There was no organization until 1964 when it really became an international sports organization with a congress and a constitution.

whomever founded it was a retard; "bodybuilding" is one word and the name should therefore be "IFB."

Names change. It used to be bar-bell.

In regard to the IFBB and who began it, one of my members has the personal correspondence of some of the men involved, and he has been sharing segments to help shed light on this matter. We have not reached a conclusion, but it does not appear that Lurie began the IFBB anymore than, as he claimes, he won all the subdivisions in the AAU Mr. America contest.

I have no idea what Dan Lurie won or claims to have won, but you have to admit that for his day he was one thick guy.

I was very surprised to see how good he looked in those younger photo's of him. I guess when you see him at 45+ with those long thick, bushy sideburns and potbelly it is hard to picture him in shape.

The pic with him and Joe Weider is impressive also. Joe was in decent shape at one time too!

When Lurie checked my list of Mr. America competitors during the Mr. America in St. Louis, he told me it was correct regarding him- which I already knew based on contemporary account results.
Perhaps his memory, like mine, is slipping. I do not think he is trying to be deceptive, but the facts are the facts, so motive aside, I try to keep the record straight.
Lurie was thick, but certainly I would doubt that he could not bent press anything NEAR what he claimed, for example.

In that pic, #4, Dan has some serious chest seperation-alomst like Franco used to have-and he also has ab's, which is funny when you see him with the potbelly
