It will be nothing like the 1930's & 40's - the 'US' had a large economy based upon manufacturing at the time, & managed to work it's way out of the hole.
Your economy today is primarily, consumer based, so there is not even a close comparison, to the last great depression.

This has come about due to the 'sub-prime lending bubble' going POP!!

 You actually want what are called heirloom seeds, try to do some raised bed or bucket gardening to get the hang of it before they run out of food at the store.
