The IFBB missed their opportunity to include classic bodybuilding and went with men's figure instead. I think classic bodybuilding would have brought competitors out of the woodwork the way the 202 lb division has.

It's not the judges , they just judge what shows up on stage , it's the drugs the combos , the cocktails , the experiments , it allows guys to get much heavier albeit not better , if Rory was born in 1985 he'd probably fall into the trap of being bigger too

In one way you are right but if the judges penalize them with bad score the competitor will reevaluate their drug regime and will be forced to prioritaze line,separation, shape and simmetry over pure mass without the charateristic I just mentioned.And no way sameone like Rory would allowed himself to became an a shapeless, deformed, misshapen creature like the bodybuilder of today.Same for Zane and other great bodybuilder of the past who envision their body as form of art not to be corrupted to please a judge and win a plastic trophy.

That's what everyone thought was going to happen when Dexter won , set the trend and it hasn't changed $:-\$ I guess that's why people create these threads to remember a time when the physiques higher quality the irony is Rory couldn't even get his pro card speaks volumes quality competition back then

I use to watch the Nationals and the USA ( yes on TV on ESPN lol ) and the quality of competitors back then was insane , it's rare the winner in this day and age looks like he's ready to compete on the pro stage but this is the sport as of today

I do not think that the judges tried to change the trend when Dexter won but they only did not wanted to reward a Cutler out of shape for the second year in a row especially after everybody was questioning them regarding how Martinez was robbed a year before!
And you are right the quality of the competitor was insane at the time.Just look at the line up of 83 National:

as somone who actually goes to shows from time to time, u want the guys on stage to at least look bigger than the majority of the audience, i wouldnt pay money to watch a bunch of 220lbs works of art im afraid....

And the best part is I never bitched about there ever being to much steroids in bodybuilding , it's not the steroids that's ruining the quality of physiques and a lot of people look back not only to the Ironage of the sport to even the 90s and earl 00s as the best athletes have looked , and how the sport literally is getting worse not better
