ATF to Require Information on Frequent Gunbuyers in Border States
AP ^ | July 11, 2011

________________________ ________________________ ________________

WASHINGTON -- In an effort to stem the illicit flow of weapons into Mexico, the Justice Department announced Monday that all gun shops in four Southwest border states will be required to alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles.

The new policy comes amid criticism of a failed federal probe aimed at dismantling large-scale arms trafficking networks along the Arizona border with Mexico.

In the probe, called Operation Fast and Furious, several agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives say they were inexplicably ordered by superiors to stop tracking some small-time "straw" buyers who purchased large numbers of weapons apparently destined for drug cartels.

Under the new policy, federal firearms licensees in Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico must report purchases of two or more of some types of rifles by the same person in a five-day span. The requirement applies to purchases of semi-automatic rifles that have detachable magazines and a caliber of greater than .22.

ATF estimates it will generate 18,000 reports a year.

Deputy Attorney General James Cole said the new reporting measure will improve the ATF's ability to disrupt illegal weapons trafficking networks that funnel firearms to criminal organizations.

One of the critics of Operation Fast and Furious called the new policy "the height of hypocrisy."

“Arm The Mexican Drug Cartels With Thousands Of Guns - Leave The Border Completely Wide Open”
The American Dream ^ | 7-11-2011

“Let’s Arm The Mexican Drug Cartels With Thousands Of Guns And Continue To Leave The Border Completely Wide Open”

July 11, 2011

How in the world are Americans living in the southwest United States supposed to sleep peacefully at night when the U.S. government has given thousands of guns to Mexican drug cartels and continues to leave the border completely wide open? The brutality and viciousness of Mexican drug cartels is almost beyond description, and yet the U.S. government has armed them to the teeth and does next to nothing to stop their incursions into U.S. territory. "Project Gunrunner" was supposed to be a U.S. government initiative to fight the flow of guns into Mexico. Instead, it has now come out that ATF agents were ordered to facilitate the acquisition of thousands of U.S. guns by Mexican drug cartels and then halt surveillance on where those guns where going. One of these operations was known as "Fast and Furious" and the revelations that are now coming out have Congress in an uproar. If the full truth about what has been going on is revealed to the American people it is going to turn Washington D.C. upside down.

Right now, some of the most dangerous places to be on the face of the earth are along the U.S./Mexico border. The Mexican drug cartels are fighting a vicious war against each other and against the authorities.

Just this past week, there were 40 drug war deaths down in Mexico in just one 24 hour period. Over 35,000 people have been killed since the Mexican government declared war on the cartels back in 2006.

Every time one big cartel boss is brought down it just seems to cause the cartels to splinter and multiply. Each year the cartels seem to become better armed and more sophisticated.

Now it turns out that there was a very good reason why the cartels are armed so well.

The U.S. government has been supplying them with thousands of weapons.

The following is a brief excerpt from a CBS News report that discusses the fierce opposition that many ATF agents expressed to allowing thousands of guns to be given into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels....

On the phone, one Project Gunrunner source (who didn't want to be identified) told us just how many guns flooded the black market under ATF's watchful eye. "The numbers are over 2,500 on that case by the way. That's how many guns were sold - including some 50-calibers they let walk."

50-caliber weapons are fearsome. For months, ATF agents followed 50-caliber Barrett rifles and other guns believed headed for the Mexican border, but were ordered to let them go. One distraught agent was often overheard on ATF radios begging and pleading to be allowed to intercept transports. The answer: "Negative. Stand down."

CBS News has been told at least 11 ATF agents and senior managers voiced fierce opposition to the strategy. "It got ugly..." said one. There was "screaming and yelling" says another. A third warned: "this is crazy, somebody is gonna to get killed." Amazingly, according to Reuters, ATF agents were ordered not to track where the weapons ended up....

The agents complained they were ordered to break off surveillance of the firearms and instead follow the original gun purchaser rather than track where the weapons went. Does that make any sense at all?

Something really stinks about this whole thing, and the American people deserve the truth.

The Obama administration has been claiming that we need more restrictions on American gun owners because guns from the United States have been getting into Mexico.

During 2009 and 2010, 70 percent of the 30,000 guns that were recovered by authorities in Mexico were determined to have come from inside the United States.

Now we know why.

It was the Obama administration that was supplying large numbers of them to the drug cartels.

So what kind of guns are we talking about? A recent article posted on Natural News detailed some of the types of weapons that got into the hands of the drug cartels....

Among the firearms sold to the Mexican drug gangs were AK-47s, thousands of pistols and, remarkably, .50-caliber rifles which are typically used to disable vehicles or carry out sniper-based assassinations at extremely long ranges (up to two miles). The mainstream media is now reporting that these weapons are turning up in violent crimes being committed in Phoenix, Arizona. So now the Mexican drug cartels can shoot our cops (or any of us) from up to two miles away thanks to weapons that the federal government helped them acquire.

Kenneth E. Melson, the acting director of the ATF, has been taking most of the heat for all this so far.

But the truth is that this goes much higher than Melson. In fact, according to the Los Angeles Times, Melson is already pointing fingers at other agencies....

The embattled head of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has told congressional investigators that some Mexican drug cartel figures targeted by his agency in a gun-trafficking investigation were paid informants for the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration. So how deep will this rabbit hole go?

Will Congress have the guts to fully investigate this thing?

The reality is that is seems incredibly unlikely that Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano did not know anything about what was going on.

Could it be possible that even Barack Obama was aware of all of this?

Once upon a time, Obama administration officials were very proud of Project Gunrunner.

There was even 10 million taxpayer dollars for Project Gunrunner in the "Stimulus Bill" that was passed in 2009....

For an additional amount for 'State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance,' $40,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2014, for competitive grants to provide assistance and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall be transferred to 'Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses' for the ATF Project Gunrunner. Apparently, stimulating the drug war in Mexico was a high priority at the time.

Back in 2009, everyone at the Department of Justice seemed absolutely thrilled with Project Gunrunner.

Video of Deputy Attorney General David Ogden talking about Project Gunrunner on March 24, 2009 can be found right here.

On April 2, 2009 Attorney General Eric Holder gave a speech in which he discussed the expansion of "Project Gunrunner"....

"Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail." Did Eric Holder know the full extent of what was happening with Project Gunrunner at that time?

Perhaps someone should ask him.

There are also reports that people have been trying to alert federal authorities to all of this gun trafficking for years. The following is a brief excerpt from an article on www.salem-news.com....

As if the information isn't bad enough, one of our reporters who has spent the last three years working on the border, gathering information on the narco cartels, Robert 'Tosh' Plumlee; blew the whistle on the gun walking operation known as, Fast and Furious by filing numerous reports to federal agencies and local law enforcement in May 2009 about these guns walking across the border. The Salem-News article also claims that the cartels have huge stockpiles of mortars, RPGs and anti-aircraft guns down in Mexico....

Also, as revealed in our recent reports, there are major stores in Mexico of what Robert Plumlee refers to as, 'high impact weapons' which include anti-aircraft guns, rocket propelled grenade launchers and mortars. These weapons are of U.S. origin, they are ample and they include the latest and most deadly, the same high tech weaponry currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. While not fully tallied, there are reported sites where thousands and thousands of these weapons exist, along with 'knock-off' Mexican army uniforms Things have gotten crazy down in Mexico. Any American tourist that drives around in northern Mexico is literally risking his or her life. While we have our troops busy poking around in the caves of Iraq and Afghanistan, a major league threat is developing just south of our own border.

Normally the American public does not do much thinking about Mexico, but now this whole scandal threatens to bring a lot of unsavory truths to light.

Many in the Obama administration are freaking out about all of this and are in "cya" mode. All of the bigwigs want to cover their rear ends and make sure that they don't get tossed under the bus.

Mexican lawmakers are already threatening to ask for the extradition of any U.S. officials that were involved in authorizing the sale of guns to Mexican drug cartels.

Tensions between the U.S. and Mexico are rising. This will be an important development to watch.

One Mexican drug cartel leader is even admitting that many of the weapons being used by the cartels are being supplied by the U.S. government.

Just recently, Mexican federal police released an interview with Jesus Rejon Aguilar. He is reportedly a top honcho in Los Zetas, and he claims that "all the weapons are bought in the United States" and even more shockingly he says that the American government was directly involved in selling guns to the cartels....

"There were buyers for a time – because they weren’t our people, they were buyers on the other side – telling us that even the American government itself were selling them" You can view video of Aguilar making these statements right here.

So what has the Obama administration had to say about all of these new revelations?

So far they are being very quiet about the whole thing.

But what they are talking about is how we need to put more restrictions on American gun owners. In fact, the Obama administration is promising new gun legislation in the "near future".

Isn't that lovely?

The Obama administration loads the Mexican drug cartels with guns, leaves the border completely wide open and then talks about how we need to curtail the ability of American gun owners to defend themselves.

What in the world are they thinking?

Today, ordinary Americans are forced to endure a nightmare of "security" just to get on an airplane and yet our borders are left virtually undefended.

Day after day, thousands more drug cartel operatives, gang members and street criminals cross our border with Mexico and make a beeline for our cities.

The truth is that the U.S. government does not really care about national security and has not for a very long time.

If the Obama administration really cared about national security then they would secure the border.

We have helped South Korea totally secure their border with North Korea for decades. Nobody gets across that border without authorization.

But on the U.S. border with Mexico security is a joke. Millions of people have crossed it illegally and the federal government does not seem to care.

The feds love to talk about the danger of "terrorists" overseas, but if they really cared about terrorism they would secure the border.

Hezbollah has been very busy setting up operations all over Mexico, Central America and South America for the past 20 years. It is not a secret that Hezbollah is very involved in the drug trade and in trafficking illegal aliens.

Members of Hezbollah could be going back and forth across the U.S. border as you read this, but the federal government refuses to do anything about it.

But Hezbollah is just a small piece of the picture.

There are thousands of very dangerous people that go back and forth across the border on a continual basis and the federal government treats it like it is no big deal.

The entire region along the border is going downhill fast. The sad reality is that there are a number of open war zones along the U.S. border with Mexico.

For example, the city of Juarez, Mexico sits just across the U.S. border and it is considered to be one of the most dangerous cities on the entire planet. In fact, Juarez is now the murder capital of the western hemisphere.

But do most Americans know about this?

No, they are too busy listening to the mainstream media tell them all about Anthony Weiner and Casey Anthony.

Illegal immigrants continue to pour over the border at a staggering rate and a large percentage of them end up in gangs.

There are now over 1 million people involved in gangs inside the United States, and a rising percentage of those gangs are made up of illegal immigrants and are connected to the drug trade. According to federal statistics, gang members are responsible for up to 80% of the violent crimes committed in the United States each year.

In a previous article about illegal immigration, I talked about the infamous "18th Street Gang" which is terrorizing cities all over America. There are reports that the 18th Street Gang has thousands of members in the city of Los Angeles alone.

The following is what Wikipedia has to say about the 18th Street Gang....

A US Justice Department report from 2009 estimates that the 18th Street gang has a membership of some 30,000 to 50,000 with 80% of them being illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America and is active in 44 cities in 20 states. Its main source of income is street-level distribution of cocaine and marijuana and, to a lesser extent, heroin and methamphetamine. Gang members also commit assault, auto theft, carjacking, drive-by shootings, extortion, homicide, identification fraud, and robbery. Just think of how much violence could be stopped by keeping these criminals out of the country.

Yet our federal government does nothing.

But it isn't just gangs of young people that are the problem.

Some mainstream media outlets have been bold enough to report that Mexican drug cartels are openly conducting military operations inside the United States. Scouts for the cartels maintain strategic lookout bases in the hills of southern Arizona. The cartels very much try to avoid any confrontations with our border patrol or with our local police, but once they are approached they are not afraid to open fire.

In fact, it happens all the time. We just don't hear about it much on the news.

The handful of agents that we do have guarding the border are tremendously outgunned and outmanned.

One very frustrated border patrol agent told Fox News the following about what is going on in his area....

"To say that this area is out of control is an understatement." How can we allow this to go on?

What is happening on the border is a national embarrassment.

Another border patrol agent put it this way in an email to Fox News....

"Every night we’re getting beaten like a pinata at a birthday party by drug, alien smugglers." So what is the federal government doing about it?

They are doing next to nothing.

Well, they are putting up some warning signs.

In some parts of southern Arizona today, the federal government has actually put up signs that warn American citizens to keep away from the routes that the Mexican drug cartels use to bring in drugs.

We are supposed to be the most powerful nation on earth, and yet foreign drug cartels dominate our border areas.

At this point, the Mexican drug cartels are deeply entrenched in all of the states along the border. In fact, the reality is that the entire southwest United States has been fundamentally transformed over the past several decades.

Until the federal government secures our borders, it should not ask the American people to make one more sacrifice in the name of "national security".

Our nation is under attack every single day by these Mexican drug cartels. It was elements within our own government that provided them with thousands of weapons. Hopefully Congress will be courageous enough to launch a full investigation.

As long as Grassley is willing to carry the water then their "better late than never" policy change won't mean shit.

Holder's head needs to roll for this. They just need to be diligent. Obama's protection of this thug better be a GOP talking point during the debates.

Because the MSM stopped doing their job years ago.

What is "their job"?

They are businesses that sell advertising for money, right?  They're essentially "infotainment".  Every single one of them.

So yes, if their audience reviews show they sell more ad revenue to younger people who enjoy more liberal news, then yes, more of them are going to focus upon stories that appeal to  liberal voters.  let's face it, the 35-year old single female college grad liberal spends a lot more $ each week on thing they see on commericals than the average 72-year old male conseravtive viewer.

Again, waht is the job of the media?

A JOURNALIST's job used to be keep our politicians in check by asking the questions that should be asked, not sucking Obama's dick like you do every day on here. I agree maybe now it's infotainment..... I'm sure of it.

You can watch any of the networks.  None just tell the facts.  They all show their "side" of it in the most flattering way.  FOX adds thousands to tea party crowds... MSNBC makes up racist things about ron paul.

It's INFOTAINMENT.  Period.  And the only reason it's primarily liberal, is because liberals spend more MONEY on the things being advertised on commercials.  FOX viewers are older and dont buy unripe bananas.  MSNBC viewers are younger and spend more $ on things like shampoo and mini-vans.

it's that simple.  Maybe you have some romantic vision of "back in the day....." but today is today, and every media outlet is nothing but a business there to make money.

Family of Murdered Border Patrol Agent Considering Suing Feds Over ‘Fast and Furious’
By William Lajeunesse

Published July 11, 2011

| FoxNews.com

The family of murdered Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry wants justice, and that may include suing the federal government.

“If the evidence shows Brian’s death was proximately caused by the negligence of the federal government, there may be a cause of action,” said Terry family attorney Paul Charlton.

Terry was killed in December 2010 at the hands of an illegal immigrant working for the Sinaloa Cartel while patrolling an area near Tucson known as Rio Rico.

Officials traced the gun found at the scene to Operation Fast and Furious, a weapons trafficking program run by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that let guns travel south of the border.

Generally speaking, government officials can’t be sued for damages, however misguided or incompetent. Yet, there are exceptions when agencies can reasonably foresee their actions will do harm.

While it’s too premature to know who likely would be fingered in a suit, it is possible that top ATF and Department of Justice officials could be the targets.

Defendants successfully sued the FBI three times when their informants committed murder. The U.S. government was made to pay millions of dollars to the victims families after it was found that federal agent created an unreasonable risk of harm to them by helping the informants avoid arrest. The IRS was also sued for close to $1 million when it failed to supervise one of their informants who also committed murder.

According to Charlton, the Terry family says it doesn’t want U.S. officials prosecuted criminally, but civil court is something else.

“Anyone who put these weapons in the killers’ hands may be liable,” he said.

Charlton was Arizona’s U.S. Attorney for 7 years. He understands the ATF and the internal chain of command on an operation the size of Fast and Furious.

“I have never seen an investigation in which guns were intentionally allowed to walk. That sort of thing does not happen, ought not to happen,” he said.

Charlton says a decision on future legal action will depend on the evidence. Congressman Darrell Issa, chair of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, initiated hearings on the Hill after learning the ATF helped sell thousands of guns to known criminals.

His hearings opened a floodgate of evidence against the agency, and provided a forum for whistleblower agents to air their concerns, which included multiple warnings to supervisors that the program was going to kill people.

Those warnings were ignored, despite reports showing Mexican police were recovering Fast and Furious guns at crime scenes throughout that country.

“Brian Terry’s loss was preventable,” said Issa. “It was regrettable and preventable.”

Fast and Furiously Stealing the Second Amendment
www.scottfactor.com ^ | 07/12/2011 | Gina Miller

Along with other rights, like our First Amendment-sworn right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion, our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is a right with which the communist elites in our out-of-control government are desperate to do away, and it looks like they have been going to outrageous lengths to create false excuses to do so.

By now, you have certainly heard about Project Gunrunner and the recently revealed Fast and Furious operation, a scandal that could eclipse even Watergate in the extent of the government cover-up, as fall-out from it continues to descend on the Obama administration.

AWR Hawkins reports at Breitbart’s Big Government website,

“News about Operation ‘Fast and Furious’ is now ubiquitous. Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson’s Fourth of July testimony to Senator Charles Grassley and Representative Darrell Issa blew the cover off what appears to be one of the biggest political cover-ups in the last 50 years.

In the middle of it is Attorney General Eric Holder, who now feigns a blissful ignorance about the whole mess: having nothing to say about its beginnings as Operation ‘Gunrunner’ or its latest incarnation as ‘Fast and Furious.’

For those who might not know, Operation ‘Gunrunner’ was the plan to sell guns to ‘straw purchasers’ with suspected ties to the Mexican cartel. Apparently, ATF was then banking on those purchasers to walk the guns across the border into Mexico. Operation ‘Fast and Furious’ was the plan to follow those guns until they were in cartel hands and then make apprehensions. (For the record, I concur with those who believe this was all an attempt to flood the border with weapons in order to create a degree of chaos sufficient to convince us of the supposed-need for more gun control in America.)

Anyway, the problem with Holder’s feigned ignorance is that he gave a speech in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on April 2, 2009, in which he boasted about Operation ‘Gunrunner’ and told Mexican authorities of everything he was doing to insure its success.

Holder told the audience:

'Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion.'

… But once the whole thing got crazy, and ‘Fast and Furious’ left Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry dead, Holder and others in the Justice Department went from boasting about such projects to pressuring people like Acting ATF Director Melson to keep their mouths shut.”

In a refreshing display of opposition to the typically thuggish tactics of this lawless Obama administration, Mr. Melson held firmly and refused to keep his mouth shut. He instead met with California Republican Congressman Darrell Issa and Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley in a closed-door meeting on July 4th. The meeting was quite revealing, and it led to a serious and disturbing spotlight being turned on the Obama Justice Department under Eric Holder.

Holder himself has been squirming and obfuscating to beat the band, as was seen in his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee in early May. Holder appears to be actively obstructing the official investigations into Operation Fast and Furious, and that is a crime. The day after the secret meeting between Mr. Melson and Sen. Grassley and Rep. Issa, the two men shot off a scathing letter to Eric Holder in which they laid on the line some of what Mr. Melson revealed to them in the meeting.

Among other things, they wrote,

“According to Mr. Melson, he and ATF's senior leadership team moved to reassign every manager involved in Fast and Furious, from the Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations down to the Group Supervisor, after learning the facts in those documents. Mr. Melson also said he was not allowed to communicate to Congress the reasons for the reassignments. He claimed that ATF's senior leadership would have preferred to be more cooperative with our inquiry much earlier in the process. However, he said that Justice Department officials directed them not to respond and took full control of replying to briefing and document requests from Congress. The result is that Congress only got the parts of the story that the Department wanted us to hear. If his account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand. That approach distorted the truth and obstructed our investigation. The Department's inability or unwillingness to be more forthcoming served to conceal critical information that we are now learning about the involvement of other agencies, including the DEA and the FBI.”

So, here we have Eric Holder fast and furiously attempting to hide pertinent (and possibly incriminating?) information from investigating officials. When will Holder be held accountable for his malfeasance in office? This man takes the cake, almost as much as Barack Obama does! How dare he obstruct a congressional investigation? How dare he lie about his knowledge of Project Gunrunner? Well, we know the answer to that. Being part of a dictatorial communist regime, Holder, like Obama, believes he is somehow above the law. One day he will discover that he is not.

There simply has to come a time when those in our government who still love our country and Constitution must grab hold of the courage to go after this lawless Obama regime, come hell or high water. The American people are sick to death of Obama and his minions getting away with all manner of unconstitutional and illegal behavior, as though they are untouchable. They must be stopped!

Even Florida Republican Congressman Colonel Allen West is calling for Eric Holder to be removed from the Justice Department. Quoting Col. West, Michael Carl reports at WorldNetDaily,

“‘This is just another sad chapter in the Eric Holder book of ineptness and incompetence,’ West said. ‘Eric Holder needs to be brought before an investigative committee and if those charges are warranted he needs to be held accountable.

‘At least the president needs to realize that Eric Holder needs to be removed from the Department of Justice … or else it appears President Obama is complicit and in approval of the actions of his attorney general,’ he said.”

Colonel West is much kinder to Holder than I would be in Col. West’s position. I would not attribute to “ineptness and incompetence” what can better be explained as deliberate sabotage and subjugation of our nation’s laws, Constitution, foundations and freedoms by this entire Obama administration, including Eric Holder.

It is virtually impossible that Eric Holder was unaware of the workings of the Fast and Furious operation, and it is also unlikely that Barack Obama knew nothing. This awful scandal most certainly could land at the very steps of the White House—if we were able to have an unhampered investigation—after all, Holder is Obama’s man. Why would an operation of this magnitude be kept secret from Obama? It probably was not kept secret.

As Aaron Klein wrote for WorldNetDaily,

“Project Gunrunner was first founded under President Bush as a bipartisan effort in 2005, when it had its inception as a pilot run by ATF in conjunction with the Justice Department and the FBI.

While the operation was run by a few dozen officers under Bush, it has since received an infusion of cash from the Obama administration, becoming a full-time project staffed by more than 200.

As WND reported, tucked away inside Obama's stimulus was $10 million in funding for the ATF's Project Gunrunner. This is in addition to $11 million already provided to the program under Obama, and another $12 million more requested by the White House for the end of this year.”

Oh, sure—Obama had no knowledge whatsoever of the evil dealings of his biggest law enforcement agencies in flooding Mexican drug cartels with weapons. It is apparent that the Obama administration’s Justice Department is in some very hot water. It remains to be seen if justice will be done to the Justice Department and Eric Holder.

Naturally, this whole ordeal has raised many questions about the real purpose of Fast and Furious under the Obama regime. Plenty of us on the Right see it as a horribly plain “false flag operation.” Let us examine what that means. According to one source, the Truth Move website, a false flag operation is,

“… a classic tool of deception and espionage. Intelligence agencies are usually linked to most false flag terrorism.

False flag terror by a state upon its own population can be a powerful tool of control. False flag operations can range from intentional provocation or ‘letting things happen,’ all the way up to outright orchestration.”

So, what if this is a false flag operation? Then, what is the point? The point is to create a false idea—with false statistics to back it up—that American guns are the “problem” and a large contributing factor to the animalistic violence near the Mexican border. The further purpose is to cause such violent chaos, which will spill over into the U.S.—as it has already—that American citizens and lawmakers will be duped and scared into believing that even more gun control legislation is necessary to curb the gun violence in Mexico and bleeding into America.

This is nothing more than yet another attempt by the communist Left to grab our guns. It is also one of the more despicable things I have ever seen from our government, and that’s saying a lot in light of the truly terrible things we have seen from Washington in recent years. The investigation into this matter could reveal that our own government and agencies conspired to use millions of taxpayer dollars to put guns in the hands of maniac drug gang members in Mexico, knowing full well that those guns would be used to kill Mexican and American citizens.

I hope this scandal will be the undoing of Obama. Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Obama’s Watergate
By Doug Hagmann  Monday, July 11, 2011

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/print-friendly/38374

Just after 10:00 a.m. on March 23rd, 1973, John Dean, White House counsel to former President Richard M. Nixon advised Nixon of “a cancer within-close to the presidency, that’s growing. It’s growing daily.” Within the same breath, he advised Nixon that “people are going to start perjuring themselves very quickly that have not had to perjure themselves to protect other people and the like.” That cancer became known as “Watergate,” and eventually led to Nixon’s resignation.

Nearly forty years later, another “scandal,” exponentially larger than Watergate, has the potential to bring down the occupant of the oval office along with other high ranking officials. While no one was murdered as a result of Watergate, two law enforcement officers are dead because of the current “scandal” that is leading closer and closer to the highest levels of the Obama administration, including the Department of Justice and the U.S. State Department.

Obama’s “war on guns”

After taking office, Barack Hussein Obama began a coordinated effort with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to control the purchases and ownership of guns in the United States. To justify the implementation of tougher gun control laws and in a direct assault on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, this administration cited a statement made to Congress by William Hoover, Assistant Director for Field Operations for the BATFE on February 7, 2008. According to that report, 90 percent of the weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels were purchased from or originated from the U.S.

That stunning revelation empowered the Obama administration to solicit public support for banning so-called assault weapons in the U.S., and calling for tougher gun control laws. The problem, however, is that the 2008 statement is disingenuous at best.

First and perhaps most transparent, it has been noted that only 1 in 5 guns that have been recovered in Mexico actually underwent any form of tracing, leaving 80% untraced. Accordingly, the 90 percent figure is already factually inaccurate.

Secondly and perhaps the most scandalous of all is that all figures cited by this administration pertaining to weapons tracing include weapons sold to the Mexican military via U.S. arms-trading policies under programs such as Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) initiatives. The fact is that the bulk of the arms used by the Mexican drug cartels did not - and do not originate from gun shop sales in the U.S., but from U.S. government sponsored programs that sell weapons and ammunition to the Mexican military as well as other third-world nations.

Many of the weapons used in Mexico and counted in border violence statistics actually arrived in that area from Central American countries involved in U.S. government sanctioned programs administered by the Pentagon and with the knowledge and imprimatur of the U.S. State Department.

Interestingly, confirmation of the government’s programs and knowledge by government officials, particularly Hillary Clinton, was made public by the recent release of State Department cables published by Wikileaks. The cables prove that the U.S. State Department and Hillary Clinton knew the origins of the bulk of the weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels, although kept this information secret for the greater agenda of U.S. gun control.

Meanwhile, it appears that the Obama administration via Eric Holder, used various weapons tracking programs already implemented to inflate the statistics involving guns originating in the U.S. to advance even tougher gun control measures.

Research and investigation indicates that a series of programs implemented under the umbrella of a government sanctioned program known as “Project Gunrunner” were purposely exploited with the knowledge and consent of government officials at the highest of levels.

Project Gunrunner

Part of the Southwest Border Initiative (SBI), Project Gunrunner was an operation that was started under the Bush administration. Ostensibly, the program was established to conduct surveillance, identify and stop the flow of weapons from the U.S. into Mexico and eventually into the possession of drug cartels. The pilot project was initiated in Laredo, Texas, by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) in 2005.

In April of 2006, the program was expanded to a national level as a weapons interdiction program under the BATFE, formerly known as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).. Project Gunrunner also involved the use of an Internet based weapon tracking system known as eTrace, a program that would permit participating law enforcement agencies to track the origin of confiscated or questionable guns, through their serial numbers, to their point of origin.

On April 10, 2008, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey briefed the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations on the status of the project. At that time, Mukasey stated that the “ATF has approximately 148 special agents…and 56 industry operation investigators (IOI) responsible for conducting regulatory inspections.” Mukasey also stated that the ATF “is also expanding its presence at the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) which serves as the central repository and ``clearinghouse’’ for all weapons related intelligence collected and developed by ATF’s field personnel and attaches in Mexico as well as by all other Federal, State and local law enforcement entities involved in narcotics interdiction and investigation along the U.S./Mexico border.”

By 2009, Project Gunrunner resulted in approximately 650 criminal cases being filed against about 1400 defendants. These cases involved about 12,000 firearms.

It is relevant to point out here that “Project Gunwalker” is not the name of any ATF operation, but a satirical moniker attached to Project Gunrunner.

Operation Fast & Furious

Under the Obama administration, “Operation Fast and Furious” was launched in early 2009. Under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, The BATFE commissioned gun shops in the U.S. to sell weapons to known criminal suspects. Ostensibly, this operation was for interdiction purposes, but the agents involved were ordered not to interdict the weapons. What resulted was a mass amount of weapons that actually and genuinely originated in the U.S., with the knowledge and approval of the BATFE, being permitted to “walk” unmolested across the southern border (hence the satirical name “gunwalker”).

From early 2009 through December 2010, this process was repeated over and over in the southern U.S. despite the objections of numerous BATFE agents and gun shop owners. During this time, several agents began to notify congress and became “whistleblowers” about the stand-down orders.

On December 14, 2010, the inevitable happened. U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was gunned down in Rio Rico, Arizona by an AK-47 that was “walked” across the U.S. Mexican border with the knowledge and allowance of the BATFE.

In addition to Agent Terry, Immigration Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata was also killed in a separate incident by a weapon allowed to “walk” into Mexico from the U.S.

With the tragic death of agents Terry and Zapata, the blame began to shift to those knowledgeable about the operation, including the acting director of the BATFE Kenneth Melson.

Much bigger than being reported
Unfortunately, the arguably illegal and certainly ill advised methodology implemented by the BATFE is not limited to the Project Gunrunner offshoot of “Operation Fast & Furious.” Other similar operations, each with the apparent knowledge and approval of the U.S. Justice Department, began to spring up elsewhere. There was also Operation Castaway in Tampa, which mirrored the methods of lack of interdiction as Operation Fast & Furious.

According to several agents who are now ready to offer testimony, each operation where weapons were allowed to “walk” into Mexico from the U.S. was approved at the highest levels of the United States Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State. Some believe that operations of this magnitude could not have been possible without the knowledge and approval of Obama himself.

Almost 40 years after the biggest scandal to rock the nation, it is again time to ask the question to Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama under oath and in front of congress: What did you know and when did you know it?

NRA Will Sue Obama Administration Over New Gun-Control Measure
CNS News ^ | 7/12/11 | Susan Jones

The National Rifle Association plans to sue the Obama administration over its new gun-reporting requirement in four states bordering Mexico.

On Monday, the Justice Department said it would require firearms dealers in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas to report multiple sales of certain semi-automatic rifles to the same person within a five-day period. The goal is to stop the illegal flow of weapons to Mexican drug cartels, said Deputy Attorney General James Cole.

The new reporting requirement applies to semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines and calibers greater than .22. Such weapons, Cole said, "are highly sought after by dangerous drug trafficiking organizations and frequently recovered at violent crime scenes near the Southwest Border."

NRA Executive Director Chris Cox called the reporting requirement "a blatant effort by the Obama administration and ATF to divert focus of Congress and the general public from their gross incompetence in the Fast and Furious scandal."

As CNSNews.com has reported, a House committee is investigating the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for its botched gun-tracking operation in which the ATF -- evidently with the approval of Justice Department higher-ups -- allowed straw purchasers in the U.S. to send guns to Mexican criminals. Two of the guns sold as part of Operation Fast and Furious ended up at the Arizona crime scene where a U.S. Border Patrol agent was murdered in December.

Although ATF's goal was to track the guns, Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee, said tracking devices were put on guns in only two instances.

Most of the tracking involved "a few hours of following the first car," Issa told Fox News. "In one case, he said, the ATF did track the guns with a GPS device "quite a ways into Mexico, but of course, they didn't inform the Mexican officials, and they didn't have a team on the other side of the border" to follow the signal, which "simply disappeared."

The NRA said the Justice Department's "scheme" will "unjustly burden law-abiding retailers in border states." Cox said the move will not affect drug cartels -- which are not deterred by paperwork violations -- and it won't prevent violence along the border.

"ATF and the Administration lack the statutory authority to do this, and the NRA will file suit as soon as ATF sends the first demand letters," Cox said in a statement posted on the NRA's Web site.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) called the Justice Department's new reporting requirement "the height of hypocrisy," given that the administration "knowingly and intentionally allowed guns to be trafficked into Mexico."

"Limiting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens is not going to solve the problem," the Associated Press quoted Smith as saying.

Scandal Grows: FBI, DEA Involved With Operation Fast and Furious
Townhall.com ^ | July 6, 2011 | Katie Pavlich

Yesterday, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson answered questions from Rep. Darrell Issa and Senator Charles Grassley surrounding Operation Fast and Furious. Melson voluntarily participated in the interview and appeared with personal counsel, meaning although the Justice Department has prohibited Melson to testify before Congress on behalf of the DOJ about the scandal, he can in fact come forward with information as an individual informant outside of the DOJ and separate from DOJ interests.

In a letter sent to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa and Grassley expressed disappointment in the DOJ limiting and controlling Melson's communication and interaction with Congress surrounding the scandal but called the information Melson presented yesterday "extremely helpful," to the investigation.

Melson revealed the scope of Operation Fast and Furious reaches far beyond ATF and the Justice Department. He said the FBI, DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and other agencies were heavily involved.

We have very real indications from several sources that some of the gun trafficking "higher-ups" that the ATF sought to identify were already known to other agencies and may even have been paid as informants. The Acting Director said that ATF was kept in the dark about certain activities of other agencies, including DEA and FBI. Mr.Melson said that he learned from ATF agents in the field that information obtained by these agencies could have had a material impact on the Fast and Furious investigation as far back as late 2009 or early 2010. After learning about the possible role of DEA and FBI, he testified that he reported this information in April 2011 to the Acting Inspector General and directly to then-Acting Deputy Attorney General James Cole on June 16, 2011.

According to the letter, the Justice Department continues to obstruct the independent House Oversight Committee Investigation:

The evidence we have gathered raises the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities. While this is preliminary information, we must find out if there is any truth to it. According to Acting Director Melson, he became aware of this startling possibility only after the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and the indictments of the straw purchasers, which we now know were substantially delayed by the u.s. Attorney's Office and Main Justice.

It is one thing to argue that the ends justify the means in an attempt to defend a policy that puts building a big case ahead of stopping known criminals from getting guns. Yet it is a much more serious matter to conceal from Congress the possible involvement of other agencies in identifying and maybe even working with the same criminals that Operation Fast and Furious was trying to identify. If this information is accurate, then the whole misguided operation might have been cut short if not for catastrophic failures to share key information. If agencies within the same Department, co-located at the same facilities, had simply communicated with one another, then ATF might have known that gun trafficking "higher-ups" had been already identified. This raises new and serious questions about the role of DEA, FBI, the United States Attorney's Office in Arizona, and Main Justice in coordinating this effort.

We hope that the Department will take a much more candid and forthcoming approach in addressing these very serious matters with the Committees.    If other important fact witnesses like Mr. Melson have a desire to communicate directly with the Committees they should be informed that they are free to do so. They should also be notified that if they are represented by personal counsel, they may appear with personal counsel rather than with Department lawyers.
