Bench Press: 49 reps of 225
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:02:06 PM »
What percentage of pro BBers can do this?

Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea is unable to run or perform on-field drills due to arthroscopic knee surgery underwent in January.  So he had one, solitary focus entering the 2011 Scouting Combine:

Bench press 225 pounds as many times as possible.

Paea more than aced the test, breaking the Combine record with 49 reps of 225. The previous mark was shared by current Giants guard Mitch Petrus, and NFL washouts Leif Larsen and Mike Kudla.

Unlike Larsen and Kudla — who had 45 reps of 225 — Paea can play. He twice won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-10′s top defensive lineman, piling up 29.5 career tackles for loss and 14 sacks despite facing constant double teams.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is particularly high on Paea, projecting him as a potential late first-round pick even despite the knee surgery.

Said Mayock of Paea, “His strength in the weight room translates to the football field.”

Paea is a big kid, 6' 1, #300 or so. And his reps were a lot cleaner than many of these high rep videos you see. As to whether any BBer could do that now? It's always hard to figure high rep converted to 1 rep maxes after a certain point, but I figure most would need to be in the mid #500's- 600 for a single to have a chance at coming close.

Not fair to even go there with a comparison like that. Let him try it without being juiced to the gills.

You see. Standards = everything, even if you try to deny it when it helps you.

NFL standards are rather high compared to bodybuilding which 100% subjective. Not one of those reps performed by anyone in that video was a legit rep and were purely done as a circus trick.

How do you know? How does anyone know? I could say bodybuilders' standards are higher and you couldn't prove otherwise.

Actually yes I could prove it, I've been in and around bodybuilding for 35 years, I've been involved in and around high school, college and pro athletes for 16 years. What kind of proof would you like?

In the end all the proof a person can provide is that NFL has one judge sitting there and acting like he can tell what is going on. 1 judge is the same as 0 judges. Rules don't matter at that point. If you can't realise this then I can't help you any further.

This isn't fair on Nasser.  He does slow, full reps while the other guys do fast half reps or third reps.

I've seen that combine video about 20 times today and have came to the conclusion, that anyone who is blasting about the way Paea did his bench today is delusional. Those reps are as good as form as you're going to get. Tony, I don't what you're talking about but I saw very little compression.

Coach, are you backing out of our Excalibur contest?

BTW, we need to talk about our wage... I would like to stay at your PalmS condo/Townhouse for a week... play golf wearing tartan pants and walk around shaking ppl's hands and say "Hi I'm Joe from 105"

I put on the table, our timeshare in Cabo... or our place at bigbear...

Your thoughts...

We could one of two things, stay at my place in PS on the golf course with a lake and mountain view OR we could take my sail (36' Beneteau) to Cabo on your dime.
