Police Defy Order to Clear Protesters from Wisconsin Capital
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:31:03 PM »
I guess the ignorant cops can now see that these demonstrators are fighting not only for their rights but for the rights of every union which includes the police union as well. Shameful as it is..it had to come to this before the police finally grew some balls and decided to stand with the REAL AMERICANS.

Weekly Audit: Police Defy Order to Clear Protesters from Wisconsin Capital

Posted Mar 1, 2011 @ 12:14 pm by Lindsay Beyerstein

On Monday afternoon, the Capitol Police in Madison, Wisconsin refused to enforce an order to clear the Capitol building of hundreds of peaceful protesters who have been occupying the site to protest Governor Scott Walker’s plan to eliminate the collective bargaining rights of public employees.

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! interviews State Rep. Kelda Helen Roys (D), who spent Sunday night in the Capitol building with other protesters. Roys describes what happened at four o’clock on Monday afternoon when the government gave the order to clear the protesters from the building:

And after several hours of the same sorts of scenes that we’ve been seeing all week—singing, chanting, drumming, speechifying—the Capitol police captain, Chief Tubbs, made an announcement, and he said that the protesters that had remained in the building, they were being orderly and responsible and peaceful and there was no reason to eject them from the Capitol.

Police attempted to clear the building of protesters on Sunday night, but they relented when the protesters refused to leave and allowed them to stay another night. On Monday, the police decided not to eject protesters already inside, but no additional activists would be allowed in. The governor plans to deliver his budget address on Tuesday afternoon. Walker is expected to call for spending cuts that could exceed $1 billion dollars.

Gov. Walker has threatened mass public sector layoffs if the Democratic senators do not return from Illinois by March 1. However, the Uptake.com reports that one of the absent legislators, State Sen. Jon Erpenbach, claims Walker is not telling the truth. Erpenbach says the unions have already agreed to come up with the money the governor needs to balance the budget, and therefore, he has no need to lay anyone off to bridge the gap.

Wisconsin 101

Matthew Rothschild of The Progressive describes the epic scale of the Wisconsin protests:

This is the largest sustained rally for the rights of public sector workers that this country has seen in decades — perhaps ever.

The crowds at the state Capitol have swelled from 10,000-65,000 during the first week all the way up to 100,000 on Feb. 26. Hundreds of people occupied the Capitol building with a sit-in and sleep-in for days on end, and total strangers from around the world ordered pizzas for them.

In case you’re still wondering what all of this means, Andy Kroll, Nick Baumann, and Siddhartha Mahanta of Mother Jones have joined forces to bring you this “Wisconsin 101″ primer.

The Republicans in the Wisconsin House passed a bill that would take away collective bargaining rights for public sector unions, restrict their ability to collect dues, and force them to undergo yearly recertification votes. But the bill cannot become law until the state Senate also passes it. Currently, 14 Democratic state senators are hiding out in Illinois to deprive the Republican majority of the quorum they need to vote on the bill. However, as Kroll notes, if only one Democrat breaks faith and returns to Madison, the Republicans will be able to pass the bill.

Nationwide solidarity

Jamilah King of Colorlines.com brings us a photo essay on the solidarity rallies held around the country over the weekend in support of the Wisconsin protesters. From San Francisco to Salt Lake City to Atlanta to New York, people took to the streets in support of the right of workers to organize. Also at Colorlines.com, historian Michael Honey draws parallels between the situation in Wisconsin and Dr. Martin Luther King’s last crusade. Shortly before his assassination, King stood with the sanitation workers of Memphis to demand collective bargaining rights and the power to collect union dues.

George Warner of Campus Progress profiles some young activists who took to the streets of Washington, D.C. to express their solidarity with the Wisconsin protesters. About 1,500 people came out to a rally in support of the protesters on Saturday.

Anonymous strikes again

In a bizarre twist, a loosely organized coalition of anarchic hackers known as “Anonymous” attacked websites linked to Koch Industries on Sunday, Jessica Pieklo reports for Care2.com. The Koch brothers are among Gov. Walker’s most generous benefactors. The hackers launched a distributed denial of service attack on the website of the Koch-funded conservative group Americans for Prosperity.

In addition to generous campaign contributions, the Koch brothers gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association, which in turn paid for millions of dollars worth of ads against Walker’s opponent in 2010. Walker is evidently very grateful to Koch. Last week, a writer for a Buffalo-based website got Walker on the phone by pretending to be David Koch.

Don’t look now, but…

Meanwhile, in Indiana, the state assembly reconvened on Monday to find most of the 40 Democratic members had decamped for Illinois. The legislators are apparently taking a page from the Wisconsin playbook. Indiana’s Republican governor is trying to pass legislation that would make permanent a ban on collective bargaining by public sector workers and the Democratic legislators are seeking to deny him the 2/3rds quorum required to vote on the bill.

The Democrats left the state in protest to the Republicans desire to take away the RIGHTS of union employees. Also the state governor is more interested in selling the state's debt of 210 million dollars, which it was going to do through concession on the unions otherwise it would lay off public employees. The whole goal behind this smoke and mirrors game is UNION BUSTING, WORKERS RIGHTS BUSTING AND FINANCIAL THEFT.

Democrats leave Wisconsin to protest union curbs

MADISON, Wisconsin | Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:05pm EST

MADISON, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Wisconsin state Senate Democrats boycotting a vote on a plan to curb the union rights of public employees left the state on Thursday in an attempt to force majority Republicans to negotiate a compromise.

Democrat Sen. Jon Erpenbach told WisPolitics, an online news service, that he believed all 14 Senate Democrats were out of the state by early Thursday afternoon. There are 19 Senate Republicans, and a quorum of 20 is needed to vote on the issue.

Erpenbach would not disclose where he was or how many of the Democratic senators were with him.

"We were left with no choice," Erpenbach said. "The question is when are the Republicans going to sit down seriously with the other side on this issue and try to work something out," Erpenbach told WisPolitics.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker has proposed sharply curbing the bargaining rights of public unions in order to make immediate budget savings. The move sparked outrage among union workers who protested at the Wisconsin state house this week.

Capitol police estimated 25,000 people, many carrying signs protesting the Republican plan, converged on the state Capitol building on Thursday, including 5,000 packed inside the building. The protests, which began on Monday, have grown in numbers every day this week, police said.

The proposal was to be debated and possibly come to a vote in the state Senate on Thursday. Republicans also hold a majority in the state House of Representatives.

Walker issued a statement Thursday calling on Democratic legislators to return, saying their actions were "disrespectful."

"Out of respect for the institution of the Legislature and the democratic process, I am calling on Senate Democrats to show up to work today, debate legislation and cast their vote," Walker said.

Many schools throughout the state closed Thursday -- the second consecutive day in the capitol of Madison -- after the state's largest teachers' union called for members to come to Madison and join protests around and inside the state Capitol.

"This is not about protecting our pay and benefits. It is about our right to collectively bargain," teacher's union President Mary Bell said.

A component of Walker's plan that calls for a bond restructuring put the legislation on the fast track for approval. The governor wants the state to push principal payments on its general obligation bonds into future years to save $165 million.

Because those payments are due on March 15, the bill must be passed by February 25 to allow for time to sell the debt. The deal would involve about $210 million of bonds priced through lead underwriter Citigroup, according to Frank Hoadley, the state's capital finance director.

Senate Joint Finance Committee co-chair Alberta Darling, said the choice facing Wisconsin was either to get the concessions from unions, or lay off public employees.

"It's not like we're choosing to do this. We are broke," she said.

The battle over public employee unions is gaining national attention, with both liberal and conservative talk shows highlighting the issue and saying that this is a national fight over union rights and power.

Ed Schultz, a nationally-known liberal radio talk show host who also has a show on MSNBC cable television, aired his show from Madison on Thursday.

Fire the cops as well. I am sure the cops that were laid off in Camden, NJ would be willing to take those jobs.

They left, because they know THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE. Wasn't it Obama who said that "elections have consequences"?

Besides, the last time I checked, the PRIVATE-sector unions were unscathed. Their "rights" aren't going anywhere. The left keeps trying to muddy the issue, just as they do when talking about stem-cell research.

Bottom line: These Dems are gutless cowards, who don't like the rule of law and the election process, simply because the outcome ain't to their liking.

You have something backing this assertion up?

You don't seem to realize that the reason you have a middle class, workers rights, a livable wage and a job period is because of unions. Prior to unions, employers could fire you or deny you hire at will, could pay you whatever they wanted, not supply any benefits at all and making you work a seven day work week. The much lauded Henry Ford was one of the BIGGEST violators of employee rights and was one of the biggest MURDERERS of employees who walked off the job because of the violations, so why the hell is he recognized as a hero in the auto industry?...or are his violations of employees the reason for praise?

So before you continue thumbing your nose up at unions and/or their members...realize these people/organizations are making sure you don't end up at the mercy of these reprobate employers again...and as it stands that is exactly what it looks like america is trying to do: going back to a near slave system.

How do you bargain with something that doesn't belong to you, but came from someone who worked for it then paid taxes to the government?   Can I bargain with your money samson?  I promise I will be responsible and not put you in debt.  By your logic you should let me

What is so hard to understand about the difference between public and private sector unions?

It is your logic that is flawed Nitro/Berzerk... first off I am not sure what you are introducing into this discussion. The article I posted concerned the police defying order to disperse crowds in Wisconsin. You seem to be operating on 3s mentality that someone is getting something for free which is anything but the case in this case. These people have paid their taxes, their union dues, their insurance, paid into their pensions, 401Ks, 403Bs, Social Security etc etc etc and now that it is time to PAYUP all of a sudden there are excuses upon excuses not to do so by the states. Someone mentioned cutting the cops...something I agree whole heartedly with simply because there are way too many cops on payrolls where they do NOT contribute to anything and have ENORMOUS cost overruns. You as citizens are already being screwed out of your Social Security that you PAID into, you have already been robbed of your investments thanks to Wall Street, your pensions you PAID INTO etc etc are all in jeopardy not because of states debts, but because your government: Federal and state have ransacked these investments/contributions to pay its debts to the world and to pay for the wars it is having around the world.

You are all falling dangerously for americas game again...and that is to make YOU feel like you are to blame for all of the ills now coming onto you and not your corrupt government and corrupt businesses..

A lesson WISDOM has taught me in life is never argue with IGNORANCE because it is a losing game as IGNORANCE knows no depth for which it will go to try and be right. This is also why I ignore your comments as well, but will address this comment from you only to remind you what this thread is about: Police Defying Orders In Wisconsin, and to please keep to the topic of the thread.

Hahahaha, talk about making excuses. Fact of the matter is that you were fucking bitch slapped something fierce in that thread and, instead of admitting that you were caught out on yet another blatant lie, you tucked tail and ran like the pussy gimmick you are.
